The only surprise in this is how long it has taken. Pro & College sports have become such a big business. These organizations/schools would be dumb not to take the money and put logos on their jerseys.

As far as college goes, it's Big Business for some schools.  For the rest (like us) it's survival.   The need for outside money has been increasing dramatically for years. That's why we already have "naming rights" contracts on so many things, and why we have several people dedicated just to pursuing yearly corporate sponsors.

You're right.  It's a surprise it has taken this long.  And the ways to generate revenue will have to continue to get more and more creative.

People like to make fun of soccer for plastering sponsorships everywhere, but I'd agree to replacing the Zips midfield logo with the Goodyear logo if it meant eliminating media timeouts. A 48 minute game shouldn't take 3 1/2 hours to watch.

Why on earth would they do that?  They'd continue to have the Commercial breaks for the $$$$.

And there it is, the problem in our society.  The guys on the top squeeze every last drop they can out of something, letting everyone else fight over the what little trickles down to them.  Those big universities squeeze so they can make even more.  The small, desperately copy to get whatever they can out of it just to stay afloat.  It's what leads to the scenarios of the G5 never getting a seat at the table for a National Championship.  Ever.  While those biggest of the big boys like OSU get gerrymandered in whenever possible.

The day a company logo appears on a Zips or Browns or Cavs jersey is the day I stop watching.

Uh, oh, Balsy. The Cavs called your bluff :(

Goodyear reaches agreement with Cavs to place patch on jerseys

(Wonder if the contract stipulates "We get out of the contract when LeBron retires,"? )

The Cavs are believed to be the fifth NBA team to reach agreement on a sponsorship patch, joining the Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings, Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets. The NBA is beginning a three-year trial program next season that includes sponsorship patches on jerseys, an initiative Adam Silver has supported since taking over as the NBA’s commissioner. (BOLD mine.)

I hadn't considered this...

The deal is a victory for Goodyear, particularly with Akron native LeBron James back in Cleveland. The defending champions are on national television nearly 30 times a season. James and Kyrie Irving consistently rank as two of the league’s top jerseys in sales annually.

...the patch will, naturally, be included on all replica jersey sales.

It was going to happen. Just glad we got a local company.

How many players are sponsored by Continental Tire or Michelin?

DeAndre Liggins is working out a deal with Firestone as we speak.

For example, LeBron has endorsement deals with Coca-Cola, Nike, Upper Deck, Samsung, Audemars Piguet and Dunkin Donuts. Nike, McDonald’s, Beats, Tencent and Kia, among others.

Looks like a tribute to the old Akron Wingfoots?

Turns out that was a Photoshop (a very good one) from reddit. I think it looks great and I can see Goodyear playing up the old Wingfoot connection. That logo or the diamond emblem logo would look pretty good and not overbearing.

We could bring back Larry Brown to christen the jerseys as a famous former Wingfoot.

S***.   :puke:

I was thinking about buying a Cavs jersey, definitely not going to now.  And I'm not kidding, this turns me off to watching them even though they won a championship.

Side Note:  I wonder if the Jersey companies have to agree to the partnership.  Because then you'd have like a Goodyear patch on a Nike jersey?
