  1. The double bye effectively makes it incredibly difficult for seeds 5-12 to win the tournament. I'm perfectly ok with that and think that's the way it should be. Sure, you'll have years like this year where you have multi-team ties, but ultimately one of your top 4 teams is going to probably win it. This year Akron was 4 games better than Kent in the MAC - a significant difference in conference play - and Kent only had to play one more game, with 2 days rest in between. I fear the MAC will never have continued tournament success if we're sending lower seeds (which, in turn, get crap NCAA seeds). Just my two cents.
  2. I'm a big proponent of mid-major conferences making the regular season more important given the lack of at-large berths. It seems the double-bye helped make that happen. The argument against it was that there was often not a big difference between #4 and #5, or even #2 and #3, but personally, I'd rather deal with that and get the best regular season teams in more often. Thoughts?
  3. I loved seeing Ivey, Williams, Dunn-Martin, and Utomi getting key minutes last night - they'll be very important moving into next year.
  4. This kid can really play. Hope to see him in blue and gold.
  5. There's been a lot of discussion centered around the Zips finally breaking through as a program and making an NCAA Tournament run. 2012-2013 might have been that year, if not for some significant off-court issues. On October 2, 2012, Quincy Diggs was suspended for the 2012-2013 season. Diggs was MAC Sixth Man of the Year the previous season and was primed to break out even more. The loss of Diggs hurt significantly, but Akron still rolled through the MAC, achieved a Top 25 ranking, and looked like a team that would make a March run. Then, on March 7th, Alex Abreu was arrested and charged with two third-degree felonies of drug trafficking and drug abuse. Abreu's Zips career was done. Even still, the talented Zips managed to win the MAC Tournament title. Unfortunately, they drew an awful matchup - VCU - and half of the team came down sick the night before the game. Akron was drubbed and the season was over. You can't change the past and actions bring consequences, but I can't help but think of what might have been if Diggs didn't get suspended and Abreu wasn't arrested. F - Treadwell (Jr) / Harney (Jr) F - Gilliam (Sr) / Kretzer (Fr) / McAdams (Fr) C - Marshall (Sr) / Forsythe (Fr) G - Diggs (Sr) / Walsh (Sr) / Ibitayo (So) G - Abreu (Jr) / Betancourt (Fr) That roster is STACKED and would have easily be the most talented roster in program history. As we discuss Keith Dambrot constructing a roster to take this program to the next level, I can't wonder if he already built it once, but lost it due to poor off-court decisions/actions by his players.
  6. I guess I don't get where you think they don't give a damn about taking the next step...?
  7. What coach would you rather have in the MAC?
  8. Sounds like this forum too.
  9. I'm just not sure where this thought comes from. The coaching staff has gone to great lengths to elevate the program - trying guys like Tree and Harney, grabbing transfers like Walsh and Gilliam, looking to build recruiting hotbeds across the country (Texas). It hasn't all worked, but some of it has, and we've had the best program in the MAC over the past ten years. Of course we want more, and so do the leaders of this program. Could someone other than KD and his staff do better? Maybe, but I think chances are stronger that a replacement would do worse. Be careful what you wish for.
  10. To expand: L, 53-52 to Miami L, 74-55 to Kent W, 65-53 over Buffalo L, 81-75 to Ohio W, 66-65 over Kent L, 64-63 to Ohio W, 65-46 over Ohio L, 64-61 to Buffalo L,70-65 to Kent You can look at that a few ways: 1-We are 3-6 in MACC games, which is not good and should be better. 2-As skip-zip pointed out, we've won more MAC Titles in the last 10 years than anyone else. Combined with our number of Finals appearances, we're the best program - on paper - over the last 10 years. 3-The 9 title game appearances and 3 titles have been great, but damn, it would have been nice to win 1 or 2 more of those, at least. I'm in group #3. I'm proud of our accomplishments and wouldn't trade our results with anyone else in the MAC, but I also want more now.
  11. He's been mentioned with Youngstown State, Cleveland State, and Miami already.
  12. 1-Not going to even get into this debate again, but it's been shown in the past that scheduling has improved over the years. 2-Shaka Smart did pretty well for himself. Jeff Boals moved on to OSU. Rick McFadden is currently being looked at as a head coach by several schools. Couldn't disagree more on the quality of assistants. 3-I'm not at practice (and I know you aren't either) so who knows, but Zeke Marshall, Big Dog, and Pat Forsythe had pretty nice careers. 4-I'm sure they practice free throws. 5-Ivey (Soph), Williams (Soph), TDM (Fresh), Utomi (Fresh), and Olojakpoke (Fresh) all played significant minutes throughout the season and last night in the championship game.
  13. This is not at all true. I'm not going into details, but I can promise you it had nothing to do with on-court stuff and I'm OK with Willie going elsewhere, as talented as he is.
  14. Updated 5/14/17 On Scholarship: 13 Open Scholarships: 0 Isaiah Williams / Jaden Sayles Daniel Utomi / Eric Parrish Emmanuel Olojakpoke / Mark Kostelac Jimond Ivey / Craig Eubanks / Malcolm Duvivier / Torrey Patton / Marquelle McIntyre Loren Jackson (transfer, must sit out 17-18) Deng Riak (transfer, must sit out 17-18) Eric Hester (transfer, must sit out 17-18)
  15. 7 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists. Not really terrible.
  16. Antino is the perfect 6th man - brings energy and scoring off the bench. Let Noah set up Big Dog to start and have Antino go to work when BD comes out. Still have him finish games. Sadly (and this is a pure guess) I don't sense Antino would respond well to that.
  17. He was straight up
  18. Anyone have a LeBron Zips jersey you're looking to sell?
  19. Toledo's teams aren't exactly known for winning MAC Tournaments, so best of luck to him. Those games will be fun.
