The topic of Groce leaving interests me because he is really at a "precipice of a great crossroads" (one of Carmine Jr's many malapropisms from The Sopranos). First, I'll say this. He has made great money as a basketball coach. Kind of money over his time as a head coach and assistant at OSU that put him in the top 1% of incomes in the United States. As you get older, you start to think more and more about the end game (retirement). Groce is 50 and has from what I can tell is 12-13 years as a public employee in Ohio. Roughly 7-8 more years would put him at 20 and probably set up for a comfortable retirement on whatever retirement system Ohio has set up for public employees plus his investments. He might have one more run at a big time job, but he is getting closer to the point where that is probably unlikely. Akron could be a great place for him to ride out those last few years of years in the Ohio retirement system. He has a winning program and is in a pretty safe position at Akron. I wouldn't be in a hurry to go anywhere else. Heck, 8 more years at Akron, retire a legend and consult for a few years. Consulting or part time work is great for early retirement if all you are looking for is some extra scratch and health insurance. You don't want to pay for health insurance out of your investment principal if you want to go into early/semi-retirement. Not a bad life plan if you ask me.

If you didn't know what this was and someone told you it was a former sports stadium in Chernobyl, you would believe them.

The words "we belong" come to mind when I think about the game last night. Never had this feeling after an NCAA Tournament game before.
-
Disappointing loss. However, the level of tournament competency was nice to see.
-
I told my brother last night before the game the Zips we're a lock to win because Portland has games and the NCAA would send them there like they always do.

He who gets the last laugh laughs to loudest.

Kent's coach looks like a middle school gym teacher.
-
Much better.

Flat? I'd take flat right now.

Wake up!!!! Be ready for passes. Don't dribble until you are under and behind the basket. Stop the helter skelter behavior.
-
Please stop dribbling into double teams.
-
Go to ESPN News.

Or it's going to be a long night.

Akron hates Kent. Kent hates Akron. Tonight is going to be a fun night.
-
Interesting, it's the level of language for a graduate level composition class at Kent. They are not smart people.
-
Akron vs Kent is a great regional rivalry. I'm jealous of those of you who get to attend the game. If I still lived in Ohio I'd be looking forward to going to the game. The crowd looked solid last night on TV. Hopefully fans show up.

Keeping up with the Three D's (Dambrot, Dru & Duquesne)
GP1 replied to dirtyolcrowe's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Duquesne needs more than a uniform change. -
Great win. Something occurred to me and it really was bothering me during the game. In my years of watching Zips basketball, we seem to have a lot of odd dribbling and driving mishaps. No matter who the players and coaches are, these odd mishaps take place in a way you don't see anywhere else.

I hate the script Akron logo so much I'd probably join the Ukrainian resistance just to fire RPGs at it.
-
There is nothing preventing this from happening.
-
Isn't it obvious? It's going to be a logo for the soccer team that looks like every other soccer logo.
-
I prefer "Wagon Wheel Champion".

I like it. Only one weeknight game late in the season. I like opening day on a Thursday night before a holiday weekend. Lots of people take that Fri off and will be looking to do something with the family. The only screw job is the last two games on the road, but when you are horrible the prior year you can expect a conference screwing. Still don't like three games on the road in a row early.

Basketball practice facility (and more) coming
GP1 replied to jupitertoo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
For those who complain about no marketing to alumni, the home page of uakron.edu has a list of upcoming alumni events. One is in Cleveland. Have fun. -
Basketball practice facility (and more) coming

Not sure what you mean by destination, but Akron provides a better education than the others. The word marketing gets overused. There is a marketing problem, but the bigger problem is a lack of the University's resources being used to attract students by providing public services. It takes much more than a marketing department to pull this off. There has been too much bad news, but recently the University has been producing good news segments on social media. It's a good start. The problem in the past has been not highlighting the hundreds of things that go great so when one bad thing happens, it's the only thing people hear about the school and opinions sour. The hundreds of good stories create a soft landing for the bad story. There will always be at least one bad story. Something bad is always going to happen.
