How many guys have even left? A DL coach and a recruiting coordinator? I feel like this is probably not more turnover than the average program4 points

Bobcat meltdowns are the best. Definitely entertaining. There is an element of truth in what is said though. Our budget is driven by enrollment which has fallen as noted by near 50%. We have used this as an opportunity to get rid of underperforming faculty, which is a plus. So we took lemons and made lemonade. I don't mind the criticism about adjunct faculty. We do have too many. That shouldn't take away from the strong academics we have in the majority of our programs. Our focus has always been to offer quality education to students who can't afford to go away to school. At the same time we offer a residential college experience for those who want it. I'm proud of our students, graduates and fanatics. If OU is so superior they are failing miserably when we compete. Denigrate us all you want, maybe that makes OU fans feel better. I like the rivalry.4 points

Unfortunately, "fan" is short for "fanatic" and sometimes people with unrealistic expectations can be a bit much. Too many of my brethren over there think that every year should be an NCAA tourney year or the sky is falling. We whiffed on some transfers, talent left for greener pastures, and here we are in the "down" of an up and down couple of years. This game went about as I expected. I hold hope that we can return the favor when you come to Athens, only time will tell. Right now, I just want to beat the Eastern Michigan Fighting Bates' tonight. Freeman and Castaneda are a heck of a 1-2 punch in this league.3 points

Ohio just loves being in the middle of BF nowhere and wearing that as a badge of honor. But OU really is awesome. They have probably the nicest campus in the league, and the nicest arena. But haven’t won a football title in *checks notes* 55 years and just lost to rinky-dink Akron while giving up a 30-piece to a walk-on who wore braces last year as tournament MVP. Man, I’d love to be a Bobcat. Did you know they have 2 breweries in town AND a Taco John’s?!?! Best we can do is about 15 breweries and Swenson’s ☹️3 points

When I was 15, an OU “student” who came to watch them get blown out at the JAR told me to suck his **** as the game was winding down. He was the kindest, most un-angry person I had ever encountered in my life!2 points

I can't imagine a Georgia kid would come to Akron in late January without being seriously interested in becoming a Zip?2 points

I miss the old "first Wednesday in February" signing day. I used to go down to the University for every press conference. There were always some good stories. Coaches would give a power point highlighting all the recruits and say a little about them. Many names were a surprise...not like now, where every player and school can announce their commitment via their own social media. One funny memory - Eugene Jarvis was being recruited by both Kent and Akron. Once Jarvis' power point slide showed up, Brookhart raced through it...I guess Jarvis had decommitted, and chose Kent at the absolute last second. My favorite quip: Kent recruited 3 players from McKinley's '97 state championship team. A reporter told Lee Owens - "Dean Pees is bragging how he stole DeMarlo Rozier from you." Owens replied - "I think DeMarlo looked at our roster, and figured his best chance to get playing time would be at Kent." Note - Owens was 7-2 vs. Kent in his 9 years at UA. Reno Ferri once met a bunch of ZN.o members at the Barley House and gave a first hand account of all the recruits. Other coaches were there having some beers to celebrate the close of the recruiting reason. Fun times...I miss those days.1 point

I kind of like using BartTorvik because it gives you the advanced detail without having to pay. It currently lists Akron as a dog in 5 out of our last 10 games. 3 of those 5 games are near coin flip odds, which seems reasonable. https://www.barttorvik.com/team.php?team=Akron&year=2023 Personally, I'm a bit nervous for this game. Buffalo looks pretty mediocre this year, but we still haven't beat a team as good as them on the road this season. And we have struggled (albeit still winning) on the road against much worse teams. I expect a close game and hope Castaneda and Freeman are able to put this team on their back in the closing minutes to squeeze out a win.1 point

offers that early aren't really "committable," it's more of a symbolic thing1 point
-
The offers going out that early are basically so coaches have the chance to build a relationship and not miss out on a big time prospect. Players usually aren’t really “on the board” until their junior year. Some of the kids offered will not develop as expected, so the staff will no longer recruit them. A new staff is also a reason. Usually kids will need to be re-offered by a new staff as most of the former offers will not be honored.1 point

Great quote. Tracking which offers still stand is near impossible without speaking to the players themselves. To take it even further, the majority of kids getting offers in the 2025 and 2026 classes will need to be re-offered by the time they are seniors.1 point

I guess I'll post this article here. It could have gone in a number of different threads. The article talks about how Early Signing Day (December 21st) and the Transfer Portal have taken much of the luster off of the traditional Signing Day which has (always?) been on the first Wednesday of February. One enlightening quote, concerning the impact of the Transfer Portal, from former Zips RB and current Buchtel HC Bryan Williams: “You've got to tell your players, 'If you get an offer and you feel as though that that's the school where you want to be, hey, man, you've got to commit to that school because that offer may not be there.' You got it probably in December, and, in January, it may not be there because they've got a guy that they may pull from the portal. So you have to be strategic.”1 point

Is that his hair in the photo on his forehead or did he fall asleep and someone drew on it? 😊 Seriously though love seeing players like this as we head into our Big East season (still love saying that, and I'm betting recruits are more fired up about playing there than the MAC).1 point

On Post #1 I've listed OL Ben Frank as a scholarship player and Aiden Diaz and Langston Ragland as PWO's, though Langston's post is the only one which specifies him as a PWO.1 point

That block at 0:18 may be the best highlight I've ever seen! 🤣🤣🤣 That was against Barberton 😭😭 Drew Holt was a great HS OL but is definitely a walk-on at the college FBS level.1 point

The NCAA rifle national championship tourney will be held at the JAR in March. The top8 teams are invited and the Zips currently sit at #10. They have some big matches in the next few weeks that could propel them into the top 8. Rifle is coed sport and our top shooters are women. https://www.news5cleveland.com/sports/college-sports/university-of-akron/top-10-ranked-akron-zips-rifle-team-targeting-home-ncaa-rifle-championship-appearance1 point
