Good interview, here are the notes: KD: Despite ups and downs all season, the team constantly shows its resilience. KD: We have so much conference tournament experience. And the team feels it can win under any circumstance. KD: Zeke has a long way to go....sees big improvements though. He needs to learn to stay out of foul trouble...other players are "jumping into" him. Aaron: Western Michigan plays with an attitude, big chip on their shoulder. KD: We "pounded Western this year" KD: Keys vs. WM will be how our "big guys" do against them and defending their best players. KD: no worries about fatigue. Feels we do more post game practice than any other team. Aaron: What's the secret to Akron's success every year? KD: No secret. It's our depth, and character. There are no big stars, it's a good team effort. Rizzo: Does your proximity to Quicken Arena give you and Can't a big home advantage? KD: AKRON AND K-ENT HAVE THE ADVANTAGE BECAUSE BOTH TEAMS ARE BETTER THAN ALLTHE OTHER TEAMS. KD: The MAC tournament is one of the best in the nation. After 25 years with the conference, the current state of the MAC tourny is the biggest improvement. Rizzo: You used to play in Kobo Arena? KD: Yes, in Detroit. Rizzo: My God, that place is a cave...a rats nest. KD: The Q is the perfect facility for the MAC, lucky to have it available. KD: Props to Western. For tonight, we need to score in transition and play D. We have a great familiarity with them. It's going to be to our advantage. Rizzo: Can't fans always text him and complain when he interviews Dambrot! -END TRANSMISSION-

Should be interesting. Aaron Goldhammer is going to question coach about putting Nik in a position to foul out so early in the second half. p.s. Rizzo in extreme pain after Bobcats lost last night!

Listen to WKNR's broadcast online here: http://espn.go.com/espnradio/player?rd=1#/...callsign=WWGKAM Mark "Munch" Bishop and Aaron Goldhammer calling the game. Should be fun (as soon as they stop talking about Doug Penno!) ugh!!! Now they're rehearsing how to properly pronounce "Cvetinovic" lol. GO ZIPS

+1 I think there was a lot of excitement during the early KD/Romeo/Dru years that we were laying a foundation & building a program that would be recognized on a national level. However, since Rome & Dru graduated we've pretty much been treading water. We really haven't taken the program to the "next level," however one may define that. Additionally, our gameday experience is total crap. As much as I hate to say it, UA needs to go to a Cavs game to learn about creating an atmosphere. Someone previously noted that what's lacking is an attention to details. There are a million small things wrong w/ the gameday experience. It's almost impossible to define, but from top-to-bottom, from A-to-Z, from beginning-to-end, UA athletics simply emit a bush-league vibe. ^ agreed you are so right about that.
-
Dave I agree with you in every area. The team SHOULD be getting more support. But blaming students and people who do not attend gets us nowhere, even though they deserve blame lol. The only answer is for the U to be more proactive. They must take more steps to get people to the games, to make the games seem more like a special event. They can do this by improving the fan experience. It's bad right now. And several have brought up good points that even with the vast limitations of the arena, something must be done about seating arrangements and bringing back someone like that crazy Willy guy that got everyone amped up. Those are just two no brainer ideas of several that are needed. I blame the JAR experience. Dave.... Well put. There are many things that influence the student attendance, but the bottom line is that they are not doing the job in supporting a program that is at the top of the conference year in, year out. We have all heard that the structure of the JAR needs overhauled and I agree with that. Also the seating policy for students in the lower bowl needs reviewed. But those cannot be accepted as excuses. We have to solve this because, selflessly, I dream of getting out of the MAC. A Gonzga-type program and a conference winning football team will help us get there. But, good post Dave.

Hi Dave. I think the overall fan experience at the JAR is very low. But more directly to the current discussion, the seating layout to me seems to kill any sort of fan/student continuity. Now maybe I'm not doing a good job of describing it....but the way fans on each level are segregated by the track, along with the fact that younger fans are sent to the rafters....to me it's just not conducive to fostering an exciting, energetic crowd. Remembering back as a student, it was so frustrating to have the upper stands trying to make all kinds of noise, only to look down at the quiet, comatose bodies filling every other blue seat. Admittedly many students at the U are apathetic. But if we had a better facility (not necessarily larger) with a better seating layout, I'm sure we will have more students enjoying the atmosphere and making a habit of attending games. p.s. agree with you that the facility is not a good excuse for students to ignore our streaking team.
-
I mostly blame the JAR.

Z.I.P. thanks for sunscreen, coconuts, surfing and the new Hawaii Five-0. Ha ha....lets hook up soon buddy!! Scott and Vince aka no na nalu p.s. do you know who George Fernandez is????

Exactly!! It's a known fact that all of the good or original team names have already been taken by the hundreds of pre-existing teams. The MLS has finally realized this and are ditching stupid names like "Kansas City Wiz." Heritage names like Whitecaps, Cosmos and Sounders on the other hand, are awesome. Summit Assault? That's an arena football team. Akron Metro Football sounds terrific in comparison.
-
Saying all JUCO players play there "for one reason" just sounds ridiculous. Unless I'm missing something. There's only one reason. Tell that too Cam Newton. You guys don't know what you are talking about. There are a lot of good players playing JUCO for a lot of reasons. Not all are D1 talent, but a lot are. I beg to differ. I do know what I am talking about. I agree there are a lot of good players that play JUCO ball, but they all play JUCO ball for one reason.

Well, we've come a long long long long way since the optimism of facing the Zags in the NCAA's. Just wow.
-
atdhe.net was mostly worthwhile in that it linked you to games on sites like Justin.tv. Most of atdhe.net links have been dead or virus pits for months. No big loss. This cat and mouse game will go on forever. p.s. Long live wikileaks!!!!

Whoa...Summit Assault.... I am not digging that name.

Creation of a Supporters' Group
scottditzen replied to RootforRoo44's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I'm a hardcore fan and I like ROOligans. Well don't worry, it's still in the chase. And we have weeded out the ones that no one is crazy about and narrowed it to five names. I'm going to do an official poll really soon. And that will decide it...period! lol Well, since it's obvious not everyone is going to agree with/like/tolerate the name, you might as well come up with something that everyone hates!!!! -
All right, this trip is officially a no brainer....just need to find a designated driver somehow..... http://www.brewingnews.com/webpdfs/GLBN/GLBN_Michigan.pdf

Bells Brewing alone is reason enough to make this in-conference road trip!!! Also, the beaches around that part of Lake Michigan are absolutely beautiful, and remind me a bit of the NC Outer Banks. http://www.frankfort-michigan.com/images/beach.jpg
