Game 8- Detroit Mercy Titans

I'll take the W. Nice team effort. Still waiting for someone to stand out on the inside. I think everyone (even Mark) has shown flashes, but no consistency. We actually went without a big man for a few minutes tonight.

Nothing like a 7 minute time out for some silly contest in the middle of a run.

Nice win.  I haven't seen an example of daddy ball like that since my kid played 5th grade basketball.  Davis's kid must have taken 30 shots and daddy loses his mind and he gets a T when the kid gets called for a foul late.  Well done dad.

Lots to like about the performance but still some things to work on.  Mercy is on the level of a bottom third MAC team.  A good test this early, but 2/3 of the MAC teams will be better.

I hope Riak won't be out long.  They could use him.  If I see Jayden Sayles turn to go for a rebound and not put his body on an opponent's body one more time, I may lose my mind.

It seemed to take them a little while to find that hole in the zone, at the elbow with Daniel and JImond.  Once they figured that out and Mercy failed to adjust, they did well.

LCJ has a certain attitude.  Someone is going to deck him one of these games.  His team won, and he was jawing with the other team.

And? He can talk as much as he wants as long as it doesn't give the other team points. Attitude is good. I bet a lot of people jaw at him too due to his size.

I missed it but heard Channel and one of the Mercy players were jawing each other at the end.

i get it.  they are intense players going at a high level.  and i like that they have that attitude and killer instinct.  but it was really clear from where I was that it wasn't necessary.  refs were good tonight about letting things play out.  good point on Detroit being like a lower tier MAC team.  Reminded me of the last Miami team under John Cooper.

It's encouraging to me that we can struggle to score for an entire half, and still win by double digits.

Uhh...not encouraging to GT.  First line from his lame article:

"It’s fortunate style points have little to do with actual basketball games because, based on the performance of the University of Akron men’s team Saturday, the Zips would get few.":puke:

Go watch the NBA or Duke or the playground if you want style points, GT. I'll take fundamental basketball all day long. He has got to go.

don't think he should be giving any one tips on "style."  how many assists did Akron have compared to Detroit?  18 to 4 or something like that.  I consider that plenty of selfless style.

Mercy's offense reminded me of the Cavs in World B. Free's heyday, with Antoine Davis in the role of World B. Free taking half of the team's shots.

Highlights from Sunshine GT's latest journalistic upchuck -

* It’s fortunate style points have little to do with actual basketball games because, based on the performance of the University of Akron men’s team Saturday, the Zips would get few.

* Still, at a time when the Zips (6-2) want to be preparing for the Mid-American Conference schedule, they look as if progress is stalled.

*  Despite the win, the inability to put together a complete game could prove frustrating. Although the Titans (3-5) deserve credit for beating the Zips 14-11 in offensive rebounds and converting those opportunities into 13 points, UA’s problems were caused more by self-inflicted wounds and the inability to make shots.

That is such lazy ass writing.  "deserve credit" "self inflicted wounds" "inability to make shots" "progress is stalled"   He writes like those guys who blog for MAC Hustlebelt.

How about:  " Senior Jimond Ivey lights up the arena with 25 points and 12 rebounds and the Zips defense stymies Detroit Mercy"

I thought the Zips did a great job in the second half attacking the zone.  They were able to get the ball into the elbow where they were able to make some short jumpers or pass to an open cutter for a layup.  They stopped trying to shoot the 3 ball on every trip and were much more effective.  Ivey had one of his best games.  We had trouble connecting with our big men when attacking the zone.  I thought they played really well as a team.

At the end the Detroit mercy guy was on offense and was dribbling out the game but he kept talking while he was dribbling.  I believe that is what led to the brief scuffle at the end.  However, Jackson did shake hands with the guy at the end of the game and it was not a big deal.
