Akron1 Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 Heard Alex is going to play basketball at Western Georgia this year. It is a Division II school. Could not find anything online to confirm. Quote
LZIp Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 I thought he moved back to Puerto Rico. Must have had a change of heart. Good luck to him if true. Quote
zippyfan34 Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 Confirmed via Josh Egner's tweet to Abreu. https://twitter.com/abreu1123 Quote
GP1 Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 Is he going to hit the mark this year for the oldest guy playing college basketball? Quote
Dr Z Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 Glad he is getting a second chance somewhere, hopefully he takes advantage. Good luck to him. Quote
MDZip Posted September 3, 2014 Report Posted September 3, 2014 When I saw the post I thought it was U-Wisconsin - Green Bay, but this is much different than that. Good he gets another chance and probably learned some big life lessons the hard way. Good luck to Alex and thanks for some great memories. Quote
UAZip0510 Posted September 4, 2014 Report Posted September 4, 2014 Confirmed via Josh Egner's tweet to Abreu. https://twitter.com/abreu1123So ironic that Egner is the one congratulating him. Quote
Dave in Green Posted September 4, 2014 Report Posted September 4, 2014 Egner had so much basketball promise, and he just slid off into nothingness on the court to the point that he couldn't cut it in D-II. But apparently he's having lots of fun in other areas of life, so it seems that basketball wasn't a high priority for him despite his obvious abilities. I wish him the best and am left to wonder what could have been. Quote
Zipmeister Posted September 8, 2014 Report Posted September 8, 2014 Maybe Western Carolina doesn't want to publicize the latest addition to their basketball squad, or maybe they don't know about it.As of 9/8 no mention of AA on the Wolf's athletic web site. Quote
Z.I.P. Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Come on ZipsNation! I can't believe you left it to a guy in the Hah Waiian Islands to provide the Trivia Touche' of the Day!:Alex Abreu will be trying to follow in the footsteps of one of the greatest Cleveland Cavaliers of all time -- the legendary Clarence "Footsy" Walker, the pride of West Georgia State. http://www.cavsnews.com/20080316-1044.php Quote
Hilltopper Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Alex's new roommate is @dortchthetorchhttp://instagram.com/p/soUtyIoNBE/UWG Signs Third Men's Basketball RecruitCooney has announced that guard Marcus Dortch will transfer to West Georgia from NAIA Southern Polytechnic State in Marietta. Dortch, a 6-3, 190-pound guard, is a native of Powder Springs and graduate of Hillgrove High School. He will be a junior when he joins the Wolves' program this fall. Quote
Dave in Green Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 Dortch The Torch earned his nickname. He shot 61.5% from the field (60% on 3s), which is pretty spectacular for a guard, and averaged 20 points per game last season. Of course, the average for the season only lists one game played. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 I wonder if having a torch in the same room with AA is a good thing. If Daquann Papers is added to the dorm room, we could have a new Cheech and Chong movie? 1 Quote
Buckzip Posted September 9, 2014 Report Posted September 9, 2014 West Georgia. I live 20 minutes away. Nice school Quote

I wish him the best and am left to wonder what could have been.If you recall, when he came here, the word I was getting on him from some who played and coached against him was...great athletic ability, but probably not enough basketball ability to play at our level. I think that's what we ended up seeing. But WOW, at certain times he was so much fun to watch. I loved his ability to elevate off the floor. Quote
Dave in Green Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 Skip, I remember. In retrospect I think it may have been more about priorities. Egner was a high school hero who helped bring a state championship to his school, and it appeared almost effortless. The leap to the D-I college level doesn't come without lots of focus and effort, as we've seen with a number of Zips players over the years. But even those who didn't make it with the Zips have gone on to do well in D-II. Surely Egner had enough ability to succeed at Walsh with even a modest level of focus and effort. I think other things became more important to him than basketball. I'll always remember him from watching his spectacular performance in the JAR during the HS playoffs and thinking what a great Zips player he could become. I wish him well in whatever productive things he chooses to do with his life. Quote
Dr Z Posted September 10, 2014 Report Posted September 10, 2014 I was never an Egner fan, I saw to much "I" in his game. Quote
