Zips Football "Recruiting"Camps

@Keener....we can't even get you to call it UA instead of AU. -
Am I the only one interested in the only senior class with 90 wins not coached by Dambrodt? Which coach? Also does KD have a vote in the USA Today Coach's Poll? Where does he put Akron? I kind of wish he'd put Akron no. 1 just to see what kind of shit storm he could stir up.

I don't know if any of you have been watching Anger Management but my wife and I really like it. James Black plays an over the top incarcerated homosexual in a group session Charlie Sheen runs in prison. Quite a different role for him. His boyfriend is played by Theo Huxtable from the Cosby Show. The part he plays reminds me of the two guys David Allen Grier and the Wayans brother who reviewed movies on In Living Color.

We're on this board talking about Top 25 if the team can go undefeated the rest of the way. Doesn't this point to a bigger problem? We are never going to become a high mid-major program playing in the MAC. I wish GT and/or Elton would interview the John Steinbrecker or Ricky Stokes and ask them what they think about having a team with the longest winning streak in the country/undefeated in Conference play and still not ranked. Ask them what are you doing to up the play of the conference? What do this guys do all day long to earn their money (not GT or Elton) but the guys in the MAC office.

To be fair to this entire conversation Akron has been a better "team" over the last 8 years (as noted 8 consecutive 20 plus winning seasons) and 6 consecutive championships. Over that 8 year span Akron is 10-8 against OU and the overall record between the two teams is 31-35 in favor of OU. Where OU has the real edge and rightfully can talk smack is they are 2-0 against us in MAC Championships, but we've been to 6 consecutive while OU has only played in those two championship games. The real kicker being their run last year. Overall Akron has been the Flagship of the MAC the last 8 years but OU has the national recognition we covet. As hard as it is to say I loved watching OU in last year's tournament because every mid-major team that takes down a big school is a win for all of us. I hate nothing more than watching 7 BigTen and 7 ACC schools in the tournament while teams like Akron go to the NIT. I'll give OU props for their run last year but the Flagship moniker belongs to Akron.

Chauncey Was Out - Now Back, and Kicking @ss
Big Zip replied to zipinnc's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I watched the game last night via the stream so it may be misleading but I thought Chauncey looked like he was getting around well. It was nice to see him back on the court. I'm hoping this week provides him an opportunity to get back into the flow and get comfortable. His stats aren't always visible in the box score but I think his leadership on the court and communication when he is out there is valuable. -
Bracketbusters: UA / NDST - Ohio / Belmont
Big Zip replied to PB1719's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
DIG I think this bracketbuster game matters every year but KD has never treated it that way and I've complained about it every year. I know he understands but I I still suspect we'll here something this week that downplays the game to some extent. It is just how he talks about this game every year. -

NDSU's leading scorer Taylor Braun has been out for the last nine games and it's doubtful he'll be back Friday night. The team is 5-4 since his injury. Today the beat IUPI 75-39 to hand them their 12th straight loss. Coincidentally one of IUPUI's last wins was against Ball State. Zips need to drop NDSU by 20+ and make a statement. I don't want to hear anything from Dambrodt about how this game doesn't matter because all that matters is the MAC Tournament Championship game. His attitude impacts the team and I want him to want this Nationally Televised game as much as any other game this season. -
I'm looking forward to the bracketbuster. Hoping the Zips come out amped up and make a statement on national television. Looking forward to a sell-out or near sell-out crowd to bring the noise! This is the kind of game that can turn some heads but it has to be a dominate performance.

Absolutely brutal shooting. Guys not getting close enough to hoop on the inside and the outside guys are just bad.
-
George Thomas said it looks like a sell out and they crowd is salty with the refs.

This is great article. I really enjoy reading articles in the ABJ that have information that hasn't already been shared on this site. I had no idea what had been going on relative to marketing for this team. I thought Brian Walsh had a refreshing attitude too...I don't have anything else to do besides basketball and school. It is a shame that Div. 1 athletes have to inform their fellow students they are Div. 1 and attendance is free. I just don't understand how you go to school and don't know these things. Even if you were raised an OSU fan your college is on a 16 game winning streak. I used to love going to games when I was on campus and I was in school during the Coleman Crawford era. I remember how people filled the place up the night Gary Trent came to town (The Shaq of the MAC). Didn't even matter that we weren't very good. The interesting thing about the soccer comparison is yes the soccer team makes the tournament ever year and won a national championship but it is still soccer. Is it the fact that Caleb openly coveted the student attendance while Keith openly ridicules the lack of support. I have to believe Keith's engagement with the fan base or lack thereof has an impact. Wasn't Caleb always buying Pizza? What about the fact that only "x" number of students can be close to the court? In soccer all of the student could be behind the net and Caleb made the effort to go to talk to them after the game. Did he even lead the "I Believe" cheer? I get it you're a Div. 1 basketball coach making $600K this probably seems demeaning and traditionally you don't have to do this in that role but this is Akron maybe that is exactly what you need to do. The question becomes why not follow Caleb's lead on this instead of being envious. Perhaps Caleb found the formula and Keith is just ignoring it.

Such an interesting list. We are ahead of a team he thumped us and we are behind a team we beat.
-
Why can't Harney be that guy that slashes to the hoop? Harney has the skills to drive the lane but would he pass?
-
This game is not looking good. Our ability to give this game away is amazing.
-
Betancourt is playing terrible. Teams are playing us hard down low and making it difficult to get passes inside. Additionally, our passes around the edge are lazy and ripe for being picked. Akron is so much better than this team they should be up by 20.
-
These terrible passes and unforced errors are killing these guys.

I'm glad so many folks on here are positive because I'm struggling to find my positive for this game. The poor performance at home and on the road the last few games makes me wonder where this team's collective heads are at. The team we saw play OU looked like a team that could make a run in the NCAA tournament the team that has played the last few games looks like a team that can lose the first round of the MAC tourney. I will be hoping for solid performance from our guys tonight and win but the back of my head is terribly concerned this team is ripe for a loss to a team they should easily beat.

Love to hear Tree is doing well in school. I really hope he and Harney graduate getting their extra year back.

@ Miami (OH) Saturday 1pm
Big Zip replied to MontrealExposloveZippy's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I know the game is still early but quite frankly maybe this team just doesn't deserve the recognition they are seeking. I'm simply amazed how a team that is so talented can play like they did against OU and then suck so bad against these other weaker teams. These guys need to look inward - they obviously aren't as good as they seem to think they are. They are reading the press clippings and thing they are that good. It feels like these guys think they can just show up and the other team should just let them win. Where is the heart? Where is the passion? I will not be surprised if this team loses in the MAC Tournament and goes out in the first round of the NIT. They simply don't know how to be good. -
Interview with Keith earlier today on 92.3. http://cleveland.cbslocal.com/2013/02/07/a...ips-win-streak/
-
How soon until Keith tells us this game isn't a big deal and doesn't really matter if we win because we need to win the MAC tournament? As for the UMKC Roos we should really add them to the schedule to start the season every year. Kangaroo versus Kangaroo.

He's a smallish quarterback at 6'0" but loved that he started all four years at Tallmadge. I hope he's a kid who gets a chance to red shirt this first year and can work his way onto the team through special teams. I have to say I can't imaging him playing QB at Div. 1 -- seems like he is better suited to play safety just from size and speed (apparently between 4.6 and 4.8).
-
Toledo picked up Kareem Hunt from Willoughby South. I think the kid is going to dominate the MAC and hate that he is going to team in the conference. This is a nice piece on three area kids signing with Toledo. http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2013/0...s/nh6520370.txt Sounds like Matt Campbell is making an early impact in Toledo. He was in the running when we hired TB right?
