That's why I cheer for the MAC, excluding Kent, to do well OOC. Akron plays 18 MAC games and only 1-2 of those games the committee will look at and think that's a good win. Meanwhile, you play 16 Q3 or Q4 games and any of those that you lose will look like a black eye on your resume. Statistically if you play enough cupcake games, you will lose 1-2 of them. As was the case against Miami. Edit: Also, I'm an Akron fan, but am also a fan of college basketball as a whole. It's a lot more fun to watch Akron basketball games when the games actually matter. Based off attendance figures at games when a good Toledo or UB comes to town, it seems Joe Akron would agree.4 points

Good stuff all. I just want to see UA pop up in the bracket and look forward to March Madness. I think Groce is the guy to navigate this group through three games in Cleveland. Fun times. Hang a banner and make the dance!3 points

When you have a coach as obviously good ad JG, there has to be concern. His getting hired by someone else presents a level of complexity at his age for him and another school that you may not get with a younger coach. For the school, is a 52 year old coach what they are looking for? I don't know. He's sort of on the edge. For him, how appealing is the location of the next place? NE Ohio is a good place to live, especially at his income level. He seems like a happy guy. I also believe he has school age kids. The schools around NEOhio are very good and disrupting his kids schooling may not be something he wants to do.2 points

Some people feel the need more to be right than they care for their team to suceed. I was probably the biggest Bowden critic on this board(or at least one of them) because I felt settling for 5-7 season with a random 6-7 win season here or there wasn't what Akron should be striving for. That never stopped me from being a fan and still enjoying some of the highs, like beating Northwestern.2 points

Groce really galvanized my support for Akron Basketball! I was a student and fan during the Dambrot era but when JG got to Akron things felt different (and better) maybe that can just be chalked up to mannerisms and enthusiasm but Groce seems to 'get it.'2 points

It really is. The P5-P6 are the most protected sports programs in the world. They rarely have to leave the comfort of their own facilities and they automatically get top opponents on their schedules. Ohio State is 13-10 and ranked 72nd despite only 1 Q1/Q2 win. Their schedule props them up. James Madison is 2-1 in Q1/Q2 wins despite 7 less opportunities, and are only 9 spots ahead of the Suckeyes. Conference schedules are more important than ever before. Akron is playing 20 games this year against absolute crap. The mid majors need to figure that out and either all commit to having winning programs, or shuffle the deck to create stronger mid major conferences (i.e. A10, Mountain West, etc.)2 points

At this point if JG leaves I will have no ill will and nothing but an incredible amount of thankfulness. Will it suck? Is it possible? Both yes. Would I blame him? No. He's had chances to leave and hasn’t, Akron fits him well. The school loves him, he seems to love the school. IF he leaves, I want Ford as our next guy!2 points

I didn't really think of that possibility, but I wouldn't be against it.1 point

The OT was back and forth and could have gone either way. Nice to see us get the win.1 point

Went down big early and wound up coming back a couple times. Cool to see. Players starting to find their roles. Ball State goes down at NIU.1 point

my concern level that Groce will be gone by next season is 10 on a 1,000 point scale.1 point

All of my kidding aside, I think this would be the way to go if Groce ever left Akron. But everything in my gut says he stays put.1 point

13/23 for an impressive 56.5%! On the topic of percentages, Shammah's FG percentage on contested layups remains at 0% after the CMU game!1 point

JMU has a decent big man, TJ Bickertsaff, a Boston College transfer (Drexel before that). He's averaging 13.9 and 8.9. Besting him would be a nice show for the country.1 point
