We were more short-handed than it seemed.  For as frustrating as Pat is on the offensive end, his presence is really needed on defense.  SUNY Canada started getting a little cold and tired, but before that it seemed the Zips were still shaking off the loss at DeKalb.  Central took care of Toledo for us.  Cant blew a lead and WMU took them to OT.  Let's get that outright regular season title and the #1 seed.

Nice 10-0 run to close out the half.

Wow!  They were down THIRTEEN??!!  (I was working this p.m., so too busy to follow closely).  But -- was anyone REALLY afraid we were going to get blown out at that point (down 36-23)?  That's because we know how resilient this team is -- and what 3-pointability it has!

I have noticed that when a game is not broadcast on ESPN3, the Sports Network of Record also does not have an on-line gametracker going (like tonight).  So, while we (those who tried to follow) got that maddeningly poor video stream, we were treated to NO statistics to boot!

Good teams win when they don't always have their best stuff, This was an important one tonight, the kind of game that furthers the development of mental toughness.

I thought Buffalo played great defense in the first half.  The first team to shut down Big Dog in the post.  They had 3 guys in the lane so that he could not score.  When he passed to the open man we were not hitting our 3 point shots.  They are quick and athletic and drove to the hoop past our guards and forward.  I still cannot figure out why Noah defends so close to a player when they are 50 feet from the basket.  He just does not have the lateral movement to keep his man in front of him.  The second half Antino did a great job defending.  We also had several stupid turnovers where Buffalo was just beating us to the ball.  Our 3 point shooting once again did the trick in the second half.

About This Game:

1) When we were down 13, I really thought we were in trouble.  Didn't think we would lose, but really thought it was going to take a long, lone time to catch up.

2) Very frustrating to see Buffalo, WITHOUT BEARDEN, driving nearly effortlessly to the hoop.  Then, when Kwan gets in foul trouble, they take our best defender off the floor, and made everyone else afraid to foul inside.

3) Buffalo knocking people around like pin balls to get to rebounds is just ridiculous.  If a rebounder has an established position on the floor awaiting a rebound, you cannot jump on his back (the most obvious call), but you ALSO cannot crash into that person from the side, or the front.  That's a foul at every level of basketball.

4) I'm really beginning to think that the officials we are getting for our home games are afraid to call a travel.

5) If we play these guys again, there are a number of guys (especially Cheatham) who have to be much more wary of the quickness of Buffalo's guards to cut in front of passing lanes.

While that is true, tonight I discovered that gozips.com has a very good game cast/tracker. Next game, go the website, mens basketball schedule, and there's a link to live stats. It was ahead of the radio feed I had on and pretty detailed.

I've seen bigger crowds at Infocision... Not much bigger, but bigger

Sloppy game, but one that they could of let slip away but they didn't

Fun game to watch tonight. i though Buffalo played their asses off. Good size, and for long stretches they out-worked the Zips. Great perimeter defense. I like their coach...he'll be dangerous with some depth and talent. Hell...they're dangerous enough right now.

The Zips woke up with 5 minutes to go in the first half, and after that I never really thought the game was in doubt. Multiple great performances. Welcome back Ace.

The team's offensive chemistry has really solidified over the past month. Double team Big Dog and we find the open man on the perimeter...don't double team him, and he takes it to the rack. And he drains his free throws. When do the Big Dog "MVP" chants begin?

Defense has some work to do, but is definitely improving. Fun Tuesday night. Thanks, Zips!

Some observations from the game:

1. Kwan has finally accepted his role-rebounding and D,however he has a tendency to push off going for rebounds-can't commit 2 fouls in the first 2 minutes when your team is shorthanded inside.

2. This is the 3rd straight game that Reggie has scored 0 pts in the first half and then in double figures in the 2nd half-we need to figure out how to get him shots earlier in the game-more passing and less dribbling.

3. Big Dog is definitely our top player-he keeps getting better and comes up with new moves inside including driving from the key to the hoop.

4. Jake appeared to reinjure his back late in the game-he hobbled off-any word on his status?

5. This team lives and dies by the 3 ball-when we are hitting we can beat most anybody, but when our shots are not falling, we don't seem to have much other offense to fall back on.

6. We have a much better and deeper team than Cant,BUT we have to rebound and box out as they are strong on the boards.

Wondering what the magic numbers are now. We do NOT have to win all our games to win the MAC. However, there must be several permutations where we can lose 2 or three games and still win the MAC,

Anyone done the numbers yet?

Expand

This one's pretty easy right now.

Win 4 out of the last 5 and we're overall MAC Champs.

Win 3 out of the last 5 and either OU, Ken+ or Ball State have to win ALL of their remaining games to force a tie.

We WIN the tiebreaker against Ball State by being 1-0 against them this year, and no games remaining between us.

The only way OU can catch us is to beat us at home (to go 1-1 against us this year), win all of their other games, and hope we lose one other remaining game to force a secondary tiebreaker.

The tiebreaker against Ken+ is still up in the air since we still play them twice.  But, Ken+ would still have to beat us twice, and win all of their other remaining games.

Moral of the Story.....It's going to be very difficult for us to lose the Overall MAC Regular Season Title right now.

I hope you aren't basing this solely on what you saw last night, since he was basically playing Pat's position for most of his time on the floor.

But, I would agree with you if you are basing it on what we've been seeing in several recent games.

We've been saying that for 26 games now - I think everyone is more than okay with it by now. They're usually falling.

Great game last night.  MAC basketball has been extremely entertaining & competitive this year!  Can't wait for Friday night!  (Hope Pat's ready to go.)

From ubfan.com:

Akron always loves to call us "Canada" as though it's an insult. How about we call them "Afghanistan" since they are the only MAC school that broadcasts its games from a freaking camcorder. Try spending $50 to create something ESPN3 will pick up.

Evidently, "Polytechnic" does not include a minor in A/V

This is a little concerning:

"The Bulls never recovered despite a dominant 50-29 rebounding edge, including 15-11 on the offensive glass, and a lopsided 42-18 scoring advantage in the paint."

Maybe that Canadian is onto something.  Jughead on bobcatattack has used "Rooting for Akron is like cheering on the Taliban" for his signature for some time now.  Call us what you like.  We won't cry about it.

I've hammered on Pat a little bit this year, and think he has really underperformed.

But, he would have made a big difference in this game.  His presence in the paint defensively, the handful of rebounds he would have pulled down, and the 5-10 points he would have scored.
