Keeping up with the Three D's (Dambrot, Dru & Duquesne)
72 Roo replied to dirtyolcrowe's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You don't know Zip basketball history. This statement is a joke. You are overlooking the impact Tony Laterza, Wyatt Webb and Bob Huggins had while at Akron. What they did for the program was equal to or better than the improvement KD brought. -
And I'm still on my hunger strike to bring awareness of this injustice to the public. BTW I've added Brussel sprouts to the food I am denying myself. I pray an announcement comes soon. I am being draw to a light.

Something has got to be done about this. Therefore I've decided the only thing to do to bring attention is to go on a hunger strike. I will be giving up kale, tofu, carrot juice, caviar and liver. This is drastic, but it's got to be done. While I will have doctors monitoring my health there is no guarantee how long I'll last. This could be my last post unless an announcement comes soon. I leave all my smart-ass comments to Zipmeister. Farewell!

Honestly, I don't see what Liberty sees in him if it is true he got a scholly. Best of luck to him and i hope he proves me wrong. Have a great career Xavior.

So much for loyalty to the program that showcased him.

I assume what you know is good for us. I am excited to learn what you know soon. This seems to be a great off-season for Zip sports with the strong roster men's BBall is putting together, the rebuild of our women's team, the continued growth in signing better talent for football and the recruits/transfers men's soccer has coming in. We could be on the verge of a fantastic year for most Zip sports. This has been one of the most active off-seasons I have ever witnessed.

We also had a glimmer of hope when Bowden took the Zips to Boise and beat Utah State for the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. That was a sweet game and we had hope, which went to the gutter until Joe arrived.

The support of Giving Day has been remarkable and the totals are not yet complete. One thing that stands out to me is that the two programs that have built the strongest culture, men's soccer and women's swimming and diving, are the two that have done the best. You would think that football, with over 100 athletes in the program each year, would have had far more donors and donations than any other program. Obviously that is not the case. It makes me wonder how grateful they are to have been a student athlete at UA. In life it's not what you get, but what you give back.

If Paige is a shorter version of Jacy Sheldon that is good enough for me. I watched Jacy play many times before and after her injury. She is fantastic. Paige is welcome here. Please use your influence and help coach Gensler to bring her to Akron.

I'd welcome him back if he bought into our intense Zeefence, shared the ball, upped his physical play and was not a cancer in the locker room. We have something incredible coming next year.

I would love to know what are the factors that kept Reagan Bass here. In my opinion we have improved our coach, we are close to her home, there is great potential here and we have high aspirations. But those are my thoughts, not hers. Does anyone have insight as to what made her stay?

If Guthrie can do for women's basketball what it appears he has done for softball he can puff his chest out all the way to Howland.

It is nothing short of thrilling to see a pathetic Zip program turn around and not only compete, but to thrive. Leadership/coaching is everything in college sports. All the more reason not to accept mediocrity in our sports. Congrats ladies!

Basketball practice facility (and more) coming
72 Roo replied to jupitertoo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I appreciate your reasoning, but I disagree. I would rather have a facility that gave you the flexibility for growth than one that, in its very size, makes a statement about how big you intend to build your program. The Stroth Center may be good for BG, but not us. I would love a facility that seated 8,000 with the architectural design for expansion if needed 20 years from now. A good architect could do that w/o creating deadspace in the building. -

Reminds me of a nicer BG Stroth center. Both magnificent high school gyms. 😉 -
I have no problem with Murphy and Gray finding new homes, even if they got scholies. We know they didn't give us what we needed. We all saw their play and it wasn't going to work out here. So congratulations to them. They move on and so do we. There is no issue here.

Way-Too-Early MAC Predictions: 2023-2024
72 Roo replied to LoyalZIP's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Agreed. Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. The sky is not falling and we have a lot to offer Groce. Will he go. Yes, I believe so. But I am not sure it will be after next season so why worry about what we can't control. Rather let's make this program a better version of what it is now. Make it damn hard for him to leave. When he does we will thank him for all he has done and welcome in a very good coach to replace him. Good coaches will want to be here. -
Nice pic! Thanks for sharing.

The grass is a different color in front of the goals because that area was covered with a tarp to keep it dry. W/o receiving sunlight the grass was not the same color as the area that had no cover.

This only shows that Houston did not do their homework. God bless him if he can earn PT there.
-
B & G, you have laid out a team poised to win again. Thanks. I disagree that Tribble should be a starter. His offense (no outside shot, TO's when he goes into the lane against better teams) limits what he gives us against the best of the MAC during the season and in the tournament. I would rather see us invest in Nate, Prather or Marvin even Darrion during the year as we prepare for the tournament. There will be a lot of angst during that time with many learning opportunities for these younger players, but the upside is worth it. Greg can come off the bench giving us leadership, defense and energy. Change is needed to play with the best.
-
Brilliant analysis ME102! I feel smarter just reading your work. There are some good candidates out there. One of them will make a good coach for us and do what MJ couldn't.
-
I agree with ol'Zippy. Tavari has a far greater upside. Garvin can play the point, but has little offense. He hesitates on his 3 pointers. When he goes in the paint he clearly demonstrates why he has earned the rep as the most blocked guard in the MAC. Sometimes he works magic in the lane, but not often enough to overcome his blocks and TO's. I'd rather give the PT to Tavari altho' I don't see him as our starting PG. Hope Groce can mine the TP.

I'd respect Groce's decision if he wanted Ali back. That being said if John called to make the decision I'd say good luck somewhere else. Not because he left, but because he is soft on defense, rebounding and character.
