  1. While he's had some joke calls go against him in the past, he puts himself in poor positions. If he's in positions to foul 80% of the time, he's not going to get the benefit of the doubt as much the other 20%, right or wrong. If you look at this last game, there were a few times he was straight up when contesting, but a majority of the time he would come over top of the defender or briefly leave his feet. It's frustrating because I think Mark can develop into a very solid player. He has the athleticism and physical ability to be a threat at this level, it's just getting him comfortable and up to speed. This EMU game could be HUGE for his development because he'll be going against Thompson. It'll be interesting to see if he can play up to Thompson's level, and if the energy and emotion that Kostelac brings to the floor can rattle Thompson, who is prone to get T'd up as previously mentioned. I still for the life of me can't figure out how Mark wasn't called for a foul on his put-back late in the BG game, but I'm not complaining.

  2. Kostalac needs to not leave his feet while playing D. I'd recommend he not try so much to block shots; just put his arms straight up & make them shoot over you.

  3. This is a very important/significant comment for Zips fans to keep in mind (especially to those that get down on JE early in seasons). We get good players (not necessarily ***** players all the time). But, when they come to Akron, they are coached and developed by an amazing coaching staff - Moutinho is the most recent example. Akron soccer is like what Kentucky is to college basketball. The bad news for us is we have to reload and gel every year. I realize other teams have players who leave early too but could you imagine if some of the players we've had in the last decade would have stayed for 2,3,4 years!! We would have won the last 5 College Cups. JE is the best soccer coach in college soccer PERIOD!!

  4. You're new to being a Zips fan, so I wanted to give you a heads up: this happens a lot. MAC refs BLOW and are probably some of the most inconsistent referees in all of basketball. There used to be a lot of griping on this board when it came to the refereeing. Poor officiating has become so incredibly common, we've shut up for the most part. Whenever you hear about the refs on this board in a negative way, you KNOW it's bad.

  5. I know we have yet to officially get the road-monkey off our back, but the refs kind of just treated the Zips as the visiting team on their own home court and they still prevailed. The Zips impressively took a huge step forward with mental toughness. I am hoping going forward, regardless of who is on the court the Zips start to gain more and more confidence and swagger and push through adversity with consistent effort. That way Angry Groce is free to direct his ire at lousy calls instead of his own team.

  6. Kotelac of rest? Rec Center Smith to the rescue! If I were Groce, I would take some staff and players to the rec center before our next home game and mix it up a little bit. What a golden opportunity to create the same kind of support that Porter had with soccer. It was one rebound, but it could be the start of a turn around for us.

  7. I'm surprised a school like Can't didn't offer him. They had interest in him, and Joey seems to be their prototypical QB - undersized, athletic, etc. At 6'1" 190 lbs, I'm not too surprised he didn't get much DI interest. It looks like he had walk-on offers from a few DI schools, but he's smart to at least get the full ride scholarship, regardless of where it's at. If his University of Virginia wrestling scholarship wasn't a full ride, I think he made the best life decision from a financial aspect.

  8. Amen, you and Let'sGoZips94 are all over it!! I would just add that Kostalac has to trust that once he beats his guy to the spot, walls off and stops the dribble drive that his teammates are going to drop down and help double or triple team.

  9. There were a lot of inconsistent calls and maybe he impressed the refs with his move and they rewarded him

  10. I personally think he can be a beast with his size and athleticism. A red-shirt year this year would have benefited him and I think he could be a candidate for one next year (even though he might not like it). More time learning, getting acclimated, and working on his figure could do wonders for him down the road.

  11. He does need to foul less, but some of the calls seem to be a joke, especially last game.

  13. Watched The Business of Amateurs recently and found that Scott Ross, USC teammate of Seau, also died. The movie essentially said it was a result of CTE. Yet, these kids can't get 4 year guarantees.

  14. dre? Oh dre??? Where are you on this one dre? What Groce did today with what he had on the floor at the end had to make you proud to have him as the head coach.....no retread talk, now. Sorry for the trolling....

  17. He had open heart surgery. While it's tough to lose him, there was initial fear that this was something potentially even more serious than it was. I'll leave the rest of details for E/the team to share if they choose, out of respect to both.

  18. Sure would be nice to have some info on this. I'll bet GT is knocking doors down for info and will something before E-man graduates.

  19. I pray the surgery is successful & that E-man recovers fully and quickly.

  20. USA Today released its grades for college football programs (rather subjectively related to "reaching their potential"). Akron got a B+ and was listed first in its grade level because of alphabetical order. Iowa State got an A. Nice to see both teams get some recognition for seasons that were beyond just about everyone's expectations.
