I hear that. Their leading scorer tonight was a Freshman. Their leading scorer on the season is another Freshman. Meanwhile, I see post after post on this forum expressing hope that some of our young guys might "develop", and be productive a few years from now. Big difference.
-
I guess on the bright side, at least we weren't in DeKalb?
-
I hear that. I saw them loading up the bus early this afternoon. That would have seemed to logistically make sense. However, we always have to remember that these kids are college students, and having them back in class again today, and saving the hotel costs, was probably deemed to be more beneficial and less costly.

Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
skip-zip replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I think most people here can probably tell the difference between someone fairly and accurately acknowledging the quick resurgence of Duquesne basketball, vs. those who react to what's happening there as if they somehow feel like they still have an ax to grind with Keith. Knocking off the new Duquesne had tremendous meaning to them. Watch the reaction of the players, staff, and fans in the video at the end of the game. I wonder how they reacted when they beat 3-15 Duquesne last year? -
Yes guys, those are some other good ones. feetg10....I don't remember Travis fouling out, but Joyce fouled out. Dials had to play the point for the entire overtime, and delivered that pass to Wood on a drive and dish. And remember this: A week later we played that same Kent team in the MAC Semifinal, and went on a 2nd half scoring barrage to win and reach the finals, after trailing by 14 at the half.

And if he doesn't hit that shot, we get eliminated in the Quarterfinals, and don't make it to the title game in 2010. The following year, we had ANOTHER double OT game in the Quarterfinals to get past Miami, or we don't win the title that year. Which included a heart-stopping two blocked shots at the end of Overtime by Zeke and McNees to save that game at the end. Man, we've sure seen some crazy basketball games around here.

No. Not until the 86-87 season. A few years after Joe was gone.
-
Ha Ha. You must have been reading my mind.

Jakubick led the nation in scoring his Sr. year at Akron at somewhere around 30 ppg. I'd figure he might have had a game that high at some point that year. Maybe. That would be the only one. Kudos for remembering all of the details of Xavier game. When Jimmal was back here a few years ago, I got to sit with him and talk about that Xavier game one day. Pretty cool. And he's such a super person too.
-
Until he has a few more of his single-digit games where he can't make a hoop, which will leave you scratching your head. We need these super-human efforts to win some games down the stretch. But, I think you will find that different people will surprise you on different nights.

Wow. Duquesne losses at the buzzer on the road against #24 Rhode Island. https://www.sbnation.com/college-basketball/2018/1/27/16940418/rhode-island-vs-duquesne-buzzer-beater-atlantic-10 -
Reminded me of Ball vs. Xavier. The game was pretty similar to that game too, which I think was also 2 OT.

I'm with you, Kreed. I want to give LZip some props for giving a good analysis of how things naturally change when a program starts to become consistently successful. I think maybe he's mellowed a bit from his "I am going to bash Dambrot at every opportunity" post from earlier in this thread. I think one thing is forgotten as the Dambrot banter continues. No matter where we all stand on our satisfaction level, ALL of us share in the disappointment of the MAC title game losses, and ALL of us share in the disappointment that we didn't win an NCAA tournament game during his tenure. Those disappointments are not only felt by those who choose to minimize all of Keith's accomplishments. Those trips back from Cleveland on those Saturday nights were painful. LZip....As a factual correction, I think you should have just checked your "inevitable first round NIT losses" comment. On 3 different occasions, we won first round games and advanced to the 2nd round of the NIT. For those of us who had to endure Akron Basketball between 1989 (Huggins departure) and 2004 (Keith's arrival), those triumphs certainly are not forgotten. -

I'm far less than sold, but I get what you're saying. Maybe after this year passes, and we aren't in a situation again where we had to grab whoever we could get and offer them a scholarship, our future prospects for the interior positions will improve. With this team especially, I think I see far more people elevate or deflate their hopes dramatically from one game to the next, based on good/bad performances than they ever have with any recent Zips teams. Some of them are really extreme, and change by the day. In looking at the future schedule, we need to remember that we still have to play ALL FIVE of our Division foes on the road over the last 11 games. I think that collective group of games will tell us a lot more about whether any of these guys can contribute for us in the future, rather than relying on a single play or a single game to make that assessment.
-
Huh? These two teams are tied for Last Place. And one team is going to be in sole possession of that spot after tonight. Lets hope it's not us in the cellar.
-
Gosh. It would be nice if college educated people representing our student body looked at these things a 2nd time for SPELLING before they send these out to the internet. Is that too much to ask?
-
Very rare. And to dispute what he said, I think he did a lot more than just realize his dream to "play" FBS football. He could have even been an NFL prospect with another good year. Good for him.

Despite your condescension, if he can get them to the NCAA Tournament this year, that would indeed be a Miraculous turnaround. That won't happen. They will still struggle this year, until much-needed reinforcements get there next season. But nobody could have predicted what we've seen so far. No need to comment on all of the other material in your post, which appears to be rehashing things about his Akron accomplishments that have been debated over, and over and over again on this forum. -

Since you brought it up....http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_conf_Men.html But whether the MAC or A-10 ends up being better this year is not why people are posting here. We're posting because when you compare Duquesne against themselves, it's an eye-popping difference between last year and this year. Even the biggest Dambrot supporters certainly couldn't have predicted that they'd improve this much, and this fast. -

This comment should even further illustrate just how bad Duquesne was before his arrival. The Dukes finished 3-15 last year in this same conference, against these same "cupcake" teams. -
I don't think anyone was making any excuses. It's just the situation right now. You have your best perimeter shooter being forced to play post, rebound, and defend on the interior. They're using him in ways where it's possibly best for the team out of necessity, but probably not best for his personal scoring numbers. That's why I've said all along that another perimeter scorer needs to emerge. Guys like Reggie never had to fill the roles that Utomi is having to fill right now on this team. And we had that luxury back then.
-
I mentioned this a few weeks ago. He's simply carrying too much burden for this team. Last night was a good example. Utomi and Ivey had a lot of the rebounds. That's really unusual. In Utomi's case, it's hard to have your primary shooter/scorer doing so many other things on the floor, and expecting them to still be able to shoot/score well.

Yes, if he actually has a concussion, lights and noise might bother him. That might be what you're trying to say here. But, watching a girl's basketball game is unrelated to whether he's under protocol. The protocol is a list of steps that an athlete needs to accomplish in order to be cleared to play.
