  1. Source. • Pitt quarterback Chad Voytik got a firsthand look at how future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning operates. • The Biletnikoff Award, released its annual watch list Wednesday. Pitt’s Tyler Boyd was not on it. • Pitt running back James Conner was named to the watch list for the Doak Walker Award.
  2. Not the distinction I would use. Whatever your opinion, Roo's post does not read like either to me.
  3. Now he is his own boss. What local writer around here could do this???? It remains to be seen whether Kovacevic has started a trend. Among sportswriters launching their own sites are: Gary Shelton, formerly of the Tampa Bay Times, and Dave Elfin who covers the sports beat in Washington D.C. Kovacevic said he has fielded numerous calls from sports columnists and reporters who are interesting in starting a site. He passes along the following advice. “In order to do this, you have to be old enough to have the trust of the community,” Kovacevic said. “And you have to be young enough to see what the next waves are [in media].”
  4. Another good story. I don't know if Devon wrote his speech for his Espy last night, but he did a nice job delivering it. I didn't realize LeBron and Devon were close until last night. Red Carpet photos for those who enjoy that kind of stuff.
  5. If you ran an Akron paper, would you print that "story?"
  6. Jatavis not only on Pitt's watch list this year, he is on the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List as well. Jatavis Brown (Belle Glade, Fla.) has been named to the Watch List for the 2015 Rotary Lombardi Award, the Houston Sports Authority announced on Tuesday. The Rotary Lombardi Watch List contains 146 delegates and will be periodically updated and revised through the conclusion of the voting to determine the 12 semifinalists for 2015. Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, either on offense or defense, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.
  7. The Brand Guide Over the summer, Zips Athletics will work to begin the process of transitioning its brand from the "Head A" logo to the "Z," including the refreshing of GoZips.com, which launched on July 15. The revamping stems from the department's IMPACT 2020 strategic plan, which launched in December 2013. IMPACT 2020 is a comprehensive seven-year plan developed with significant input from those impacted by Zips Athletics. One of the goals of IMPACT 2020 is to strengthen the identity and position of Zips Athletics by enhancing our brand nationally. For more information on IMPACT 2020, visit GoZips.com/IMPACT2020. Over the next couple of years, Zips fans will see the transition to the "Z" logo across all of Akron's sports facilities, team gear and fan apparel. The first facility to see the "Z" logo is the court inside James A. Rhodes Arena. The arena floor, which was resurfaced in May, features a giant Blue and Gold "Z" at center court, a two-tone "Fear the Roo" kangaroo head under each basket and two shades of wood stain, with a darker shade surrounding the basketball court.
  8. Thanks for posting! He says there have been no talks within the university about dropping the football program to a lower level to save money, as proposed by the head of the University of Akron's Faculty Senate. "I'm not focused on dropping anywhere. I'm focused on staying where we are, and being competitive, and having a good team on the field," Mortimer says. Mortimer says getting more people in InfoCision Stadium - for both athletic and other events - is a focus.
  9. Will UA's faculty be making a recommendation for Pitt's football program?
  10. Have you considered asking KD the question? Maybe he will appear on UAtoZ. KD is enlightening & entertaining on the post game radio show. I'm assuming he will repeat the same thing his followers continually post here. But maybe in a different forum he'll be more forthcoming. It will be interesting to see if the new AD shares his scheduling philosophy.
  11. Any article written about the state of Akron football without mentioning the tool bag, is incomplete...to put it mildly.
  12. SiriusXM and The Players' Tribune Launch New National Radio Show. For those that have SiriusXM, and are Cavs fans, there is an excellent 20 minute interview with Kevin Love on The Players Tribune radio show. He does a nice job of explaining what happened when he opted out of his contract. He goes into more detail about his pool side meeting with LBJ. I didn't realize how close he was growing up with Clay Thompson and the Thompson family. He calls himself a comic book nerd, and loves Game of Thrones. He is super pumped about the new Star Wars. He touches a little on his injury...still struggling. Go to Sports, ONDemand, PlayersTribune Channel 85.
  13. Not on Dejan Kovacevic's site. One of the best "hometown" sports sites I read.
  14. I'll wait to see which offense the Zips use before I commit.
  15. It would be interesting to hear Dr S comment on the coaches contracts. I wonder if the word "that" would pop into a sentence again.
  16. I thought it was pretty obvious with the topic title and date, but I'll expand. An owner can write an ignorant letter about the best player in the league, and the best player in the league comes back to his team years later to try to win a championship. I understand the reasoning, but considering what happened five years ago, I'm surprised how it played out. It makes me smile as to how LBJ can hold Gilbert over the fire by signing one year contracts each year. It's also beneficial to Cavs fans that the same owner is trying to buy a championship by spending tons of money to appease the same player he publicly insulted. Considering the topic title and date, if anybody could have predicted the events in the past year, you are better at predicting than me. I'm surprised. Considering the posts from the beginning of this thread, I'm betting I'm not the only one.
  17. How times have changed. Dan is now making it rain in Cleveland. I'm a little surprised how this is playing out.
  18. Robert Stein is one of 30 players nationally named to the 2015 Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award Watch List, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced on Thursday. GoZips article found here.
  19. JUST RELEASED: Kevin Love speaks directly to the camera about his decision. Enjoy. Chris Fedor writes about the The Players Tribune. Two articles in the PD about The Players Tribune in one day. I'm seeing a trend. Now you can write articles and quote directly from The Players Tribune. No need to even leave your house to get quotes from the players, you can just read them. Interesting. I can imagine this will get confusing for the conspiracy theorists when traditional journalists are quoting from sources that they have to "take with a grain of salt." For Browns fans, Hawk — Whatever it takes.
  20. It should be interesting if the new AD has higher expectations, or is satisfied with the status quo.
  21. Mo Williams Full Circle
  22. I agree to nothing yet. Who is the replacement, and what are his goals? A great artist once wrote, "meet the new boss, same as the old boss." I won't get fooled again.
  23. I enjoy the content, layout and photography. Three things most of todays local "journalistic" coverage misses. I hope they continue to invest the time and work. Taken from Wikipedia: Critics have brought up some questions as to the role of traditional reporters and beat writers in sports today, the founding publisher, Derek Jeter, said, "We're not trying to take away from sportswriters. Sportswriters are what makes sports successful," he said. "I think we're sort of working in conjunction with them."[11] There are some media outlets that are not sure the Tribune has a footing in today's digital media when other social platforms such as Twitter" [8] “It’s like the Go Pro of sports journalism, offering an inside first-person perspective”, said Jason Marks, executive creative director. “We’re giving the athletes that fans know and love a voice. This is longform social, to tell stories with content in a natural way”, added Mark Grande, VP content strategy. “It will be a platform where athletes control their own voice. It’s meant to complement what’s out there and provide opinions, POVs and perspective”, said Jaymee Messler, CMO, Excel Sports Management All editors, contributors and photographers are listed too.
