I was pretty close with my prediction. Is the MAC placing against Ohio in December, last game of the year because they think we're both going to be contending for the MAC C bid in the East? I love that the Kent game is scheduled October 1st. BEST chance to get fans to show up to the rivalry game if the weather is nice. Also: Akron Athletics/Administration...if you're going to make a game where there is a tuition drawing...make it that one.

This is a topic that's been discussed at length on this forum. Kreed, if a student graduates in 4 years that's roughly $3200 of a student's final cost went to supporting Athletics. No OSU student will pay $3200 over the life of their career to support OSU athletics. They pay $70 to go to one game, but it will never be $3200. There are division II teams that draw more student engagement than UA does...the question is why? As for pride for YOUR University Skip...I think UA may never be able to recapture that pride, if it ever had it to begin with. UA seems, IMO, to have suffered decades upon decades of people who 'Don't Give A Damn'; administrators, alumni and now it's trickled down to students. This is starting to happen to me, and unfortunately for UA...I'm starting to lose all enjoyment out of going to Akron games, and I can't quite understand why except that perhaps everything else happening at UA has me frustrated to the point that it must be spilling over.

Losing to kent...
-
This is getting ugly fast.
-
This is exactly the point I was making. Apparently it got lost over squabbling over if 10% of the student population or 15% of the student population lives on/near campus. Point: We need to engage the other 85% of students and make a reason for them to want to attend. Point: We need to engage the 15%, how much of the 15% actually knows there's a game/a reason to care about the game. Point: Tuition giveaway should not be one game, one drawing. Or it should be...but instead of 6 possible free tuitions for one game...2 for each game But for reference: 1500 students for all those dorms (assuming they're full)...1500/25000 = 6% of the student population. I doubt between 401 lofts, 22 exchange and the other ridiculously overpriced off campus options that there are 3000 other students to get that to 18%. But the on campus population, isn't really that high. I live in Highland square, we have a huge student population. I wouldn't consider any of them near campus.

I agree with what your saying. I'm a "recent" grad in the respect that I graduated in 2013, so all the new dorms were built while I was on campus. Same for 22 exchange and other housing projects. But the fact of the matter is; most students still are commuters at UA. The off campus housing you mention doesn't have the capacity for 15% of the student population at UA, and they're not even full. I don't expect Akron students to plan their lives around Akron sports either, I would like to see Akron take a more proactive approach to engaging students to get them to games. Setting up a sign that says "game today" is worthless. That's my point.
-
I know that, but they didn't to a combined thing with football like they're doing for basketball. I'm saying: don't do a 1 game 1 entry thing, that's dumb.
-
It isn't, students are in school for...you know, school. Akron's also still mostly commuter school. There's never been a good engagement with students on campus or the commuters; it amounts to a sign that reads "Game Today""get in free with Zipcard", I doubt any random student would know the record of the Zips because they're not engaged at all. But on a side note: Zips should do this for Football. Attend 3/6 home games and you get an entry into a drawing for free tuition. Attend all 6 you get 3 entries or something like that.
-
That Drexel president is right; the focus of every University should be providing the best education. I'd really like to see what plans the administration has to build a robust student and alumni community that would be willing to support things like sports during, and after their time at Akron. Still waiting for that Scar.

I'm calling my shot: Zips make it to the MAC Championship this season. Go Zips!
-
Noticed they did something tonight. They handed out tickets, and the only people who could get them before the half were season ticket holders. Off the street fans had to wait till at least half-time to get theirs. Smart, should have done that with the winter hats.

Dominik Hixon and Chase Blackburn...who's the guy in the middle?
-
We recruited a RB this year, and we should have another RB elligible after transferring here right? Fredrick Crow II?
-
Thanks for explaining! I never knew that. Both were seniors playing for Akron while I was a senior in HS. I was not a fan of Zips basketball until I became a student in the fall of '08...which is why I didn't understand who they were.
-
As one of the young Zips fans who might not know, would someone be willing to explain the significance of Dru Joyce and Romeo Travis? I know I've heard those names before...but they're both (I think) before my time as a Zips fan. This is a legit question of curiosity.

You could always join the young people and FeelTheBern (not making a political endorsement, just having a fun jab while pointing out that the single candidate supported by the most millennials is Sanders). But I couldn't agree more with what you said. You're point about skewed statistics is also spot-on. We're living in a culture, both public and private, of resume building, where people are in constant defense/justification of actions rather than being focused on a transparent and accurate/un-biased assessment of situations. It's going to take a push back by the public in the voting booth to change anything...as well as a candidate who's willing to take on this country's addiction to 18-22 year-olds.

The madness that is College Football at Universities in the United States continues. $1 million for research into the facility and as much as $126 million for the new stadium. BoT and schools need to wake up, IMO. Places of Higher Education should be about, first and foremost, education. http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/02/08/temple-trustees-vote-to-pursue-new-on-campus-football-stadium/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=college-football

As for QB depth...besides Kato, we currently have 4 other QBs on roster: Chapman, Caleb Chapman, Devyn Wood and Matthew Hoyer. I highly doubt Kato would be called into service this year, are any of these other guys serviceable? Even if Tra'von be tried at RB (I'd like to see that too) isn't there one of these other three guys who could be serviceable as backup? With that said TW13 is a bruising guy, I don't see him being as injury prone as KP16 was.

Scarborough's next move...
Balsy replied to urbanpreppie05's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
The homepage logo now says: "The University of Akron", Home of Williams Honor College and not "The University of Akron", Ohio's Polytechnic University. I found that interesting. The Honor's College is growing...that plan was instituted before Scarborough was here, by the previous administration. Now you do get to inherit things from your predecessor (both the good and bad). The question is does the new person make it better or worse? -
Recruiting rankings mean absolutely nothing. We had one of the worst recruiting classes last year...13 people? And yet we got to the BEST record we've ever had in D-I and the program's first Bowl win ever. If that's what we get with a terrible class, I can't wait to see what we do with a less than "terrible" class. What a joke.

Is Kalyn Nelson and Kato Nelson one in the same?
-
I'm pretty sure they're already on the team.
-
This will take some getting used to, but I think it's again an upgrade over what we had last time. Things Captain and all those who make this possible! Sidenote: Has anyone been screenshotting the homepage over the years of ZN.O? It'd be cool to one day look back and see all the different faces of ZNO over the years.

I know, I was trying to be ironic about that one. Speaking about #TeamOhio, where was the tweets from State Ohio University saying "Good Luck Zips" when the Zips were headed to the College Cup this season? I was told by all State Ohio University defenders that If Akron were in the same position for a national championship, SOU would do the same thing.
