Week #6 - BGSU Falcons @ Akron Zips - 3:30 pm Kick-off
Lee Adams replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
I have season tix but at this point in the journey decided to 'donate' my money to the athletic dept. Did my 20 mile bike ride instead. I want to look at the stats. But,from the comments posted here this is a game a sound, well coached team would have won. -
Moorhead 2024 make or break season to keep job?
Lee Adams replied to akrzips2012's topic in Akron Zips Football
I apologize if I said this previously. But, does anyone know why Moorehead didn't go to Miami with Cristobal? Just wonderin'. -
How many more years will it take Moorehead to find 'his' QB for 'his' system?
-
Finley is not the problem.
-
Indecision Stadium and the field house are meaningless now. That train left the station years ago. Recruits are only going to come here if they are not good enough to play elsewhere or want to try to play a year and move on. When they see a program that is chronically poorly performing on the field and on the sideline they can go anywhere and have a better opportunity. Not gonna get themselves beat up to win 1 or 2 games. Still curious as to why Cristobal didn't want Mooerhead to go to Miami of Florida with him.

At this point in this season it is a bit, lets say, less than useful to be trying to evaluate individual players after each loss by 20 points or more to D1 opponents. When the RB's only get a total of 8 carries for 15 yards, when your offense can only produce a -18 yards on he ground, only +15 from the RBs(Finley's total 'ground' yardage was -31. I know that includes sacks), when your offense only produces 196 yds. through the air and you only have positive offensive yardage of 211 yards you have a systemic problem not just an individual one. When your defense gives up 236 yds. on the ground with 2 opponent's RBs going over 100 yds. each, when the opposing QB passes for over 200 yds. on top of that, you don't just have an individual problem you have a systemic problem. They had a chance to jump start their season with a win yesterday. OU is certainly not the top tier of the MAC this year but they won by 20 points. What the coaches are trying to get the players to execute on offense and defense isn't working. Will that change now? After this amount of time doubtful. What do they do this year and in the future? Very disappointing again.

I'm looking at the stats. Akron RB's run the ball a total of 4 times each! Finley has to throw the ball 38 times completes 25. Has 2 picks. Never expected this kind of crap when they hired Moorehead. This is not about 'nit picky' things. Moorehead has made no progress with the program. They needed to win today. Lose by 20!!!! Unlesss there are 4 more wins in this sched. Some really hard decisions HAVE to be made about the future of football at Akron. Not just talking about coaching changes. Talking about where this program wants to compete.

As you know, when QB's continually get hit and chased, most of them develop bad habits. Your ribs are hurting, your shoulders are sore etc.,etc. After 3 beatings, he is now anticipating those hits. Throws start going off the back foot. They get out too early. Too many throws on the run. That leads to missing targets even when there is a 'surprisingly' clean pocket. And with this O line and lack of a consistent run game a clean pocket is as you say, surprising. Here is hoping it all comes together in Athens.

More competitive though.

Agree to disagree. We will see what happens in Athens.

Week 4 - Zips vs. Gamecocks @ 7:30 pm EST

Yep. I wasn't jumping off the Moorehead band wagon until now. But, to allow a kid to take the beatings Finley has been taking the last few weeks is inexcusable in my estimation. Where does the offense go without Finley. Moorehead won't run the ball. Your back-up QB...? Wanna go the rest of the way with him? -
Don't blame Finley. Moorehead allowed him to get beat up!! I said last week Moorehead should have considered not playing him or at least removed him from the game before he got beat up anymore. Agree, this team is beaten physically and mentally. I still refer to Gary Danielson's comment during the OSU game. The most important game on the schedule would be Ohio U. Now I am afraid there isn't enough gas in the tank to beat, not just compete against OU. Point the finger at Moorehead for getting Finley beat up. Without Finley Moorehead hasn't got the QB to run his offense. And, the way this defense is playing, its not gonna win them a game. If they surprise and win at Athens they can save the season. BUT...

None coming any time soon.

People in the Akron area showed more interest in Akron football when the program was a very good D2 program. Consistent winning,playoffs,Acme-Zip. Don't get me wrong not like they drew 20,000. But, attendance was good for that level. It seemed the ABJ payed more attention. They were competitive. Lost to Terry Bradshaw in the playoffs. Won 2 home playoff games at the Bowl. One was the first NCAA overtime playoff game as I recall. It was just more fun.

Only one goal against South Carolina. Keep Finley healthy! -
Have a little different take on that game. Haven't seen a QB make throws like Finley maybe since the Frye/Getsy era. The 56 yarder he threw to Golden, (I believe) was beautiful. He was getting beat up again because the O line still isn't much good at pass protection. Finley sometimes scrambles a little too quickly. But sometimes its self preservation. Moorehead's' lets kindly say strange play calling(I have a different word in mind) is contributing to Finley getting beat up. Moorehead better realize that if Finley goes down for any length of time his offense is toast. He has two quality RB's but won't use them consistently. Even Joe Dunn was wondering out loud why Akron wasn't running the ball more especially in the 2nd half. Wide receivers looked good for the most part. They have a QB who can get the ball to them. Defense was adequate against lesser competition. Still getting gouged on the ground too much. Colgate O line 'looked' bigger than Akron's defense. Db's looked good. Again, against lesser competition. Finally have a punter and kicker who can contribute. The lack of discipline on the field reared its ugly head again. Dumb, preventable penalties. I guess Moorehead isn't going to deal with it. New scoreboard was nice. Free T shirts nice. Granddaughter had a great time. I fear for Finley's health against S.Carolina. He is already hurting. If I'm the head coach as soon as it starts to get out of hand I sit Finley and some other starters and point to OU in Athens.

Watched a good bit of Toledo demolishing Miss. State. Akron and a number of other MAC programs can only dream of achieving at that level. Didn't realize Jason Candle had been there 10 years according to the announcers. Vince Kheres on the staff. Don't see that kind of success ever happening at Akron. The commitment to building a Toledo type operation has never existed here since Akron went to full D1. Sad.

What I have seen from 2 blowout games is very similar to last season. ONE exception I think. Finley seems to be an upgrade at QB. Even though he is playing behind a poor O line and a still suspect running game. I hope he doesn't get injured any more than he is. The defense is still getting gouged by teams that run right at them. NIU has them circled again. If Colgate has any kind of O line they are at least gonna try it. If Akron doesn't win by double digits this thing is worse than I thought. Forget South Carolina. Ohio is the real marker for this team. Lets cool it with the 'fire the coach' talk. Moorehead should get the rest of this season no matter what. Just like last season if there is no improvement in October/November then make your decision.
-
I guess any of us who for some reason picked Akron to beat NIU can cross off that one. NIU, thats a good football program. Has been.
-
I'm liking Finley. Makes decent decisions, so far. Throws a nice ball. If they can develop the O-line and a run game the offense can put up at least enough points to give the defense a chance. The D is getting gouged on the ground. Lets see how they finish. Avoid a blowout. Keep Finley healthy. No serious injuries. CUT THE STUPID PENALTIES!

Inhave a friend who kinda follows OSU. He said Akron Defense was better than expected. The Offense not so much. I only hope that the D doesn't get sobeat up that they are gassed for Colgate and OU. The O-line is still terrible. Moorehead better hope that Bullock is ready because against Rutgers and South Carolina Finley is gonna get beat up. If they can get at least 21 points out of the offense the defense can win a couple of games. Wanna see the Colgate and OU games. Gary Danielson said the OU game is the key game of the season for Akron.
