Torrey Patton - Transferring

The Horizon League tournament is rather nuts.  Wright State lost and the #1 seed Vikings went to 3 OTs.  Torrey scored 30 points.  Horizon league gave every team a chance with the final 4 bubbling in Indianapolis and the winner likely staying there.

Detroit Mercy lost on a buzzer beater and YSU also went to OT!!

Wright State was up 72-48 with 6 and half minutes left and Milwaukee hit a three with one second left and then won it in overtime. Holy crap. Play til the whistle.

Huh, the Horizon League re-seeds after every round. That's one way of protecting your top seed. BTW, Keith and the Dukes won their first round match-up in the A-10.

The rules and format of that tournament are completely subjective.  They based the seeds on subjective criteria like strength of schedule.

Congrats to Torrey Patton (23 points 10 rebounds) and the Vikings for winning the Horizon League tournament. The Vikings have never lost an opening game in the NCAA tournament. I remember them upsetting Bobby Knight and Indiana in 1986 (and making the sweet sixteen) and knocking off Wake Forest in 2009.

I still remember Pattons last game, Gorce's first season.  We were at the Q, had blown a 17 point lead and were down 2 with 2 minutes remaining.  We had just made the first foul shot and I thought that if we missed the 2nd and get the rebound, we could tie the game.  Patton had come up with several rebounds off missed foul shots during the season.  Instead, Groce subs Kostelac for Patton.  We miss, Klac does not even attempt to get the rebound and runs back on defense.  On the next 2 possessions he misses a layup and commits a turnover.  Game over.  I think Cotton had a meltdown that game and he also left nest season.  Went home pissed at Groce.  I always liked Pattons game and glad to see he had a great career.

He and Jayvon Graves were co-Ohio Mr. Basketball and played each other in the state championship game as I recall.  He had very few offers so Grice was able to nab him in putting his team together late.  His skill set was relatively limited as a freshman and as Kreed referenced, he probably saw the writing on the wall with talented players coming in.  He always played hard and seemed like a good kid.  He had an uncanny knack as a freshman for getting rebounds at important times.  Glad things are working out for him.

Watching CSU vs RMU in the Horizon League tournament.

Man did Patton develop well. He was slower and a bit uncoordinated at Akron. He's sped up and is real smooth on the court now. Having one heck of a second half. Wish he was still a Zip, but glad CSU is working out well for him.

Edit: Didn't realize Anderson Mirambeaux (previously recruited by Akron) ended up at CSU. He is a bowling ball of a human being. Large specimen - INCREDIBLY athletic. Moves quite well.

Last night in the Horizon League semis Torry was 2 for 10 from the floor including 0 for 3 from beyond the arc. Wright State put their 6'6" defensive specialist, Tim Finke, on him and shut him down. Torry also contributed an 0 for 2 from the stripe in CSUs losing effort.   Oh well, on to the NIT.

What a screwy format by the Horizon League. Quarterfinals on Thursday at higher seed's arena, then semifinals/finals 4-5 days later in Indy.

Hopefully Wright State wins the league. Makes our win against them look even better.

My understanding is that originally the quarterfinals were scheduled to be played on Wednesday, but several Horizon League schools complained that they needed an extra day to book rooms for the weekend at the Indy Motel 8.
