Got a chance to catch a couple of hours of practice today. The coaching staff was working off a list of about 30 drills. The pace was fast as they moved from one drill to the other. Each drill was a series of short bursts of high energy techniques. They worked on various plays but most of the time, the emphasis was on defense. As each drill was called out, the players either let out a groan or some other acknowledgment as to how they viewed that particular drill. The one that stood out was a drill called "West High". When that one was called everyone started hooping and hollering with anticipation. It was 5 on 5, half court, anything goes. No fouls called, no out of bounds. Think Rugby scrum. The team with the ball had to score how ever many points the coaches dictated and the defenders did what ever they had to preventing them from scoring. Every loose ball resulted in a pile of players scrapping. On one loose ball, Tree came barreling at the scorers table where we were seated and he was carrying Abreau on his back, who had both arms wrapped around him trying to stop him. It was 5 minutes of pure mayhem, but it was fun! Barberton HS BB coach Ken Rector was there observing and I asked him if he was going to run that drill with his team.LoL
