As I've said before, I don't care if our guards are 4 feet tall if they can play. I've had a bigger problems with the physical strength of our guards and their lateral speed in the past than I have had with their height. In the MAC, the Zips are going to see many large backcourts, so I don't see a 5-10 or 6 foot guard as a major issue. For me, the jury is still out on Groce. I need to see the team and some results first. That being said, I am most impressed by what he's been able to put together under adverse circumstances.

I would think the local governments down there are more likely to step up and help as the 13K a night at games coupled with hosting the opening round of the tourney benefits the local economy.
-
That will be the goal (until they lose regular season games).

I may be too skeptical, but I don't think most D1 basketball players are looking at the strength of their degree.

I really hate the trend that has developed in college basketball where the "lesser conferences" have become recruiting grounds for the P5 and larger conferences, with the established conference schools poaching the top talent from places like the MAC and Horizon League. I guess I can't expect better from some of the scum at the top.

As I understand it, Aaron is a great kid and a great teammate. He's a lighthearted personable kid everybody liked. As a Zip basketball player, he went sideways at best, never improving during his time there. I don't think it was for lack of effort. In any event, I don't think he was suddenly going to develop as a major MAC contributor as a senior and I'd rather have the open scholarship.

2017 G Torrey Patton
clarkwgriswold replied to Joe Akron's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Torrey Patton scored 21, had 4 assists and was named MVP of the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association North-South Division I-II Boys All-Star Game. -
I really like what Groce is doing. More than once, I heard our previous coach reference the Zips guards small stature and say they wouldn't have been able to get those kids if they were bigger. I'm not sure whether he was prematurely resigning himself to the fact he couldn't reach a little farther, or whether it was reality, but I'm happy to see Groce not coming to the same conclusion.

Tough road from undrafted free agent to an NFL roster. At best, he'll now go into camp as the 6th or 7th receiver on the Broncos. The kid is a talented athlete but he needed more time at WR before making that jump. Too bad he didn't have the proper guidance or didn't listen.
-
Nice yet. Sure seems like he'll be worth the wait. I'm really liking how Groce is putting this all together despite getting a late start.

Hard to miss something you never really had.

Assuming Antino is gone as many suggest, isn't it time to move on?

6'10 Deng Riak - ECU Transfer
clarkwgriswold replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
That does make a difference. I thought he was a sophomore, but I see now he's a red shirt freshmen. As I recall, those are better freshman numbers than Big Dog, but who knows what the situation was at ECU. -
6'10 Deng Riak - ECU Transfer
clarkwgriswold replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
3 points and 5 rebounds PPG on an below average team. Any idea why he left ECU? -
Any other qualifications to your original statement? The coaches and media vote on MAC Player of the Year. It wasn't even remotely close. I distinctly recall people pi$$ing and moaning about Zeke until he was gone and we had to watch Forsythe for a couple if years. Sure. Big Dog had defensive shortcomings, much like Zeke had offensive shortcomings, but to deride his contribution is ridiculous.

2017 G David Collins
clarkwgriswold replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I know this is where we've come at a society, but I really hate this whole process of the countdowns, press conferences, putting on the hats, etc....... -
Wait...there are guards over 6 feet tall? I can't imagine Collins passing up a chance to play with Dunn Martin and Hughes.
-
If it was based on offensive numbers, wouldn't Marcus Keene have been POY? I realize there's a whole lot of butt hurt in Zipland, but let's transfer that hurt into enthusiasm for the new regime, not revisionist history. Sure, it's painful that we're in a period of transition, but that doesn't need to result in the knee jerk reaction that everything under the prior regime was substandard.

2017 6'11 C Mark Kostelac IMG Academy
clarkwgriswold replied to tpsjugglerdude's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
I think the kid show promise and I wish only the best for him and the Zips, but please, please, please don't forget, what we are seeing are his HIGHLIGHT VIDEOS. -
From what I saw online, it looks like he grew quite a bit (6-8 to 6-11) from his sophomore to senior year. As a senior he looks a little "solid". It then looks like he lost weight at IMG.
-
He only averaged roughly 17 points and 8 rebounds a game. The coaches of the MAC voted him to the preseason All -MAC team and he was then named MAC player of the year. I guess he really was a 'BIG DOG." In the long line of Zips MAC players of the year, he was one of the 5 or 10 worse.

Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
clarkwgriswold replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Maybe it's just me, but since he's not the coach of the Zips, I don't give a rat's @$$ who Dambrot's recruiting. -
Kostelac looks decent. Tough to tell much from the size and speed of the competition in some of his video, but he seems fairly nimble for his size with some touch. Let's not forget, you can't teach 6-11.
