With the NCAA tournament pretty much being a win 3 in Cleveland to get in tournament for MAC teams (although let’s just go 18-0 and see if at large talk happens) the only thing I really pay attention to NET and the various ranking systems for is NIT consideration should we somehow falter in Cleveland.

The NIT once again has new criteria this year. Before last year they eliminated the auto bid for conference regular season champs that failed to win their conference tourney but this year they somewhat brought it back as you will get in if you win your conference and you are ranked an average of 125 or better across the ranking systems they consider. So still not good for a lot of conferences but the MAC could benefit. Last year Toledo was 129 and would’ve just missed. This year, though, Akron is hovering in the upper 80s and low 90s at this point.

I actually hadn't heard about the NIT bringing some auto-bids back. That's at least a positive over the disaster that it was for mid-majors last year.

Yeah, hopefully it works out for Miami

No, hopefully not since it only applies to regular season conference champs.

Hopefully it’s just an unneeded backup plan for the Zips.

I remember Akron have a very long winning streak and my memory was that we lost at Buffalo.  It was the 2012-2013 season and the streak went to 19 games and then we lost 2 of out last 2 of 3 to Buffalo and Kent in the regular season.  We made the NCAA and only had to play 2 games because of the byes and then we got killed by VCU in Detroit when illness hit the team.

I also remember another MAC team having a long winning streak, Kent or Buffalo? and that the streak ended I believe at Norther Illinois and the students stormed the court.  It bugs me so if anyone can help I would like to know the team with the streak and where it stopped.

Your first paragraph is correct, although it's missing the detail of Abreu's arrest during the last week or so of the season. They regrouped after Kent, beat Jim Christian's Bobcats with Groce's roster by 19 in the title game, then got embarrassed in Auburn Hills with over half the team out due to the flu.

Buffalo lost at NIU during the 2018-19 season. I don't remember the court storming, and can only picture all 5 fans in attendance overpowering the security guards to get onto the floor. It wasn't a long winning streak (6 games), but Buffalo was ranked 14th at the time.

Thanks!!!  I do remember the court storming because it obviously made an impression on me.   Is it harder to imagine Norther Illinois beating a ranked team or that there were more than 5 people in the stands or that there was real excitement in the stands at an N. Illinois game. (See video, all 3 are true)

It just reminds me that MAC basketball has lost a lot of its fan base.  We are undefeated in MAC play, and we struggle to fill half the Jar.  Back in 2018-2019 having an undefeated MAC team or ranked team would draw butts in the seats.  I will be curious to see the attendance at Central Michigan.

I remember watching that game.  Thorpe, German, McCarty and Coach Montgomery.

In hindsight NIU should have just kept Montgomery. Being a middle of the pack MAC program is their ceiling given how little support they get.

He's made progress with the Detroit program.  Always liked him for whatever reason.

One thing I thought we might see more of this season with the increased depth is more pressure on defense.  We've seen little or no backcourt pressure and the 1-3-1 trapping defense has been used only sparingly.  I guess that the fact that the Zips have often been in the lead could have impacted this as well as there being so many new players and the priorities of getting them up to speed being different.

Nobody wants this, as you can tell by the crowd's reaction. However, I would be ok with the expansion if the following became true...

- Conference play is year round - not just January through March - for all conferences

- Power Conference teams must play X amount of true road games at mid majors

- Auto bid for all regular season conference champs with a NET ranking in the top XX

Why would any of that happen? All that will happen is a more 18-14 power conference teams would get in.
