vs. Indiana - Away - NCAA Tournament

Recommended Posts

Yep really seemed like the injury to Mitch was the turning point. You surely can't expect a true freshman with no playing time to live up to Mitch's standard. He did the best he could. Damn it. I'll be rooting against Indiana for as long as they're in the tournament now.

The blessing of lack of injuries through the season caught up with the Zips today. They were remarkably fortunate to have very little missed time from injuries.  Those starters are beat to hell and just ran out of gas, not to mention losing Budler.
Kaminski battled in a tough spot.

We got that goal and just went into play not to lose mode. We weren’t even playing conservative, just launching the ball down whenever we had a chance

Eh, we stayed aggressive until Mitch went down. Whole style of play changed and we were on our heals for the rest of the game.

Thank you to the 7 seniors.......that left everything out on the pitch today and all year.

Malik Henry

Dyson Clapier

Emil Jaaskelainen

Beto Ydrach

Jonas Buechte

Wan Kuzri Wan Kamal

Victor Gaulmin

They were ironmen all year......They were rarely subbed off

the zips that were on the team for several years.....all improved very much during their time at the U.

Best wishes to all 7 starting seniors ...wherever the future takes you.

Zips Nation loved to watch the 7 of you compete.

THANK YOU

Goal IU on a header. Damn. Akron wins if Mitch doesn't get hurt. That just sucks. Hope IU goes down hard next round - not a lot of respect for how they play.

What happened to Mitch? I tuned in late.

Looked like either a broken collarbone or separated shoulder. Had control of a through ball and IU attacker launched into him. At best careless play,  but dirty play in my opinion.

I agree on dirty.

Dyson also got elbowed in the face...and he had to leave due to concussion protocol

Ewbroo - I will be the third to say it was dirty. I don't know if the intent was to necessarily make contact with Mitch, but he certainly chose to dive. He had a bad touch that put the ball too far forward, and instead of conceding and jumping over the goalie at the top of the box, he chose to flop, and threw himself towards the ball. Mitch was already on it, and the IU player landed directly into his shoulder.

If the refs had cajones, they would've told IU to cut the 💩 early with the flopping. Ended up hurting Akron - literally - and of course altered the game completely. The goal by IU was more of an inexperienced freshman mistake than anything, one that I don't think Mitch would've made. The ball was played over the top, the IU player corraled it pretty well which I think surprised Kaminsky a bit who was already 3/4 of the way to the ball. He became indecisive and tried to retreat but the lob was already played.

You could see what was coming once IU tied it up and I declined to watch it happen (although I thought it might come down to PKs). Also, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I'm thankful that:

1. Zips/Jared pulled it together in the 2nd half of the season

2. We made the NCAA after the BE semifinal loss

3. I was able to go see some of the Princeton win and make a ticket-purchase donation to the program

The whole game they were using a wide shot of the field.  On the replay of Indiana's first goal, it was a close angle and the replays showed the Indiana player in an offside position when the ball was in the air.  I just wonder if the ref had a wide shot to show whether or not he was in an offside position when the ball was played.

I thought that IU was very talented and tough at home, but eminently beatable. More than the loss of key players I felt our style of play cost us more. We started playing long ball against Princeton and it didn't work. It is too much to expect Emil to pull a long pass out of the air with sometimes two guys hanging on him. If he does get it the service to the players running off him is not good. Again, not his fault.

We did not play our game. The ball was in the air way too much and that played to IU's physicality. Zip players were heading rather than bringing the ball down.  We are best playing the ball out of the back on the ground, getting it to the mids who find wings and  #9 getting behind the back four or in space. I feel our style would have beat IU if we had stuck to it. But when we played w/o possession we chased and got tired. The final 20 minutes IU had more energy.

If this sounds like bitching, it isn't. Despite losing two key players our depth was still able to carry us to a win. We just didn't play Akron soccer.

Well said, I would’ve thought after we didn’t have possession for long periods of time we would want a more methodical build up

Best senior class in @NCAA Soccer, quite possibly.  Is there still a Senior Class Award to the nation's best senior (which Anthony Ampaipitokwong won in 2010 at the UC-Santa Barbara College Cup)?  If so you would think it's on the foot of Emil Jääskeläinen!
