2016 Week 9 Preview: Akron Zips vs. Buffalo Bulls

Quote

The defense allows 289 rushing yards per game. Only Louisiana-Monroe allows more. Last week, Northern Illinois earned 312 yards on the ground, along with four rushing touchdowns to squash the Buffalo defense. Despite the Bulls’ major issues on defense, the one-win team only yields 33.4 points per game.

But they are still getting blown out, due to a lack of offense.

Faster starts, more touches for Jordan Johnson on UB agenda

More carries for running back Jordan Johnson will be a priority for the University at Buffalo offense over the final five games of the season.

It has been easier said than done the first seven games.

Johnson showed his ability in Saturday’s loss at Northern Illinois by gaining 97 yards on 13 carries. He had a 29-yard TD run. But Johnson is averaging only 14 carries a game, and UB stands second last in the Mid-American Conference in rushing attempts, at 34 a game.

A big part of the problem is UB falls behind so fast. The Bulls have been outscored in the first quarter, 55-7. The average halftime deficit has been 18-6.

I'd dress Ball, but not start him assuming he is capable of playing. That way he is there if you need him, but if the game is well in hand you give him another week to recover.

For the most part, it would be hard to say that the Edwards/Morgan tandem has been anything other than surprisingly effective carrying the load for the running game.    I'm thinking this is the way to go also.

But strange things seem to happen in Buffalo.  Even coach acknowledged that.

The offense will take what the defense gives us. If they give us 1:1 coverage with Jerome Lane all night, I expect us to pass all night. If they throw extra coverage on our receivers, I expect us to run. I am not sure it really matters, as bad as the Buffalo defense is, though.

By the way,my bad. Zips ran the ball 30 times, attempted 41 passes.

I'm eager to see if the ESPN3 crew and graphics reference Zips LB "Ulysses Grant" again on Thursday. I wish I had a picture of the TV screen when that popped up during the Ball State game.

That's worth digging through the replay to find. That had to be about the worst coverage I have seen in a while.

I'm sure someone who's very crafty could pull that image from the game replay.

I'm also picturing how funny it would have been if the real Ulysses Grant was also pictured next to the info. about Gilbert.  And again, I'm sure one of you younger folks could probably put together that graphic as well, for our amusement.

It was bad!! They kept miss pronouncing the player names. They confused offensive and defensive players with the same number. It was also obvious that they hadn't even watched any of our games or did any research. Usually the producer and the analyst will pull stats and facts for the game and these guy seemed like all they did was look at some box scores the night before. They offered no kind of insight.

My wife and I lost it when they showed Ulysses Grant. It was even funnier when they proceeded to call him that when he made the tackle on the next play.

You should ban yourself for that picture.

One would think posting that picture would be far worse than spelling out the F word on this board.

Unfortunately for Buffalo, top cornerback senior Boise Ross may be out for the game after an injury against Northern Illinois. He was moving around in practice Monday but did not participate. If he is unavailable for the Bulls, sophomore cornerback Brandon Williams will have to step in as his replacement.

I am sure we will be testing this situation out, early. Honestly, you have to almost feel bad for a bad team that seems to be taking hits that could potentially make them even worse.

Zips look to continue conference success in Buffalo

I have really enjoyed The Buchtelite coverage this season. I wouldn't mind seeing one of these kids in-seating our current local coverage upon graduation.

One minute into the broadcast they said our QB's name was Thomas Woodside. On the opening series they had both teams with 0-6 records for the season on the game status box.

I'm watching the broadcast replay of the game.

In that first minute, yes, Woodson was "Woodside", but also Natson was "Watson".

Go to about the 8:50 mark to hear and see the "Ulysses Grant" reference.
