Should UA Capitalize on the World Cup
Dr Z replied to Zipsrifle's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
At least those people care enough to discuss with you as to why they are not in love with the sport that you are. If you are confused as to why soccer is not popular in the US, those might be the people to listen to. After watching a weekend of Zips final four soccer last year and not seeing a goal scored, and catching the last 3 minutes of the Paraguay "victory" this afternoon. My second biggest problem with the sport, is the way soccer ends a tie. I have to think that this HAS to bother real soccer fans (considering myself just an ignorant fan). I know from "playing" pickup soccer for ten minutes in the backyard with one of my friends that played high school soccer that I have no talent when it comes to dribbling or defending, he can run circles around me. I might, be able to get in shape enough to run the field the way players do, but I doubt it. I appreciate the talent that a soccer player has and don't for a second think I could be valuable to any 12 year old team. My feet don't work like that. BUT I'm sure I would have a fifty percent chance of scoring on a goalie with a free kick. I think it is a insult to the game to decide games on penalty kicks. What an awful way to decide a soccer game...a kickball contest. It takes so much talent to play 99 percent of the game and you decide the outcome of the game with the 1 percent that requires the least amount of talent. Why is it that NFL, MLB, NHL, NASCAR constantly talk about changing their rules and making the game better for the fan, but soccer-guy gets offended when you try to discuss a change? I don't get it. -
Patrick Nicely & Brian Wagner Pre Season All MAC

That's funny. Half of this board doesn't even think PN7 is our starter. -
Unless that QB sees more playing time elsewhere because he suspects the position could be locked down for 3 years. Buffalo now has 4 QBs coming in the class of 2010, and Licata is their first of 2011. Guess UB's staff isn't happy with those 4 then, probably good decision by him. If QB's at UB get the calls they did against the Zips last year, I'd go there too.

Only 25% of the NFL wore the Revolution helmet last year. Creepy-Ben is going to wear it this year after rejecting it upon team request for three years. It's probably too late for Ben, but the more kids seeing superstars wearing it, the more they will want to wear it.

Easy. I concluded the exact same thing about most of the teams on our schedule. So you didn't look at the schedule last month?

Less talent. No history. Dumb rules. Up against the most popular league in the US. etc.. -

I agree. NHL used to be boring/less exciting. They fixed this by making it more offensive, which in turn makes the game entertaining. They stopped all the clutching and grabbing, stopped the two line pass, increased the ice behind the net. I look for them to reduce the size of the goalies equipment this off season also. I like Eric Winston's thoughts: Hockey does a similar thing. When a game is tied at the end of regulation, it goes into a 4-on-4 overtime. Taking one man off each team creates open skating with more shots on net. -
I'll stick with my predictions from last month (May). Zach, this month you predict 5 wins, last month 2, what's next month gonna be? What changed since you thought "we're crap, the coach is crap, the talent is crap"?

I was going through some archives and run across this classic. Sorry about the quality. One of the most entertaining Zips players in my time. Worth the price of admission. I hope Josh Egner's 37-inch vertical can live up to this style of play.

Root for the USA or Ghana?

I'll take a wild stab in the dark, I don't religiously watch Sports Center like a lot of people, but maybe "sports center guy", doesn't particularly care much about soccer and would see less World Cup coverage on SC if the US lost. Then SC can get back to the Farve, TO and LBJ free agent stories that this guy craves. Just a guess though. Want to make any sport more interesting? Be a man, bet on it. BoDog.com odds on winning the World Cup Argentina 4/1 Brazil 9/2 Spain 5/1 Netherlands 13/2 Germany 10/1 England 12/1 Uruguay 14/1 Portugal 18/1 USA 33/1 Paraguay 33/1 Chile 40/1 Ghana 40/1 Mexico 50/1 Japan 66/1 South Korea 125/1 Slovakia 150/1 Switzerland 150/1 Ivory Coast 750/1 Honduras 5000/1 -
I Hope he has the seats that you can get beer. I watched PN7 go toe to toe with #5 on the list, then he beat him.

Yes. I would rank Patrick between 7 and 4.
-
I don't think that is their idea. It says TOP (QB, RB, TE, WR, K), not all. They ranked a BG running back, but did not list a BG wide receiver because they feel BG does not have a top wr in the conference. If they listed all, some teams may have two kickers on the list before one of ours. So maybe they feel we don't have a top anything. If I were an Akron skill player, I would use this as motivation and place the list in my locker.
-
I think they missed Nicely & Allen, but that's probably it. You know their story better than the writer does, so are you really missing anything? Then again, maybe the writer doesn't feel Akron has a top QB, RB, WR, TE or K!?!? Hopefully the team changes his mind by the end of the season.

Vuvuzelas and the AK-Rowdies

I like the Ole Ole Ole cheer much better than the horns. I hate air horns, thundersticks or any other prop. I even liked when the Hab's fans sing it in the NHL. It sure made a lot of hockey fans (including me) find out the origin. The sports singing tradition that I despise most is when Boston fans sing Sweet Caroline in the middle of the 8th at every home game. -

Santana is a player. Good job Dodgers minor league system. The ball jumps off his bat, he is almost good enough to start paying attention again. Then I start to think about it, four years and he is a free agent if he refuses to sign a contract extension like Choo. Depressing league. Photo Gallery from LeBron Day -
Nice article. The way that he handled himself in this situation, I will predict he is going to be a successful air traffic controller. Good luck to him.

Conspiracy to draw attention away from the World Cup.

Analysts told Crain's New York Business that James, who becomes a free agent July 1, would have a huge impact on the company's stock price and revenues. A Knicks team featuring James would boost MSG Network's ratings, along with bringing an immediate $10 million to $20 million increase in revenue, Patrick Rishe, a professor of economics at Webster University, told Crain's. If the Knicks start making the playoffs, the annual spike could skyrocket by as much as $50 million. At the same time, Rishe said the value of the franchise, which Forbes put at $586 million last year, to increase by as much as $150 million with James, according to Crain's. LeBron can be cash cow for MSG LBJ impact on Chicago....2.7 BILLION with a B! -

I filtered them out when I watched Akron soccer on tv last year with this. I may have accidentally put on some kind of goal filter also, I'm not sure. -
