Anybody else recognize the effort of true freshman Alvin Davis? What a great game. Second on the team in tackles, tied in first with one pass defended. I'm not sure I have seen a smaller guy on an Akron defense make such an impact. That open field tackle he made on the RB when he sent him skyward was awesome. His defended pass was at the goal line on the tight end!?!?

The Zips rush 35 times, only 4 members predicted that. The Zips win by 22, only eight members predicted that. The Zips hold the Redhawks to under 16 points, only six members predicted that. A couple of members selected 2 correct, but no member had all three right. Better luck next week nation!

Zips favored by ten.

From the Magazine Vanity Fair THE FIGHT TO SAVE JOHNNY MANZIEL FROM ALL-OUT SELF-DESTRUCTION The former Cleveland Browns quarterback’s epic fall—from the hottest thing in football to N.F.L. washout—was agonizing for those who tried to prevent it. His inner circle describes the clash of talent and temptation. BY BRYAN BURROUGH OCTOBER 6, 2016 5:00 AM

Totally agree. I would play cover 2 against TW all day. I make him hand off as many times as I can, and make him throw to the middle of the field. His deep ball is unreal, and I'm scared of his ability to strike quick on long plays. I want him orchestrating a 10+ play drive instead of a 5 play drive that ends up with Jojo/Lane/Wolf dancing in the end zone. If TC5 starts, he is going to see man, we need to win 3 or 4 of those matchups to keep the defense honest. His second half last week is a good indication he can. Bryce Jones was doing everything last week. Now he's expanding his role this week....

If you are coaching against the Zips, do you game plan different between the two QB's? Is it possible TC5 starts, and Tommy dresses just incase he needs relief?

This reminded me of the image CK took and included in his article.

It's becoming pretty hard to argue with the success that coach Bowden's staff is having recruiting Florida.
-
Awesome article. “I just know that his most important measurable is his heart and work ethic,” said Bowden, “The odds were against him to be a D-I player, so the odds are definitely against him to be an NFL player. But don’t count him out. I know with anybody who plays this hard, the sky’s the limit.” Akron defensive line coach Todd Stroud, who played at Florida State under Bobby Bowden, talked often with Sirianni about Copeland. Those talks intensified after signing day in 2013.“This young man was unsigned, and we evaluated him,” Stroud said. “He had great speed. He had a great motor. His body weight actually was unbelievable. He went from about 212 pounds up to 266 pounds from the time we signed him. We signed him as a defensive end type guy, but he added so much body mass and strength. “Darius has impeccable character. I think that when his mother passed, it was a heartbreaking deal. But they are very strong, family-oriented people.” After talking with Stroud and Sirianni, Bowden green lighted Copeland’s scholarship. Copeland is on track to graduate in 2018 with a degree in sport management. “So Todd, he looks for linemen who have great effort and are great weight room guys,” Bowden said. “Darius fits that mold. He’s one of the strongest guys on our team. He has been a monster in the weight room, and right now, he’s in a position to help our football team.” I think it's worth the time to give the author (David Dorsey) a "like" or retweet.

For what it's worth, these really aren't official since coaches don't have to disclose, but.... 10/05/16 Jamal Marcus Undisclosed out for season (coach confirmed in this week presser) 10/04/16 Warren Ball Undisclosed "?" Saturday vs. Miami Ohio 10/02/16 Thomas Woodson "?" Saturday vs. Miami Ohio

Is it too soon to start discussing Zips basketball?
Dr Z replied to kreed5120's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
If the Zips have a successful season, you will be correct. IMO. I think some basketball unis with all gold would look sharp. Especially when we play in Portage county. -
Notes from the above presser, if someone didn't want to spend 30 minutes watching. I'll paraphrase these. • We run the same offense with either QB, we may emphasis two or three specific plays for one or the other. • Zach Guiser (safety) is the QB of our defense. We may mix others with him back there, but he is the constant. • Wolf had hernia last year and he is now healthy and getting his speed back. • Kato is in a great position, he is the third QB, gets varsity reps, and has the ability to red shirt. He looks good, throwing, running and has smarts. • We are better at successful big running plays this year. Pleased with the offensive line's progression and potential. Too many holding calls, but they should get better with time, and everybody returns next year. • Said Jatavis would be the best value in draft, seems true. They use Jatavis as the example of hard work, it's what seperates successful NFL players. ----------------------------------------------- The 2016 Hall of Fame Class, including the Team of Distinction– the 1976 Football Team, will be inducted prior to the game and introduced at halftime. Prior to the game against Miami, ZipsFest presented Summa Health, will take place in Stile Athletics Field House. ZipsFest will run from 1pm until 2:45 pm and will feature inflatables, football practice stations, face painting stations, and balloon artists. The event takes place before every home game and is FREE of charge!

TOP 10 NFL ROOKIES ENTERING WEEK 5 With Week 4 in the books, we’ve witnessed one of the largest shakeups in PFF’s race for rookie of the year yet. Four new faces make the list, including three players in the secondary. Of course, it’s the quarterbacks that still reign supreme. 7. Jatavis Brown, LB, Chargers It’s the year of the Day 3 pick, as we see another Saturday selection make the top-10. Jatavis is currently grading above-average in run defense, coverage, and when rushing the passer. With that kind of production, the Chargers’ coaching staff has taken notice, moving him to a full-time role after the season-ending injury to Manti Te’o, instead of limiting the rookie to sub-packages. He played 68 snaps against the Saints, and is currently PFF’s 25th highest-graded linebacker.

"Zips fans can look forward to more uncertainty. Coach Terry Bowden said during his news conference on Tuesday that Woodson, who threw on a very limited basis, has not been ruled out for Saturday’s game against Miami University. Bowden said he feels comfortable putting the offense in Chapman’s hands again." If Woodson can't play this week, and he plays against (ranked) WMU next Saturday, he will not have thrown a meaningful pass in 21 days. Let's hope he can go this week.

Go man, and load the box. The true freshman....against the Ohio Bobcats last weekend in relief...14-of-25 for 154 yards and a td, despite the 4.4 yards per attempt

I can't. The horse collar might be one of the most shortsighted rules in football. One person got hurt in the history of football, and they made a rule. The only thing it does is limit a players options to get a ball carrier to the ground without helmet to helmet contact.

Consider the source: Woodson listed as "?" for Saturday.

It's worth watching the replay...especially the second half. At the very least, watch the last five minutes.
