  1. After watching replays the target penalties were legit. BUT,the Back Judge, teh Linesman and the Umpire looked like they were drying some laundry they had just removed from the wash. Thtat said the interference calls on Daley were legit.
  2. No Woodson. I posted elsewhere that after seeing Nelson in two full games that I wondered why Bowden stayed with Woodson for so long during the season when the offense consistently had trouble scoring. Bowden saw Nelson everyday in practice. He had to see that the physical abilities of Nelson are significantly better than those of Woodson. Nelson is a different type of player. His presence opens up other aspects of the offense that weren't effective with Woodson at QB. Nelson is surprising.
  3. I'll be more than happy to be wrong on the wins.
  4. Folks don't over think what is happening right now. ENJOY IT. Been over a decade since these guys have been on the verge of a trip to Detroit. And, just like in 2005,they HAVE TO BEAT KS'WHO to go! No blizzard this time. A lot about last night's game you could parse out . The one thing I kept wondering while I was watching Nelson trying to stay warm was why Bowden stayed with Woodson for so long during the season? Especially, when the offense struggled to score. He and the coaches were seeing Nelson in practice every day. After we saw him for two full games,it appears pretty apparent that he has more overall physical talent than Woodson. More athletic, better arm extends plays with the run,is not afraid to run, seems more accurate and is not afraid to throw the ball away when the play is busted. With Nelson on the field it opened up the rest of the offense so they were able to run a little more effectively. Anyway, now Tuesday 11-21-17 becomes the biggest game of the season!
  5. I do think objectively I have to believe OU will win. That team has certainly been playing well for at least a month. The big win over Toledo may have been a little flukey but that day OU was better. Don't think OU should have to pass much barring some unforeseen circumstance. And,they can divvy up the yards on the ground amongst 3 or 4 different people. One guy doesn't have to get 200 or 150 for them to be effective. Zips defense hasn't been effective against the run when opponents want to run. Don't see that changing. Zips will have to hit some big plays on offense early so the defense isn't under constant pressure. Might mean Zips, no matter who QB's will have more passing yards than OU out of necessity. Obviously, the offense can't turn the ball over and have a string of '3 and outs' without scoring or at least staying on the field a while to give the D a blow. If Zips used a tight end as a receiver more often it might be effective. Even lining up with two backs in the backfield and throwing to them as a substitute for the run game might help. Those are things Bowden doesn't normally do however. Last train leaving for Detroit about 11PM on Tuesday 11-14-17. Be on it.
  6. That probably isn't something that University presidents want to get behind at this moment given the highly publicized incidences of college students dying from over indulgence of alcohol and probably other intoxicating substances on college campuses. And,those other 'promotions' being referred to here were in connection with professional sports teams not public institutions of 'higher' learning. Got to imagine that there might be a pretty large liability incurred if something like this went bad at an on campus site. And,that does not 'solve' the long term issue anyway.
  7. This is a tough situation. What factors is Bowden looking at? Is is 'simply' trying to beat OU and winning the division and going to the MAC Championship game(tough no matter who plays)? Is it keeping team discipline? Is there a consideration about his job at Akron might be in jeopardy depending on how the team finishes? Hard to tell what his overriding concern is. Whatever,Zips have to play the best game they have played all season. Hopefully, we haven't seen that yet.
  8. Good for him. Was a spark with the Zips last season.
  9. Was it 38-10 at the half?
  10. Obviously a lot of these folks were not around or have forgotten 2003-2005. Those were far better teams than this one. And, yes if there had been as many meaningless bowls then as there are now Akron would have been to at least 1 if not 2 more. Frankly, the 2008 team that lost to UB in multiple OT's at the last game at the Bowl was better than this one. UB had a RB that went to the Packers in the draft... Unfortunately,Akron was playing with a QB who had an incurable substance abuse addiction which affected him and the rest of the team. Lets hope the Zips rise above their ineptness and finally do something unexpected!
  11. Let NO ONE personally attack ANYONE on this site. Its happened all too often in the past!
  12. Looked at the stats from the OU/Toledo game. OU had 532 total yards; 393 rushing yards with two Brown(142) and Rourke, the QB(115). Ouellette' supposedly their best back 'only' had 70. A potent running game with a running QB who only has to throw sparingly is not a recipe for a ZIPS win. But,this is as close as as these guys have been to actually realistically being able to win the division. Sometimes teams can play out of their minds for one game like this. Lets play it and see.
  13. I hope what looks inevitable doesn't happen. But..... I still go back to the stretch of seasons 2003-2005. Those teams were 7-5(Owens), 6-5(Brookhart), 7-6(Brookhart,MAC Champs and Motor City Bowl). Akron got screwed out of other bowls because there weren't as many available. Surely at least one of those teams with Frye should have gotten a bid.
  14. I didn't watch the entire game. But,the last time I looked in OU was up I think, 38-10 on the team many believed to be the best in the MAC. Surprising as hell.
  15. Like I said I hoped I had been wrong! Thanks anyway.
  16. Nelson can't be judged on what happened last night. That would be blaming him for the lack of discipline the coaching staff has allowed to occur over the last 5 years. Nelson might be OK if there was anyone on the Akron staff who could 'coach up' QB's. But,there is not. Bowden has not shown any ability to bring in top quality MAC Qb's or improve the ones he has has brought in to any great extent. I actually think that Nelson has some real potential with a staff that that is skilled at play calling and improving offensive players. We don't have that now! I am watching the OU- Toledo game. Next week is going to be ugly in MHO!
  17. Unfortunately close but no cigar.
  18. When you just look at the numbers and didn't know who was suspended and who got hurt you would expect the outcome you got. Akron: Total yards-273 Miami: 420 Rush: 55 on 30 atts(1.8) 176 on 34(Young-14-100) Pass:218 on 19/38/0 244 on 19/32/2 Plays: 68 66 Pen: 5-57 4-40 Again,no significant running game. The caveat is the Sands injury ,obviously. And, a sputtering offense, again, the Woodson suspension. Again,a defense that can't stop the run consistently. Some more 'scratch your head' play calling at times. Look,Miami is not very good, period. They played with a hobbled QB but, one who actually wanted to play. Their defense did just enough to win the game. Its a shame, again that what happened with the suspension and the injuries happened when they did. This wasn't the fault of Nelson who apparently had little if any prep time. And, its not just the fault of the Sands injury. This team still has a lot of holes on both sides of the ball which get more exposed when these things happen. Unfortunately, the Zips play a far,far better OU team next week than they faced on last night. Its still possible but next week will have to be the BEST game that these guys have played and the coaches have coached this season. Damn!
  19. Can't say I have been a big Woodson fan the last two seasons. Thought maybe it was because he was 'hurt'. Give the guy a break. But,the more we saw of his antics on the field and the way the team never really rallied around him it made you wonder. Boy,on the verge and this happens. Hope its not ANOTHER wait until whatever season, again!
  20. I wanna see how OU plays Toledo. In MHO OU is still the 'best' team in the East until Akron beats them. It will take an extraordinary effort by the DEFENSE this week and against OU to win the division. As I did with the Miami stats(take a look) I will glean out the OU stats later. The 'stats' point to a Miami win tonite. HOPE I AM WRONG!
  21. At this point 'bowl eligible' is frankly meaningless. Sorry, if they don't beat OU, finally, next week the season is a disappointment in MHO. Sorry, but when Bowden has it right in front of him I hope he gets it done. Can't let this slip away.!
  22. Southern Comfort worked well also.
  23. Teams passed with the O-line in the 3-point for decades. The 2-point became more popular with the advent of spread offenses. You don't have to run every time out of the 3. BUT,and this is a big 'but' so to speak, this is where your OC and HC have to be more creative than we have seen most of the time from Milwee and Bowden. Give the O-Line a chance. Personally I would like to see more real play action with Woodson under center. But,thats not gonna happen at this point with these two calling plays. At least give the O-Line some advantage when you want to run. They need to concentrate on the run more especially to give the D a blow.
