I don't care what he was in high school. Some kids are simply later bloomers. The coaching staff realized he was good enough for a scholarship offer (as did Iona) and I can't blame them based on what I see. He was good moves and wonderful touch around the rim, shoots efficiently, can play some good defense, hustles, is athletic, and very coordinated for somebody his size. I see the potential but am not too disappointed, as like you said and we all know, he was thrown to the wolves when he really should have been redshirted under normal circumstances. I think we need to keep in mind that all of these freshman have been thrown into the fire and need to consider that when evaluating them. I do have some that I'm higher on than others, but certainly not going to write anyone off in their true freshman season playing a lot more minutes than they should. His biggest issues to me are adjusting to the speed of the game at the D1 college level and getting rid of freshman mental errors. He does get called for some crappy fouls, but some of them are completely avoidable. I'm high on big Mark. Certainly not the rest of this season, and he might be a candidate for a red-shirt next season, but I think he has a bright future based on what I've seen he's able to do. He just needs to do it on a consistent basis.

Good stuff B&G. Looking forward to that first HS commit for this class. I'd like to see a good QB added and some DEs and LBs right off the top of my head. Akron guys that I'd hate to see get away are Matt Salopek, DeeArius Reece, and Kyre Williams. Going to have to beat out at least Toledo for all of them I believe.

I don't see a team more talented than us...which is a good sign for the future I think. I see a serious lack of depth (especially on the inside) and too many freshman mistakes.

I'd have to look at the stats, but I don't even think Gasser was better than O'Leary. Thats a change that baffled me throughout the season. I can't disagree too much though. Lets give a scholly to the best kicker and then a good young kicker. Its worth it.

That's pretty fair...and why i'm willing to engage in back and forth with you. Counterpoint: Duquesne and UA are more on the same level than Akron and OSU. They are both mid-majors. UA to Duquesne is a 1:43 trip per google maps. UA to OSU is 1:52. Same state or not, Duquesne is closer. Duquesne is also much closer than the majority of our conference foes. Yes the A-10 is better, but is Duquense better? Sort of like saying the B1G is better than the American, but is Rutgers really a better job than Wichita State? Are Duquesne and Akron not competing for attention now? Seems there are plenty of fans paying attention to Duquesne (even at the expense of Akron) that never would have gave them a thought in the past. I would call that competing for attention. As for another player, Torey Patton comes to mind right away. Yahell Hill, Maceo Austin, and Josh Corbin are 3 guys in the future just by looking on verbal commits for 2 minutes.

Idk.... I doubt any OU fans are wishing Groce success here. It's not like he left us for a clearly better job a la Fleck to Minnesota, Groce to IL, etc., etc. He is still the competition..whether it be for current players (the ones he took), future players (we've already recruited against him multiple times), fans (seems like some people were more KD fans than Zips fans), and even on the court (if he ever has the cojones to schedule us). Not saying you, but its interesting to me that there are people who are the biggest OSU haters on the site and claim that they are our competition, yet are seemingly rooting for KD at Duquesne. Different strokes for different folks I suppose. It is a bit agitating to see this board praising a coach who Akron wasn't good enough for. Its very easy to argue he took a step down while taking a slight pay raise. And yes, I certainly appreciated what he did he and wish he didn't leave before anyone tries to say otherwise.

Those taking joy in Duquesne's wins is the weirdest subplot of the 17-18 season. Frankly I only point it out due to the knob-slobbin' that was taking place in this thread earlier in the season, especially when it comes in the form of discrediting our current coach.

Would using the word "left" instead of "abandoned" make you feel that much better? Sheesh.

It may have been and I can't complain too much because we won, just hated seeing them get 2nd chance points.
