The only program added that consistently competes at a top level is Oregon. I will say at some point it's likely USC gets their crap together. Nebraska an Washington are probably middle B1G quality programs.

 

Save me the talk about how great Nebraska was in the 90s. Unless we get a time machine to wind the clocks back 30 years we won't see Nebraska have that level of success again in our life times. 

The B1G was focused on capturing the biggest schools in the largest media markets, not shopping for great programs in the middle of nowhere like the SEC mostly has. TV ratings in large markets drive the money of advertising dollars. Full stop.

As a result, if PSU were not already in the B1N 20+ years ago, Pitt may have been a more attractive current option for B1N expansion in Pennsylvania.

That was true with the additions of Rutgers and Maryland. Nebraska isn't a major market nor has it ever been. They were brought in with the belief they would be a quality program that could compete with UM, OSU, and Penn State. In hindsight the B1G won't publicly admit it, but Nebraska probably doesn't get into the B1G today as there are other programs out there that are in bigger markets who are on par or better than Nebraska.

 

UCLA only got in the B1G because USC said it was the only way they would join. Oregon was a no brainer because they are a large market, have a history of success, and have NIKE funneling them NIL money. Washington got good at the right time and were a decent travel partner for Oregon. Not to mention decent market.

 

I don't see Pitt getting in over PSU in any situation. It doesn't really matter if Pitt plays in a major city. PSU is clearly the big brother in Pennsylvania. It's why it took Cincinnati so long to get into a P4 conference. Outside of their specific city the rest of the entire state is dominated by OSU. The same is true for Pitt.

It's hilarious to me how much OSU fans complain about everything Oregon. They literally hated Dillion Gabriel up in Cleveland from day 1 and were booing him last season. All because he beat them once, got drafted instead Will Howard and swept all the Big Ten awards.

Which is why I will still root for Michigan vs. Ohio State - the Suckeyes fan base is a miserable one and it's hilarious to see them deal with failure.

Nebraska was added in 2011 as it was being kicked out of the AAU, making it the only Big Ten member to not also be an AAU member. It was very poor decision-making all around for the conference.

 

I think UCLA, Oregon, and Washington were must haves for the Big Ten because it gives the conference the entire west coast, except for the SF market (and Stanford and Cal are not big basketball or football schools).

 

Agree to disagree about the Pitt versus Penn State addition if it were to happen now.

That's not really a good argument. He was objectively a bad starting QB. All 32 fanbases would be booing him. Not like you're saying they were booing the next Tom Brady.

They hated Dillon Gabriel because they wanted Shedeur to start, not because Gabriel went to Oregon.

And of all the MAC teams playing B1G teams, we were the only to surrender less than 54. Makes 41-7 look decent, but we were better than that.
