  1. Hell yeah! Good to hear. That old building was an eyesore. That may be the best idea I've seen on this board EVER. Swenson's is naturally an Akron icon and visitor's would get a taste of the tradition here.
  2. Here's UA's article from the schools website:http://www.uakron.edu/about_ua/news_media/...tech%20transfer
  3. I must be misinterpreting this? Why would Proenza leave in 3-4 years?
  4. Akron has something that most--well none--- of the other MAC schools have. We have a dynamic President who takes athletics seriously, and realizes just how effective a strong football or basketball team can be in creating publicity for the school. A strong sports program(specifically football) can "make" a school. Take Ohio State for example. Ten years ago, any idiot from Ohio who applied could get in. Fast forward to today in the midst of the Tressel era, and look at OSU's acceptance rate. I have friends who are students at OSU and are a part of the recruiting team there(i.e. they bother prospective students with multiple phone calls) and they told me that OSU has plans on increasing it's admissions selectivity to that of the Ivy's within the next couple years. My point is, that OSU's football team, and it's Nat'l championships over the past few years(regardless of where the team is now) has increased the applicant pool there to the degree that they are benefiting academically.Proenza realizes this correlation between sports and academics more than most MAC presidents, and the brand new stadium(especially despite the economic times were in) is a testament to that. While Can't State's president talks about making cuts within the athletic department, Akron is drawing up plans for a new soccer stadium and possibly a basketball arena.Essentially, what it's going to come down to is the players, coaches, staff, and community to instill a winning tradition. Proenza has set this school up for success in the long haul, and now it's up to the teams to make it happen. If our teams utilize the facilities, coaching, and skilled athletes we've brought here the past few years, domination in the MAC isn't that far off. THEN, we can talk about conference moves . Besides, don't you guys just love playing Can't every year??
  5. That joke of team in Columbus is lifetime 24-1 Vs the MAC and lone loss was to Akron in 1894.vmd9! I remember you! You were the one who's first post was those sweet UA graphics!btw...sorry for starting such a a firestorm. I just have the opinion that schools like Indiana and Purdue would have trouble winning the MAC year in and year out. And 9 out of 10 years? Are you crazy? Someone made a good point about home games. If those teams had to play schools like Akron or CMU AT our place, there's no way they would win the conference 9 times out of 10.It's a moot point. We'll never know. Let's just focus on winning our conference the way it is now.
  6. two seasons ago...and they lost multiple times to the MAC last year. They are the joke of the big ten.Don't forget Purdue, Illinois, and Northwestern. The Big Ten sucks. Any of the teams from the bottom half of their conference could play in the MAC and wouldn't even win it most years(and that's with the Big Ten recruits they get now..give them a few years of MAC recruits...). Yet, if they win six games, you'd better believe they will have a nice bowl game. The BC$ sucks.
  7. a. too much informationb. I'm not sure why cant state continues to field a football team. Give the new stadium a few years to work it's recruiting magic and Can't will become another Youngstown State to us(At least as far as football is concerned).
  8. I couldn't have said it better myself SeeTee. I have the slightest inkling that those posters on ABJ's website are really just one dude..there's no way there's that many ignorant people living in one city. Also: SWEET pics everyone! Even though I walk past the stadium everyday on the way to class, I never really get a chance to sit and soak it in like I can on here.
  9. Anyone know the status of that run down car wash(?) across the street from the stadium? Does UA have plans to buy that?
  10. I have yet to meet a young college graduate/college student who didn't come out with some sort of debt. I'd listen to a lot of the posters above, like pdt. They bring up a lot of good points about saving money. You're most likely going to be in debt no matter where you go, or what you do, it's really just a matter of how much debt you want that to be.I just said screw it, used loans, and I'll be graduating with my BS in ChemE in the spring of '13 (extra year for co cops). Whatever you decide to do, good luck.
  11. Yeah I dunno. I was just trying to be funny so.... of course artistic license is in play.LOL I mean all you gotta do is look at the guys to know we aren't talking about actual heritage, just name-play... but what american isn't a mutt anyway. But I always thought Macs were scottish and O's were irish. That must be some stereotype I misunderstood. That whole celtic thing is what I was getting at. Hence the bagpipesMc is irish and Mac is scottish. Is that whats causing all the confusion? Not like it really matter. Like you said, just names.
  12. I love professors who make comments on any of UA's athletic teams. Dr. Donovan from the Chemistry department wears Akron zips football jerseys all the time, and always makes mention of big upcoming home games. I wish all the profs at UA were as team spirited as he is.As far as attendance goes, your probably right skip-zip. The low numbers are mostly due to teams with out any real appeal to students and the Akron area. When BG, OU, etc come into town, I'd also expect to see more. A lot of the students have friends going to those colleges, so the game may mean more to them. Regardless, you can't blame the weather lately. It's been gorgeous outside (at least by mid-feb in NEO terms)
  13. Of course it's not as offensive. But what Harrison did is still pretty scummy. What happened in the Houston game is MUCH worse than what Harrison did, but where do you draw the line? I guess that's all I'm saying.
  14. Thanks for posting the videos DrZ. Especially the video of the loser Browns fan at the Christmas Eve blow out. Watching that never gets old. I was at that game and stayed until the last second ticked off. I sat in the club section and my wife and I were the only two people left in our entire section when the last second ticked off. What we see on this video is not cause for a multiple game suspension or even an ejection. Rough play? Yes. Penalty worthy? Yes. The real fine should be for the punter who ran around the goings on like a scared little girl. As far as I am concerned, #47 is a little bitch for allowing himself to be abused like that. The only thing missing was him falling into the UFC male on male sex position. It takes a special kind of coward to hit a man while he's down. No matter who your favorite team is you cant deny that. It sort of reminds me of this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBgyvFRBkDUThe saddest part is the fact that the guy who stepped on Budinger was getting high fives from his teammates. Pretty scary how little class is shown. At least the Steelers are professional enough to acknowledge that what Harriosn did was wrong, right??
  15. Who said complaining gets you nowhere?haha good point. awesome. If you ever get a chance, try and bring up the College of Engineering's page. It's really crumby looking and misrepresents the college.I believe we were looking at updating it, but I believe the higher-ups in the engineering dept are dragging their butts on it. I could be wrong, but dont quote me.That would definitely not surprise me. :rolleyes:Well, anyway, if you're right....hopefully someone in the engineering dept. steps up to the plate here soon. Thanks for the info.
  16. awesome. If you ever get a chance, try and bring up the College of Engineering's page. It's really crumby looking and misrepresents the college.
  17. Wow, no joke about the band website. That's pretty bad. I especially like the shots of band members that look straight out of the nineties. There's a few outdated pictures used in some of the booklets UA sends to prospective students. Talk about sending the wrong image. Although after looking at the 08-09 undergrad prospectus is gives me hope that the marketing team here is worth something.
  18. True, but the opinion anyone who chooses the name "Akron's Ron Burgundy" should be given less merit.
  19. I totally believe that. Naturally, because of the majors most emphasized at UA (computer science, engineering, bussiness, etc) there is little interest in the liberal point of view. I bet that on average, an engineering student is less likely to be liberal than a journalism major. Whereas at schools like OU, Miami, and Can't, where the arts/journalism are a more popular major, there is then an increase in liberal minded students. Yes, I'm generalizing...but I'm sure there's a correlation there.Another good point to add---the only conservative minded students with enough free time to send in a well written piece are probably too busy with their studies. When you major in philosophy it isn't as much of a struggle to write a few articles for the school paper. Mechanical Engineering is another story. So that probably explains why the only conservative slants you guys got were endless rants. Either way, I'm glad to see UA have its an independent news source. Those kids work hard at something, just for the fun(?) of it. They should be commended for that regardless of their ideologies.
  20. You may now continue lurking.
  21. Wow good news! Does anyone know if we'll be playing OSU again in '09? That was a fun trip!Next year: MAC champs, Final Four, Nat Champs! Then we can work on the futbol americano team we got...
  22. the links demonstate what you see time and time again from people in all sorts of situations, from politics to sports to just about anything else..... The lesson: Bias dictates how you will view things.Just about anything can be rationalized and spun positive or negative depending on how you want to see it.I didn't see this post before I responded. You're exactly right zen. You pretty much summed it up.
  23. Someone has some racial issues going on. That explains a lot. Why does race always have to be brought up in situations like this?If it's a white guy who hits a black guy, then all the blacks call it out as an act of racial hatred. Then if the roles are switched white guys piss and moan about the double standard that exists(not that that happened here, but I'm surprised it hasn't yet). Can't we just admit that Harrison is a great player who made a scumbag move? Everyone has their moments. Perhaps he was being held all day. Does that legitimize what he did? That's really a question that's subjective to the opinion of the fan. No one can argue one way or the other. Let's move on. There's more important things going on in the nation(zipsnation, that is). And as adults and college graduates/students you should all realize that.
  24. I think they add the standing room in the grassy area behind the endzone. I could be wrong though.edit: yep. Per http://www.uakron.edu/stadium/quickfacts.php:"30,000 (This includes all seats in stadium, as well as projected standing room only in the endzone berm and concourse areas."
