Replace Porter! Replace Porter!
bobbyake replied to fknbuflobo's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
for those that are less optimistic, UNC won the 2011 National Championship with a 1st year head coach, who was also the former assistant coach at UNC. I'm very optimistic for a Jared Embick era. -
is the game UNC vs WVU game streaming as well?

Because the 15k avg attendance requirement was miraculously met last year, Akron can report actual attendance this year because they won't have to meet that requirement again until next year. 12k seems about right for butts in seats

2012 Zips Tailgating Beer List
bobbyake replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
If you guys count soccer tailgates , I had the following for the Florida Gulf Coast tailgate: Southern Tier Pumking, 1x 64 ounce growler (drank half, shared half), 2 x 22 ounce bottles Hoppin Frog's Hollow Double Pumpkin Ale. 1x 22 ounce bottle Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout, 1x 22 ounce bottle I was drunk and my soccer jersey has beer stains all over it now. -
will the casual fans come out or stay at home to watch a Browns pre-season game?

Replace Porter! Replace Porter!
bobbyake replied to fknbuflobo's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Porter was loyal to his former Zips players when it came down to picking players for the US u23 team. I wouldn't be surprised if Portland acquires a few more former Akron players in the MLS. If Porter uses one of Portland's draft picks on an Akron player, it could be a recruiting tool for Akron. "Hey, come to Akron where you'll have a better shot at making it into the MLS (Portland)." -

Replace Porter! Replace Porter!
bobbyake replied to fknbuflobo's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
This info is from 2004, but it has him at $56,650 -
I'll start with this We may need another thread for this. Time for a Sep 14 vs St. Johns Tailgate thread?
-
One of our tailgates should be a Porter theme which we only drink porter style beers.

Stadium Expansion for 2012
bobbyake replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
It was a sad attempt at increasing reserved seating when the stadium needs more seating for casual fans. I have a video showing how empty that section has been and a few pictures I can post later today. I think we talked about it some in another thread. -
Stadium Expansion for 2012

With the money Akron receives from Porter's buyout, it would be nice to see the main grandstand expanded. -
Replace Porter! Replace Porter!
bobbyake replied to fknbuflobo's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
as far as salary information goes, at 350,000 a year, Caleb Porter was/is the highest paid college coach that I know of. Elmar Bolowich, Creighton's current head coach, made $91,052 a year when he left UNC in 2011. More info on salaries of NC coaches. UCONN's coach, Ray Reid, is at 133,000 UVA's coach, Gelnovatch, makes $74,700 a year. Clemson's coach, Noonan, makes $250,000 a year. more at big soccer http://www.bigsoccer.com/community/threads...oaches.1273434/ -
Not exactly correct: On Portland's website: “I am truly excited and honored to be provided this unique opportunity to coach the Portland Timbers, an organization that in a short-time has established itself as a model franchise in Major League Soccer,” said Porter. “I know that Merritt and Gavin are committed to long-term success for the Timbers and come December, I will be completely focused and driven to continue building a professional club in which the Timbers supporters, city and organization will be proud of. In the meantime, out of respect to the Akron program, I will not be commenting further on this matter until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season.” On GoZips: "I always believed that it would take a truly special situation for me to leave Akron, and the Portland Timbers position is that type of opportunity," said Porter. "Given how invested I have been in the Akron program and community for the past seven years, this has been an extremely difficult decision. However, after many conversations with my family and close advisors and, given my long-term aspirations, I feel this is the right time and place for me to take the next step in my coaching career. "In making this announcement, everyone should know that my role with Akron during this college season will not change, nor will my commitment to the players, alumni and supporters. I am extremely proud to continue coaching my team through the fall and the Akron soccer program will have my undivided focus for what I hope will be another championship year. Out of respect to my players and this program, I will not be commenting further about this situation until after the conclusion of the 2012 college season."

Marla Ridenour @MRidenourABJ Caleb Porter confirms he's staying through end of Zips season. "That's what's fair for the players," he said as he left team meeting. George Thomas @GeorgeThomasABJ No comment from Caleb Porter. He wants to concentrate on the season. #gozips https://twitter.com/#!/search/caleb%20porter

When Lolla left, Akron tried extending his contract and matched Louisville's offer. I can't remember if he took a couple recruits with him as well. Here's the Lolla thread: http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?sh...t=0&start=0

Just a reminder that we've been here before. There are other threads worth digging up if you need some optimism that the next coach can carry the torch.
