There is a lot of room for more transfers.

Who will enroll for the spring semester?  Some of these young men could play a roll next fall.  It would be nice for them to get a head start with spring ball.

I agree. And we still need to land another (or two) JUCO/portal CB. That’s not a knock on our newly signed freshmen as I’m high on them, but some veteran experience would help.

Yeah I expect from now until the summer we will add at least a handful of transfer portal players with maybe a couple additional high schools who may have slipped through the cracks. For that to happen though, we'll need more players to transfer out.

@catdaddypdo you know when programs are technically required to be down to the 85 limit? Is it by the start of fall camp? If so, that gives us some flexibility.

I believe the 85 scholarship limit kicks in at the start of the academic school year, but that may have changed.

We’ll definitely have a chance to land some talented players. At the current rate, the portal will have between 3,000 to 4,000 players to choose from before the start of the 2023 season.

I'm not 100% sure but I think you can only carry 85 every semester. So starting in January they have to be at 85. Think about it, if that wasn't the case schools could carry 100 as almost a try out and they get rid of them at the end of the school year. I'm sure there are plenty that will not be back when school starts in January - they need to make room on the ship

That makes sense and it may be right. I do know many of our new signees won't start until summer camp, so while signed, they technically shouldn't count against anything for spring ball. In my loose following of Ohio State, I occasionally see posts on twitter pop up about them "getting down" to 85 after a player enters the portal. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that you can have over 85 accounted for at any given point, as long as you get down to the number when required.

I definitely suspect we'll see a decent amount of transfers be added by the next signing period. We need experience, we need mature size, and quite frankly we still need talent.

Did the St. Francis guy commit anywhere?

One of the St Francis guys committed to Maryland. The other is still in the portal.

I think any additional HS players will be walk on's.  I do expect about a dozen JU/CO's and higher level transfers.  We need to land some O & D linemen and DB's.

I don't know how the TP portal works.  When a player enters the portal, doesn't he give up his scholarship?  In order to be academically eligable in the fall, wouldn't they need to be enrolled some where in the spring to gain the minimum academic progress?  That would be a big incentive to commit in a hurry.

When a player enters the portal he is giving up his scholarship. While the majority of players in the portal have the blessing of the team, there are some players that the team doesn't want to lose. The team still has the option to keep them on scholarship if they come back.

With our less than illustrious history I'll gladly take #4 in the MAC... especially with portal commits yet to be factored in.  Our transfers did well last year & JoeMo should be able to use that as a selling point.

@catdaddyp for clarity, the above ranking does not include Lingard, Jones, or Rabah?

Correct. Lingard, Jones, amd Rabah are not yet included in the rankings. This will be the first year Rivals has included transfers into their final rankings, but I don’t know what date they will officially be added.

According to the Captain, if the Zips finish in the top 102 it will be their highest ranking since 2010.

Either way; 100 or 102; talk about setting the bar low.

Still, can't wait for our victory over Temple next September 2nd.
