Enough of being Mr. Nice Guy, sue the (NCAA) bastards! 😡

In a QB the winning foundation has to be there. In Bullock I don't see it. With him decision making and accuracy are lost. He has had a spring season (I think), off-season, pre-season and a full season to show progress. It hasn't been there. If Joe is counting on him we are building a house of cards that will collapse under pressure. A new QB or two must be brought in. I am most curious to find out why there is zero mention of Steele Wasel 6'3" 215. His signing was heralded and supposedly we beat out Oregon so he must have had some ability. Why has he seemingly fallen off the radar? Even when we were desperate for a win he was not discussed as an option. Did the staff find he was way below expectations?

Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season

I would renew the series with YSU for the opening game each year. I would also only do it if YSU accepted a 2 for 1 contract ( 2 at UA for 1 at YSU). I don't think YSU would accept that, but those are the conditions under which I would play them. -
I watched the Crew playoff game at a microbrewery outside Columbus with a friend whose daughter plays for OP (Ohio Premier). OP is the best club side in central Ohio for women. They are one of five Ohio clubs that play in the ECNL (Elite Club National League). She said Jen has signed four girls off of this season's OP team. In her opinion they are better than the talent UA has signed in the past. She also said Vakos is the real deal and undoubtedly the best GK in Ohio. Jen could be on the cusp of turning this around.

Brilliant review Catdaddy. I always appreciate your perspective. There are two points I'd like to offer a different view. I feel you were optimistic with the OL review. I do not feel we have depth or quality. We keep hoping that with time the young players will get better. That has been a mantra with the OL for the last 10 years. They are what they are, and that's not very good. We have discipline issues that showed in the first game and repeated in every game of the season to the end. An example: everyone knows Gaithings mouth is a ticking time bomb. Yet the coaches have been ineffective in addressing it. That tells me the coaches either tolerate it or don't consider it an issue. Regardless, the season is mercilessly done. Joe talks about the path Miami took to return to respectability. I hope we follow it, but, frankly, I expect better. Coaching matters. They have to do a better job. I continue to hope they will.

I can't resist commenting on this game, the last of our Titanic-like cruise of a season. The field looked great on TV Play calling continued to be poor. Solution: give the damn ball to Lingard, brilliant on my part seeing that we have no QB and no one else has ever pushed that idea 🙄 Joe got out-coached Last season we got a glimpse of Joe's creative offense. I couldn't wait to see what he would do with better talent. It came and the offense exited the building This team has no discipline. The coaches seem to tolerate it so it has continued to the very end. Never corrected. We have become very good at finding a way to lose. Considering our QB's we are now in a worse position going into next season than we were going into this season. Instead of getting the QB room better it has gotten worse. The scheduling of OSU seems to be a short term act of desperation to get some money. Unfortunately it does not appear to be consistent with long term goals of building a program. Winning builds a program.

Akron to play Ohio State to open the 2024 season

I talked with one of Guthrie's asst AD's. He said Guthrie planned to tell UK they could buy us out at the full guarantee or more. He would then look to fill the date with a bottom feeding P5 team that presents a chance to win. We would go there for a decent payout. What changed? My guess is that the lack of any attendance put the program way under budget and they had to make up some revenue so they took the OSU offer. It sucks to lose when we all thought this would be a .500 team, or better. Whether we like it or not (I don't) the OSU guarantee allows us to give Joe the budget he wants. He's just not delivering so far. Next year brings hope. -
I bet Billy Turner is also on that list. He was incredible, but Freeman may be better.

You raise a good point. The renovation of Crouse Hall is very supportive of the students having the best learning environment they can. It looks great. Still I have a continued criticism of our buildings. That is they have no common architecture. From design to materials there are too many buildings that do not reflect a common vision. When Ted Curtis was our architect working under President Luis Proenza we started to get some commonality in new buildings with a modern brick, glass and metal theme. Buildings ad renovations after his time are different. Crouse is the perfect example. It would be nice to have a style that reflects our campus. This renovation was much needed.

Unfortunately this arena is still better than what we have in the JAR. Please contribute $60 M so we can have an arena deserving of this program.

He would be welcomed back, but I hope he is ready to go to class and actually study.

This makes sense. Moorhead has been an offensive guru in the past and as recent as last season. This season seems to be a big disconnect from past play calling. That is especially true regarding how they use, or better yet, don't use Lingard. Possibly the best back in the MAC.

GP, I saw in your recent post you listened to the Zips broadcast on XM. I have Sirius XM and I would like to know how to pick up Zip radio broadcasts. Thanks and enjoy Washington state.

This program is in good hands. The change in leadership was needed and will pay off.

Thanks Z-Claws. I'm glad the sky is not falling. 😁 I would go with my best against OSU too. Competing against OU a day later is a good opportunity to build depth. I am very proud of how good our lady S & D team has been over the years. They are the best women's program on campus year in year out.

Big East Quarterfinal @ Xavier, 11-4-2023 7pm

I've got to agree with you that the Zip boosters have not gotten better as the season progressed. It cannot all be blamed on the loss of Malik and Dyson. We have too much talent to be performing like this. Perhaps there is another run left in them if they get in the playoffs, but if they don't make it I won't be surprised. I hope they get in and a fire is lit in the team. -
I don't know much about the quality of this season's edition of our S & D team, but this is a shocker. No one in the MAC has been able to hang with our ladies in the past. I have no idea of how this happened. Can anyone else out there shed some light?
-
I did not attend even tho' I am a season ticket holder. I was so mad at this team for destroying (so I thought) my love for Zip football. Living two hours away I watched with hope, then dread, then more hope, then pure elation. This team, that I was disgusted with, brought me back. Winning the "Wheel" is huge. For us now, it is everything. Don't believe the rivalry is dead and no one cares. There was even a segment on our victory tonight on TV in Columbus. This is our "Wheel" and we are not going to give it back for a long time. Thank you to the boys for believing when I had lost the faith. Thanks to Joe and staff. Joe is still the guy to fix it and he will.

No need to apologize for spreading the truth. The loss of Mitchell was huge to the program. He did more with less than any other coach at UA. He was especially wired in to knowledgeable ex-athletes who made great specialty assistant coaches. He had Akron consistently regarded as one of the top northern programs in the USA breaking the top 25 in both men's and women's programs. I hope the new director of can get us back to that level, but I've seen little to inspire confidence.

For Jared to respond like this is unusual. He knows there are idiots out there who will use any medium available to prove they are idiots. Jared wants to win more than any of us. He is doing all he can to make that happen. Many schools, even in the BE, play for a tie. Coaches want to keep their jobs and if they can park the bus in front of their goal for 90 minutes they can tell their AD and fans that they tied mighty Akron. If I had responded to this person I would have ended with an F U. That's why I'm not the coach. He has more class and we are lucky to have him.

I don't like getting into arguments, philosophical or heated, with fellow posters on this board. But I will comment on your question. JM should be doing better with the players he has. I have specifically stated that in other posts noting he has raised the talent level and underperformed with it. But his situation deserves more introspection. Unlike the other coach in question he has won at the highest level in college sports, the SEC. He has also won at the FCS level. Also he has exceptional experience at the highest level... Penn St, Oregon, Miss St. So I expect him to use that experience and past performance to put a competitive product on the field. For that he is accountable. Turning around the worst football program in the country vs turning around a poor soccer program is not apples to apples in comparison. 11 top players change an entire team in soccer. 11 top players is a good start in football but it is not going to make a winning program. I think we can both agree Joe must to do better.

I see little to inspire confidence in the women's program. Neither the coaching nor the recruiting is up to MAC standards. That is not a high bar to hit. The MAC is not considered a quality conference to send players to. The ECNL coaches do not steer their players there. The coaching especially bothers me. I don't buy into the excuse that the staff does not have their own players so losses are expected. If that is the case why coach? Coaching entails taking what you have and formulating a style and strategy that maximizes the existing players' ability. You put aside what you as a coach prefer until you have the essentials to make it happen. Meanwhile you maximize what you have. This doesn't guarantee wins, but it does build confidence in the players, and fans, that better times are ahead. Unfortunately I see no confidence building in this program. Perhaps another year changes that.

his is such a cool post. I love this president. But let's not get too down on Gary Miller. He gets how important it is to beat your rival. Maybe not as engaging as this president, but he is all in. This week he is carrying a Zip football helmet wherever he goes just to remind everyone that we need to beat Kent. The coaches have also heard from him that beating Kent is a priority. That's a good start and I give him credit.

I'll take a different view. That is in the final third Ashton seemed lost. He repeatedly passed inside, broke around the defender and got a pass back. Rather than cross or shoot he passed again. By then the D was crowded between him and the goal. I'd rather see him take a shot any time he in or near the box. He has a wicked left foot that can hit a rocket and keep it low, not overshooting the frame. Let him do more of that. Most won't find the net, but there are rebounds, misdirections and weird bounces that happen in the box.
