A user on the FCS message board AnyGivenSaturday.com is reporting that Arth has accepted the position, for whatever that's worth. As good as any other source we've had in this coaching search. :unsure2:

I can't imagine Akron paying off his contract at UTC.  But he also may be the best available at our price point.

The posters on Chattanooga Moc Nation are beginning to talk as if Arth is gone.  But they're citing a lot of the speculation from ZipsNation. Lol.  Not entirely, but mostly.

But where there's smoke...

Again, I'm going to have to trust LW because in my heart I was hoping for either Kehres or Getsy.

Seems like their board is hoping he takes the job & our board is hoping he doesn’t.

Doesnt make you feel warm & fuzzy about Arth

2005 MAC Championship with JD Brookhart was the best accomplishment the program made.  Bowl games are nice but MAC champions should always be the greatest goal.

Agree, have to at least be competitive to win the division every year. Not that you win it every year, obviously. But,you have to be at least 5-3 in conference to do that.

Brookhart did what he needed to do the first two years he was here. He took some decent talent leftover from Owens' teams, added some decent talent of his own and won a MAC championship. Got left out of a Bowl game in 2004. Hopefully, the next coach can accurately evaluate what is left on the roster after graduations, transfers and de-commits,bring in a few good pieces and at least get back to .500 next year. If nothing else,if the next guy can put a competent offense on the field they should pick up a couple of wins. But,lets see who that next guy is ,for sure, and lets see which players stick around and which do not.

So the leading candidate LW has zeroed in on is a coach that moved up two levels and took over a 36-16 team over 4 years and turned them into a 9-13 team that finished this year losing 5 of its last 7 games? That warrants a jump to another level? Can we look some more?

Agree.  But I'm still questioning this "leading candidate" rumor/meme. There's something on the UTC blog from a new commit to UTC who met with Arth over the weekend.

Yes, I definitely won't be as excited if we hire Arth as I was when we signed Bowden or Groce and I imagine that sentiment is mostly felt a crossed this entire board. That being said I really don't care about winning headlines before a coach coaches his first game. I care about where he is able to lead the program. I'll give whoever it is a chance. If I don't like their performance 3-4 years into their tenure, I'll be back here with my pitchfork.

Here is a new candidate Tony Alford (Ohio State RB coach) mentioned in an article about John Nemec being let go by Akron in the Record Courier. Alford played for Nemec & he would hope to stay on staff if Alford would get the job

I feel even Kehres has question marks. He inherited a program that his dad built into the Alabama of D3 football and his dad is still heavily involved in the program. It's much easier to recruit when you've built a program to a point that you're boosters offer players "academic scholarships" while much of your competition relies on walk-ons. I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good hire as frankly I don't know. I just feel thinking he's an automatic slam dunk isn't looking at the whole picture.

Hmm.  The Director of Player Personnel was a former HS coach and past retirement age.  Am I misunderstanding the importance of that job?

I spoke to Nemec a couple months ago. A big part of his job is just helping newer student athletes get adjusted to college life. Finding their way around campus, scheduling classes...he helps them with a lot of the stuff most people would take for granted, but that's critical for an 18 year old kid who's away from home for the first time needs.

He's not drawing up X's and O's or going out and recruiting. He doesn't have a big salary. I was surprised to learn he was only allowed to travel with the team to one of the OOC away games.

He's the perfect guy for that position. He seems to be a helpful "surrogate grandfather" to a lot of the kids, but with the added benefit of being a HS football coach for 40 years. I think his dad even coached at Penn Hills for a couple decades. A good, unsung hero of the Zips staff that took some administrative burden off the coaches and let them focus on their jobs. I'd hope the new staff would consider keeping him around. At least for the full transition year.

Surprised to find out how "little" Bowden was making at Akron.  Iowa State just gave Campbell an extension on his $3.5 million contract and an extra $1 million for his assistant coaches.  In Ames, Iowa!  The arms race for head coaches' pay is crazy.  And I know who will be paying more for season tickets next year!

Big 12 teams are on average making $36.5 million per year from their TV deal. That would be enough alone to fund Akron's entire athletic department. $4.5 million is a drop in the bucket for a Big 12 school.

Thanks for hitting the high notes here Captain.  I was going to chime in....John Nemec is a class act, a real classy guy with so many contacts in the college and high school football arena it's mind-boggling.  And you covered his position pretty much word for word what I was going to add.  He was pretty set to move to Portage Community College but their AD (you guys think LW is bad...) put the kibosh on that, and then Coach Boykin talked to TB about bringing John in, and the position was kind of molded around John's talents.  He would be a huge asset going forward, because I never got the feeling he was completely a "TB Guy".  And his wife adds to the package as being a huge Zips supporter, hosts recruits and families, and all this while she works for KSU!  John had Tra'von Chapman while at Kent Roosevelt.  If you are going to recruit Western PA, this is a guy you want to keep on staff, had his fingers in the pie all the way out to Carlisle and Harrisburg.

For now.  As a lower tier Big 12 team, we are worried about what will happen when the TV "grant of rights" expires.  I think it is 2020.  There may be a major reset at that time.  For instance, if the whole TV deal switches more to a subscription basis to watch individual teams, then Iowa State might need national support to keep its money flowing in.  Hard to imagine that many people around the country paying to see Iowa State (other than the Akron fans that we have won over!).
