After losing some close games it was nice to see 4 clutch plays at the end of the game by our big four players. Cheese hit a long 3 pointer, LCJ hit a floater in the lane, passed the ball to Williams and fell down in front of Williams so the the defender could not get in his face, Williams made the 3 with 4 seconds left and Banks made the defensive play at the end of the game. This team needed to win a game by playing well in the last minute.2 points

The first place Bowling Green Falcons come into the JAR to face the Zips Tuesday night. The Falcons are 8-2 in the MAC. They are coming off of a last second 85-83 win over their biggest rival, Toledo. The Falcons are led by All-MAC 6'4" junior guard Justin Turner at 19 ppg. Turner had a hamstring injury early in the season that slowed him down but not seems to have his legs back under him. 6'6" junior guard/forward Daeqwon Plowden leads rebounding at 8+ rpg while also kicking in 12 ppg. The Falcons were dealt a blow today when their second leading scorer Dylan Frye left the team for "personal reasons." Here's hoping Matiss Kulackovskis still has those awful braids in his hair. This is a HUGE game for the Zips.1 point

In defense of Reece, I thought at least two of his fouls were ticky tack at best. One involved the player behind him (Toure) reaching over for a rebound but the ref calling white 5. offensively his hands are so much better than Deng's. I think they need to give Sayles a few minutes earlier in game too -not just when Cam and Deng are fouled out. As of today in the NET ratings Akron has dropped to 88. Still tops in MAC. Amazingly BG is 1541 point

No doubt about it! PS I hate MAC refs. That was just not fun to watch. Absolutely zero flow to the game1 point

The biggest coaching issue was EMU trying to bleed the clock up 2 pts with almost 4 mins left in the game. Their offense is bad to begin with and holding the ball forced them into multiple bad last second shots and a shot clock violation or two.1 point

I'd normally agree, but EMU came in something like 340th in the country in ft% and was making <50% for the game.1 point

Word. I said the same thing to the folks around me. "That damn zone is more important than anything else." In Groce's interview with Frenchy after the game, he said they were playing the odds that EMU would miss FTs. Why did Murphy call timeout when Akron didn't have any and his player was on the line?1 point

Can't believe we won that game, but I'll take it. We got incredibly lucky at the end with EMU choking and our players finally hitting some shots. Obviously I'm happy we were able to come out with the win, but am I the only one who has a real problem with Groce's end of game strategy today, even though it ended up working out??!! I just cannot get behind giving the opponent free points with just under a minute left while we are only down one score. Regardless, can we kick EMU and their boring a$$ style of play out of the MAC already?? Why would any player want to play for that program? Incredibly boring style of play. I don't recall a team EVER not trying to rebound on their own player's FT attempts regularly throughout a game. They'd rather make sure they are set up in their lame zone. The true CBB equivalent of "parking the bus". ?1 point

After the game I went to the scorers table where they were replaying the block in slow motion several times and there was no foul. Banks got 2 hands on the ball and just held onto the ball. That is why he hit the floor so hard because he did not use his hands to break his fall. It was a great defensive play!1 point

If you're ony going to lead a few minutes, make sure it includes the last one.1 point

Sounds like they needed a "mental" break as well. They were getting tight. Cheese needs to be smooth and fluid...like melted Velveeta.1 point

Fortunately, there are lots of great Zips players from whom to choose in those years. Unfortunately, there are lots of great players who can't all be selected. No right or wrong to this; no way to prove which of these players would play better together than others. Soccer America may have chosen Kofi Sarkodie as a better player than Darlington Nagbe in 2010, but the 2010 MAC Hermann Trophy (best player in D1 college soccer) went to Darlington Nagbe. Kofi was a phenomenal RB for the Zips... no question. DeAndre Yedlin may not be perfect; no one is. However, DeAndre Yedlin has gone on to be the most successful professional to have ever come out of the Akron ZIps Men's Soccer program. Started his first year with the Sounders; playing in the EPL; 2014 USMNT World Cup team, etc. So, if someone votes for DeA over Kofi, they have reason to do so. There are also reasons others may vote otherwise. Choosing between 3 great goal keepers was equally difficult. There were reasons to vote for any of them. Voting for all of the other positions is going to be just as tough. In the end, to me, this all decade team is just something that gives us reason to think back on these great players and how lucky we've been that they chose to come to Akron, be a fellow student and alumnus, and to play for themselves and us. EDIT 2/25/20: convinced now that there is a right and wrong approach to this voting.1 point
