After the OU debacle and everyone having them most likely finishing 1-11 (me included), this was great for the team. They played hard and may have some life for the second half of the season. This will be the best bus ride the team has had in at least 3 seasons. Go Zips!4 points

It isn’t sarcasm. It’s truth. Keep hoping the Zips straw turns to gold. I hope you’re right. But I see nothing that portends anything but a team that is too small, too slow and too unathletic to win more than 1 or 2 games in year FOUR of Arth’s tenure. Winning 1 in year #3 is etched in stone. This gives him a total of 3-4 wins over 4 years. Is that what he sold Larry Williams on when he was hired? Bowden took over worse. Owens took over worse. And both those guys year # 4 blows away where we’ll be at the end of 2022. Arth has grossly underestimated the talent level needed to compete in the MAC. And if we have only 2 wins to show for his efforts after 3 seasons, it is unprecedented that people would say he merits a 4th year. We’re 12th in the MAC, and it is unbelievable how much we’d need to improve just to move to the 11th slot. Paying off an underperforming coach’s last 2 years is a cost of doing business in big boy football. If we finish 2021 with 1 FCS win, it is time to move on. Cuz we ain’t winning more than 1 game in 2022 if he stays. Show me anything other than hope that portends anything different.4 points

I know it's the American football thread but Akron men's soccer plays tonight at home at 7p against George State (new to MAC soccer this year). Go Zips!3 points

You know you’ve arrived as a program when you can hang with the likes of Temple and OU for an entire half.3 points

How did Minnesota lose to BG? Unbelievable. Gibson looks incredible. That's Arth's recruit, too. I don't understand Arth. As critical as we are of him, he's at least a good person and someone you want to root for (unlike Ianello). I just don't understand him. The team plays hard for him. But how did he think Kato was the guy over Irons or Gibson? Stuff like that is extremely puzzling.2 points

This is the worst football game I've ever seen. I might just watch this for the comedy factor. A mediocre FCS team could beat BG and OU. We're FAR beneath that.2 points

... or did Gibson's play motivate this team? I realize the goal line stand was there in the 1st quarter but both sides of the ball looked different 2nd half.1 point

I was on the road all day. Looks like someone saved their job today. I'll admit that I thought they were done. To Arth's credit, it can't be easy to motivate a team that has had the Zips record but he obviously pulled it off today.1 point

If you're unfamiliar with the game in general, it's a great way to get into it! I recommend parking in Lot #2 next to the JAR. Walk over to the stadium and grab a ticket. I'm not entirely clear on the prices for single games as a season ticket holder, but I think a reserved seat would be in the $20 range but others might know better. GA obviously cheaper, but a better view might be helpful. It should be a really fun environment tonight and beautiful weather, it'll be a great night! My favorite thing about soccer games is the feeling of connectedness with the University. The stadium is beautiful and sits smack in the middle of campus, and the student showing, though not what it used to be, is really cool to see, especially after a win. Enjoy!1 point

Yes, she did! The the player I thought should have been benched was on it! I saw some flashes of good coaching: rotating in fresh players to give the coach's darlings a rest, giving the defense pause when a new number showed up; mixing things up so the defense wondered if the "new shirt" was there for a trick play. Just a few flashes, though. Why in hades were they still running #18 with a 15 point lead in the last 2 minutes!!! When the game was in hand, the coaches should have been mining for another diamond in the rough. Get your starters out of there so no injuries occur.1 point

Walk On, give that young man a scholarship and take away one from the ones that have them and are watching the walk on pull the wagon.Who is in charge of evaluating talent here?Cause I don’t get it.1 point

No matter how pathetic BG is, man I am PROUD of this team. The goal line stand early gave them life when things seemed to be heading for the tipping point. And obviously Gibson was a tremendous shot in the arm. They played hard and motivated when they got down, maybe the coach speak is paying off?? Ha! This is a sign of life. It should be at least the third win of the season, but we'll take this all day long. When you play with swagger and confidence, you have a chance. As coach Lasso says, "Believe." Let's celebrate, Zips fans!1 point

Don't think we're going to be able to count on five turnovers as a sustainable strategy but damn it feels good. That pencil must be worn down to a nub. 🤔 We want Minnesota! 🤣😂🤣1 point

The Pat McAfee Showed used the A with the Roo on their ticker the other day. I think it's best that media outlets ignore our script Akron memo.1 point

The most frustrating part for me is I cannot tell where the poor player evaluation/recruiting ends and the poor coaching begins. Nothing I see from Arth gives me any confidence in his ability, but we are so over matched every game that it is tough to evaluate anything I watch. We are a FBS program with FCS talent that sometimes looks more like NAIA level.1 point

I have an ESPN + subscription but ESPN3 is another channel. However last night I went to gozips.com/soccer where they list each game and link who if anyone is airing it. I hit the ESPN3 link they provided and voila! there it was. It was a weird defense Southern was playing as they were conceding possession by playing no press until the final 3rd of the field. Thus they had little chance to score. I'm sure Coach Embick didn't complain.1 point

So what's your explanation for us hanging with Temple and OU in the first half if we have no talent on the team. Love you sideline QBs that have all the answers. Simple fact, it's not easy to recruit or convince a player in the portal to come to Akron and play for various reasons. You either need to find young talent and develop them or bring in a head coach with name recognition that players will be attracted to play for. Problem is the latter is more difficult to find than the young talent.1 point

Being young is one thing. Being young, and bereft of talent is another. We went 0-12...1-5...and are staring 1-11 in the face this season. I can't see adding a year of experience to what we have have on the field today making any difference in 2022. If we are only young, and somehow these larvae are going to turn into butterflies next year, I don't see it. Our lines, and LB's are completely overmatched by the worst of the MAC this season. Why in the era of transfers would anyone even try the "build with Freshman" approach? I think we are young, plus woefully bare in talent. We need more Irons-like talent...like 10 more of him...before we're competitive in the MAC, let alone OOC.1 point

Kalle is very much the wild card for this team. We'll discover if the UCLA and Rutgers offers were real or make believe. I notice his weight is now listed as 225, while a year ago it was 180. 👀1 point

Its called youth. Our guys are undersized because of age and have not had that extra year or two to bulk up. We hang with teams physically in the first half but as the game wears on our guys just can not get it done later in the game when they are getting tired. Also, I have noticed that mentally we get down on ourselves when things do not go our way. Again experience matters here too and we just do not have an experienced core.1 point

The number I believe Larry Williams stated previously was $10 million. 4.5 million of which was the cost of the stadium. That means the football program costs ~5.5 million on an operational standpoint. In addition to the 3.6 million we received in guarantees, we receive another 800k as part of our TV deal. We receive another million or so from the CFP distribution. Add in ticket, parking, sponsorship, etc. and football makes enough to cover itself on the operations side. It bleeds money on the stadium, but we are stuck paying that regardless.1 point
