2018 SF/PF Pete Nance of Revere
kreed5120 replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Everything that I remember and everything these article states, is that we had only 1 scholarship available that recruiting cycle and we went with Zeke Marshall. http://waitingfornextyear.com/2012/03/cantons-cj-mccollum-discusses-mac-scholarship-snubs/ http://www.ohio.com/news/top-stories/2103-nba-scouting-combine-glenoak-graduate-c-j-mccollum-hopes-to-be-a-lottery-pick-1.398905 -

Hindsight is 20/20. Unlike in football where you have 20-25 scholarships a year to give out, in basketball you have maybe 2-3. In the case of McCollum we only had 1 scholarship available and it went to this kid by the name of Zeke Marshall. Every program in the country, Lehigh included, would have taken Zeke over McCollum coming out of high school if they had to choose between the two. -
We've beaten big name mediocre P5 teams in the recent past. Can confirm Joe Akron didn't care.

2017 Commit: Nick Johns, JUCO QB, 6-4, 230

I think Akron was his only FBS offer. I wouldn't read too much into it. Even if Woodson starts next year, he will have 2 years of eligibility left and will be competing with Kato for the starting job the season after. -
I say Akron goes 8-1 at home and 14-4 overall and wins the MAC regular season title.

I'm 100% with you K92. No point in paying 2 VP $200k to do the same job 15 minutes apart. Not to mention all the other overhead. They should just split up Akron and Kent's programs and let each school keep what they are best at. Keeping overlapping classes mostly to only electives. As for the football program its challenging to cut the budget when $4M per year is committed to a football stadium that outside of a big time high school football game will never be more than half full. Other states have passed laws, Virginia I know for sure, that limit how much the schools are allowed to subsidize. Ohio should honestly look into it.

I thought that's why we signed the deal to play at Illinois. Fans here of course complained that it wasn't a home and home.

We would have played YSU in September before injuries decimated our team. A team that pounded Marshall and hung with a pretty decent App State. Akron collapsed mid season after the Woodson injury, but that wouldn't have been the Akron team YSU would have faced.

UTEP is definitely a better program than East Shore, but so are about 300 other programs. That doesn't make all 300 of those "name" programs. The average fan doesn't know or care UTEP was a beast of a program 50 years ago. Fun Fact: UTEP is the only D1 NCAA basketball team in the state of Texas to win a national championship. -

I agree. They had that 1 magical season in 1966, but have made 1 Sweet 16 appearance since 1970. In the grand scheme of things they are just another fish in a very large pond. -

If they aren't doubling Big Dog he needs to take over this game. -
Marshall has already squandered their lead. The problem with their run down the court and get a shot up as fast as you can strategy is that it is a quick way of squandering large leads as you are creating more possessions
-
Akron would still be decent sized favorites so I wouldn't say Akron would likely lose. In fact I'd say it's unlikely they would. However, the possibility of them losing to YSU is significantly greater than them losing to VMI.

It would be great if we can get a large crowd at the JAR January 3rd to witness him potentially setting the record. -

I'm kind of with you. I'm pleased with our depth at guard. It will be interesting to see what happens next year when we get a real SF in here (Eric Parish). Assuming he doesn't RS, I imagine him and Ivey would share minutes at the 3 and Josh, Antino, Noah, and Martin would split the guard minutes. Anyways getting back on point. We really need either Hughes or Aaron Jackson (preferably both) to step it up big time. We are kind of boned anytime Big Dog or Kwan get into foul trouble. Lack of depth in our frontcourt is probably our biggest achilles heel. -

Please see my edit. They tried playing Poke, but he was forced to guard a guy 6 inches taller than him who also weighed 65 lbs more than him. After about the 3rd straight back down and easy lay in they took him out. Not the kind of front court you want to play small ball against. -

It was a double header so it would include UTEP fans that bought tickets and didn't bother going for the Akron/UCI game. Edit: Poke 4 minutes was honestly too many. Can we please never have him and his 6'8 190lb frame guard a 7'2 255lb C again? -

I'm with you on the fact I feel Akron can go something like 14-4 in conference play, but can't see them going something absurd like 16-2 or 17-1. Repeating last years 13-5 mark is what I'd say is most likely and honestly IMO would be enough to win the regular season conference title again. What got me was your comments regarding our bench. The bench played a total of 51, which is over 25% of the game. -

Yeah, I mean I'm not saying CMU couldn't out shoot us for a game. What I'm saying is they aren't really a good defensive team and are a very poor rebounding team. I just don't think they can find other ways to win when they are having an off shooting night, which they will be vulnerable to when their studs in their 100th minute of a back-to-back-to-back. Not to mention them wanting to run an uptempo style of offense while other teams try to bully them with their size will wear them down faster. -

WMU has a really small frontcourt. Their PF/C starting combo come in at 6'6 and 6'8. They also ask Rayson and Keene to play pretty much every minute of every game (They are both averaging 35 mpg. Take out the D2 opponent game and they are averaging more like 37-38). They are both undersized themselves each coming in at 5'9. They aren't a team built to win 3 games in 3 days. -

We are -12 in rebounding differential. If that was closer to even, we'd be up by at least 15 -

Zips up 2 at the half. Williams has 12 at the half. -

Turnovers have been a problem for us all year.
