I don't see why we can't compete at the MAC level. I don't see a lack of talent or lack of available talent. There will always be players transferring down to schools like Akron. The problem on the field is lack of execution, not lack of talent. And in addition, there seems to be a pretty serious coaching problem, both developmentally and in-game. I am convinced that if we found a hungry young coach who wanted to prove himself in FBS, the Zips could be successful. In terms of NIL and other resources, It's not as if many other programs are not in the same boat.4 points

This is a real measuring stick game for the Zips as it is the first game this season against a similarly situated MAC opponent. The Zips should be at a point where these games are at a minimum competitive.4 points

I would settle for a winning in-conference record and being bowl-eligible (6 or more wins). That would be a good start.2 points

Correct...no lights. I attended with an unexpected, good contingent of Zips fans...30+ I'm guessing...including an impromptu pre-game get together at Kelly's Pub a block or so away thanks to Zips alum Pat Nash. A bit disappointed with the inability to maintain possession in the 2nd half, but they found the 2nd goal, and got the shutout W on the road.2 points

Well after that dud of a guardians game I’m sure Akron zips football will salvage my Saturday!2 points

Today was disappointing, but some very interesting results around the MAC today. Either a bunch of flukes or really wide open.1 point

Should have been fired when he proposed a $280 million basketball arena, but instead the school board approved it. They have delusions of grandeur in Oxford and the next administration is going to take the hit by having to clean up the mess.1 point

What about establishing a running game and keeping the defense off the field?1 point

41-10 is embarrassing. coaches should donate their paychecks for this week1 point

To be fair to the offensive genius, we have 29 run plays and 26 passes. We're not passing "too much" except for to note that Roggow just doesn't have it today.1 point

I don't know. There must be a ton of FBS schools out there in similar straits to UA. If we were the best of those schools, we would have something to be proud of. Again, win or lose, I think most of us want to see us COMPETE! That means execute: wrapping your arms on a tackle, controlling turnovers, not committing stupid penalties, angle of pursuit, etc.1 point

You can't really compare professional sports to collegiate sports. There are mechanisms in place that at least give smaller market teams a fighting chance. Players can't even hit free agency until they're nearly pushing 30. In college sports everyone is on a 1 year deal with no draft or other forms of evenly distributing talent. EMU actually has a billionaire alumni who gifts athletics money. They're better funded than you would think. Kent is fairly comparable, but it's not like they're anything special. They're on par with Akron most years.1 point

Akron with a successful drive to take this from a three score game to a three score game.1 point

Wellllll.....it is the most compelling competition on that field today.1 point

I don't actually get this impression. I think the players are trying. They're not being coached up at all, but they are trying.1 point

That's probably a rarity. I don't know of any other examples of Joe being outcoached.1 point

He has to have an internal clock that tells him his protection will not last forever and he needs to throw the ball. What happened to our quick pass offense?1 point

It's unbelievable how bad MAC football is. Most weeks it is a game of not beating yourself as badly as the other team does.1 point

Pretty shocked we’re winning right now, but I’ll take it. stay ahead of the chains and don’t ask too much from Roggow.1 point

We should just combine these two teams into one team called the Zippewaws.1 point

If we were playing possibly any other MAC school that's east of the Mississippi, we'd already be down 20.1 point

1st and 10 from the 10 becomes 4 and 40. Central Michigan cannot even give us 3 points. This is why there are 12 people on this board.1 point

On the MAC availability report that is released an hour before the game, Poffenbarger and Broughton are both listed as out.1 point

With WVU at #23 and us having the lead at the time, it is a shame that game didn't get to play out to conclusion. That could have been a really nice road victory. And with Army and Butler both sitting at 150+, those ties feel like losses, especially given that both were at home.1 point

The senate bill passed by a filibuster proof majority and had bipartisan approval at a time Democrats and Republicans can't agree on anything. How long it drags out likely depends on if the house puts the senate bill up for a vote or tries to amend it, which would then means it has to go back to the senate for approval once again. If it's approved and signed into law by mid-November then that still would give the NCAA the power to make those players ineligible. Maybe a few get to play a few OOC games, but by in large the NCAA would still be able to ban them for the bulk of the season, particularly for the conference and postseason games, which are what really matters.1 point

I'm inclined to agree. Plus his name is already plastered all over the program from the signage, practice gym, and pretty much every press release related to the program. Getting Wentz Financial on the building doesn't do a ton more for him. He would probably just prefer another local company to step up to help him elevate the program. Naming rights to an arena in a city the size of Akron shouldn't be a hard sell, but it must be since we have no takers. What's probably holding it back is outside of men's basketball, which averages ~2,500, it's mostly just used for women's basketball and volleyball, which maybe attracts a few hundred. I know it has some one off events, but those are too far and in-between. If it had a fuller calendar it would probably become an easier sell. My guess what's holding it back from hosting more events (besides it's current state) is EJ Thomas and Akron Civic Theater book the acts that would otherwise accommodate an arena Akron's size.1 point

Let's bear in mind that the Chips are not very good. We can still win this. It's simply hard to watch.0 points
