This really comes down to recruiting. KD recruited role players. Get a big man, regardless of actual ability (Zeke, Hughes). Not that Zeke was not a great player, but he was a rim defender. Not too much offense, considering he was 7 feet tall. Tree was the inside offense in those days. Big wings who were three point shooters (Reggie and Jake). But not much inside play. Role players. Groce seems more likely to recruit ATHLETES. That makes a big difference in a tournament. When George Young was the GM of the NY Giants, his philosophy was always to draft the best athlete available. LAWRENCE TAYLOR was the best athlete available. The rest is history. IF Groce can bring in some good athletes, the rest will take care of itself.

The BIGGGGG question is not whether he can coach, it is going to be the roster. He needs to replace Big Dog, Kwan, Antino and maybe some others.

And the interesting part of that is this: TDM is a SHRIMP. He could not hold his own in the MAC. He will not be a real contributor in a real conference.

Actually, search firms are often used as "cover". That is to say, it may be a lawsuit or NCAA violation if UA initiates contact with a coach currently under contract. Hiring a good coach may turn into a real challenge. The chances of even a .500 season are looking very grim. It is a little late to start recruiting HS players. It appears we are losing at least 3 starters (BD, Kwan and Tino) and a bunch of recruits. Where do we go from here? Unless we find a coach that can bring half his team with him. No one really wants to jump straight into failure.

Tino has to sit out a year.
