Fair enough, but if they watch long enough, they'll get to witness a truly sublime moment in collegiate sports history: Gerry being victoriously carried off the field on the shoulders of two linemen after the Zips (1-10) escaped the "winless bowl" against Tom Lichtenberg's Ohio Bobcats (0-11)!
I agree completely. I'm really happy it wasn't McAfee, but Big Cat seems like an okay dude. As far as Barstool goes at least. He'll give us a ton of publicity. Not only now but for the foreseeable future as it really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I'm hoping this brings in a lot of excitement for the home opener and I'm strongly considering heading to the game myself with my boys. We aren't local, but I've been meaning to get them back for a game. Hopefully the casual fans around Akron are excited too.
Really hope Big Cat wins it. Could easily justify picking him if his entries are indeed astronomically more than the field. Akron needs the publicity. The accounting school should be focused on $$$ and the end goal of the drawing needs to be whatever brings in the most $$$.
In my opinion they legitimately picked the winner at random, then chose those two and 7 other random people for the "final 10."
Of course with the referral bonus one of the two bigger names could have won.
But I believe the winner will be absolutely legitimate.
First time starters Londen Sears and Francisco Tolaba have both looked good.
Brett Kaminski had nice save 3 minutes into game.
Sam Bunch and Nolan McGuire have done well at FB.
Would also be cool if Bordeaux won and they did some sort of NCAA Football video game promotion where Akron's playbook updates to whatever Bordeaux comes up with or some sort of Ultimate Team purchase of an Akron legend (Frye, JT, Dwight, Hixon, Blackburn, etc.) and partial proceeds go to the University.
I think what's getting missed by many is the referrals. Both had millions of viewers and both of their followers fit the demographic of someone who would be interested in this promotion.
Someone like Big Cat might have bought 18 tickets, which is probably the most, but he might have had several hundred people that put him down as a referral. The drawing was always going to favor influencers because of the referral piece. They have more reach than Joe from Tallmadge.
I am very disappointed that the Beacon Journal did not do a pre season article on the 12th ranked soccer zips.
Would have been nice to get some local press...and maybe put a few more fans in the seats Thursday night.
Hopefully, they send a reporter to tomorrow's game.
I enjoyed the lengthy interview with Dave Skoczen on the G6 podcast. Thank you to whoever sent it on to us. I like Dave. I think he is a big upgrade over Frenchy in calling Zip games. I have talked with him four times, twice before football games and twice before BBall games. Each time I found him to be warm, friendly, knowledgeable and excited to bring Zip games to the public. I will not crucify him for his on the spot answers to a podcaster. Rather I find his overall assessment of the team, whether football or basketball, to be realistic and objective. We are lucky to have he and Joe Dunn bringing games to us.
Thanks, @exit322. Holly s..., I go away for a few days and come back to see the football world is talking about the Zips. I'm not going to edit my typo. I'll own it. Now I need to hurry up and get my season ticket before they sell out! Move over Acme. This could be an annual promotion.
I hope so.
I was going to post here that the Dayton game is not listed as showing on ESPN+ on GoZips dot com, but as I look more closely, NONE of our games are listed as showing on ESPN+. What gives?
