Yesterday Akron posted this on their Facebook Page and its getting alot of mixed feedback

Are people making a big deal out of nothing?

The Akron Zips Men's Basketball Bobbleheads have arrived! The only place to get them is at the upcoming games on 1/26 vs. Buffalo (Lebron) and 2/16 vs. Bowling Green (Coach)! Only 1,500 sets were made, so don't miss out!

What bothers me about it is that we should honor our own with bobbleheads. LeBron never played for the Zips. As far as what he does for the program, has there been any other boosters who do as much, maybe more? Where are the bobbleheads for them?

The problem is, nobody wants a bobblehead of Akron's largest donor, but they'll line up at the turnstiles for something that has to do with LeBron.

LeBron is Akron's sport hero. And he's a national brand. Maybe the biggest athlete/celebrity in the county.

Why wouldn't we take advantage of every opportunity we have to publicize and celebrate his connection to Akron basketball?

After reading your reply, I realize how poorly I worded my post. My big issue is that we should honor our own...those who played for the blue and gold rather than someone who was never a Zips player. Honoring LeBron with a bobblehead is like doing so for other boosters.

I don't want to say any more on this because I realize that those who love kissing up to LeBron are okay with this and those who don't are not. I'll stay in my world of being impressed with and supporting players who actually played for the Zips.

So how many people are gonna show up for a Jimmal Ball bobblehead? Props to the marketing department for a good idea.

Actually, I would!

But I'm definitely showing early for a LeBron bobblehead. The chance that the world's most famous athlete happens to be an Akronite and a supporter of the Zips is one-in-a-billion. We'd be complete fools not to take every advantage of that.

I would imagine it is due to budget constraints.

Why not buy four thousand and make up the difference with extra tickets sold? This is a promotion. Promotions are designed to bring people to games. If they feel it is a worthwhile promotion, the cost shouldn't matter. In fact, buy five thousand and if there are any remaining, put a price tag on them and sell them.

I agree its a slap in the face to former and current players

The program should focus on having their own identity and not continuing to rely on Lebron James for one.

I don't know about yall but I get tired of hearing the play by play announcers basically talk about Lebron and Keith Dambrot's relationship through out every national broadcast game.

I wouldn't have a problem with the Lebron bobble head if there were others created before Lebron to honor players that actually played for UA.

I agree with this. It just doesn't make sense to make it 1,500 when the team already draws more than that to begin with. Seems like a failed marketing plan.

I thought about this for a little bit. I'm okay with the idea. I'm not sure I agree with a "slap in the face." I could be wrong, but I'm guessing more than a few current players end up with one. I'm all for honoring former players, but what bobblehead is going to be recognized by Joe Akron when you hand it to them at the entrance, Ball, Bosley? I'll give the marketing department credit for making this happen. I understand Cleveland fans don't like LBJ, but haven't we filled ZN with posts about how Akron fans want to separate from Cleveland? I also agree with GP1, make five thousand and hand them out as fans walk out the door. Sell the rest. I'm a tad nervous about giving a Cleveland fan this on the way in with the amount of embarrassing energy directed toward referees by some fans at the JAR.

Read the news article. Everybody is overlooking the fact that UA partnered with the Lebron James foundation and Powerade to supply fans with the bobbleheads. Do any current or former UA athletes have multi-million dollar foundations or sponsors to work with? Does anyone really want a bobblehead of Mike Bardo or Romeo Travis? Can student-athletes even have bobbleheads due to the NCAA rules? Like it or not, Lebron is the most popular person to ever step foot in Akron, Ohio. AND, even when you're getting stuff for free you still bitch. If you don't want a bobblehead say "No, thanks" and move on.
