Wow! 84 ft is ~double (if not more) what the current video board is. The new board will essentially take up the real estate that is currently occupied by 1990s advertisement pieces. Here is the comparison...

This coupled with better sound management (we need to let the band play more instead of obnoxiously blaring music constantly) will be a big boost to the gameday experience.

There is a legitimate financial commitment being made by a select group of donors to Akron Athletics. Very encouraging.

This is great and much needed. I wonder what will happen with the sponsor cards that were on the old scoreboard. That was prime real estate and eyes were drawn there, do they program additional advertising to be displayed on the videoboard? Or do we they sell space on the fences or endzone padding like in baseball? Just trying to understand that sponsorship revenue stream.

I’d assume that they will be bumped out to the sides just like it is now.

There's an entire section of steel at the front of the away side upper deck that would normally be occupied by a scoreboard ribbon if we had P4 money. That is prime advertising real estate that I can't believe hasn't been utilized yet. Every camera angle from the press box that isn't directly zoomed in on the field would capture the signage.

There is a new high definition ribbon board being installed at the base of the upperdeck on the east grandstand in addition to the new main board. This and the size of the main board will open up much more in the way of local sponsorship/advertising. BTW, all of this was paid for by Learfield. Around $1 million.

That is going to look incredibly good and really complete the stadium. I'd imagine the original plan was to put a ribbon board there a while back before the team started sucking and private donors stayed away.

Surprised Learfield is allowed to pay for something like this considering they work with multiple colleges. Thanks for the info, Hilltopper!

A few roster notes:

OL Keon Kindred is no longer listed.

DL LaJoshua Jackson is no longer listed.

DB David Jester is no longer listed.

DB Zayden Laing-Taylor is no longer listed.

JUCO signee WR Jacobi Moore still isn’t listed. He’s probably not coming at this point.

DT Zy Brockington (Memphis) has been added.

Not that it matters much, but both of the Fraziers are currently listed as DEs.

All other signings that were not enrolled in the spring are now listed.

2 Long Snappers, 3 Kicker, and 1 Punter are currently listed.

@catdaddyp, how do you think our OL may line up w/o Kindred at RT?

@taylormade28, can you give us the scoop on Zayden? Is he working on academics or is he transferring out?

I'm disappointed Jester is no longer listed. He caught my eye this spring as a great-looking athlete.

My best guess on the OL would be:

LT - Blanchard

LG - Lyons

C - Williams

RG - Seymore

RT - Thomas

Davis could also start in place of Lyons. Wouldn’t be surprised to see James, Morris, and Mann work their way somewhere onto the 2 deep with a strong summer. I’m curious to see how Fields and Shor factor in as well. Regardless of who starts, this will be the most athletic OL we’ve had in Moorhead’s tenure - by far.

Disappointing about Laing-Taylor and Jester. Both looked the part.

Aman Greenwood, Paul Lewis lll,Joey Hunter,Elijah Reed, and Justin Anderson. Were all brought in at DB. Laing-Taylor and Jester’s time was likely to be limited.

I think the additions of Reed and DeWalt may have been in response to the losses of Jester and Laing-Taylor. Regardless, I’m looking forward to what they can bring to the table. Hunter was added last year and could be an All-MAC CB if he can stay healthy. He’s dealt with injuries since his time at South Carolina. If he’s healthy he should start opposite of Golden-Nelson.  I know Laing-Taylor was working in with the 2s before his issue and I believe Jester was too, so they were both in the running for the two deep. That said, I agree that Greenwood and Lewis will likely at least see starter type of snaps.

What was “his issue”? I assume grades?

I would assume it just opens up the opportunity to show different sponsors throughout the game. Not just be limited to the 10 permanently displayed. Similar to the boards at Progressive Field and Rocket Mortgage. Two of the biggest video displays in the country and 25% of them tends to be used for advertising.

I don't think we've got a general preseason 2024 thread going yet, so I'll post this here.

Nice, of course, but where did this money come from? Athletic department debt and overall UA debt in the millions and fall enrollment projected to be down again..... I'm a bit confused.

In the article it says "Funding for the project was provided through private donations"

I am glad that UA has benefactors, but I'd still argue that those generous boosters are not seeing the elephant in the room.

What is the elephant?

Should we have just told Learfield "No thank you. Our dilapidated 2008-era scoreboard is perfectly fine in 2024."?

No, I understand you can't tell a "booster" what to do, but that doesn't make what I'm saying less true.  UA is in deep trouble as an institution of higher learning. Wait until the September enrollment figures come in.  These supporters seem to be focused on a luxuray while the ship, if not sinking yet, has certainly hit the iceberg. Also, let's be realistic; does that new dispaly do anything to turn UA football around?  Really?  Maybe that same money could have been invested into NIL, which has more of a chance of getting Zippy to a bowl than a display that is seen by 5,000 people five times a year in a sadium buit for 30k?
