Game 5—Ohio Bobcats (Homecoming)

I think this game could come down to one simple thing. Can the Zips, especially the defense, play aggressively without tempting the officials to flag them for questionable decisions? Two facts come into play here:

  1. UA has yet to play in a close contest in 2015.
  2. Since Solich has been HC, OU is not the type of team that defeats itself.

The Zips simply have to play with composure on both sides of the ball on Saturday in order to come away with the win.

My three keys are:

1. The condition of their QB's ankle .. I hope we come with blitzes from the bleachers, but that definitely plays into your point regarding discipline.

2. Running Game !! Especially the rain is present again at Info. Can our offensive line build on their confidence from the last two games !! ... I still have concerns if we are put in long passing situation, especially if we are behind.

3. TURNOVERS ......

I have watched film and these guys are a very solid, well coached team ...... They will capitalize on our stupid mistakes (penalties and TO's)

Should be a good one

My keys are:

1. Continued emergence of TW with accurate passing. I have no doubt they will play to limit our running and make us beat them via air.

2. Heavy pressure on their QB, whoever it is so he can't pick us apart.

3. Make field goals. Every one is probably going to count.

One OU poster correctly pointed out the Zips usually do something to shoot themselves in the foot against OU. Historically that is accurate, time for it to change. I believe!!! :) Zips finally get off the schnide against OU, Zips by a field goal. 23-20.

Saturday's weather forecast is changing by the hour. An hour ago the hourly forecast showed heavy rain in Akron at 2 p.m. Saturday. Right now it shows heavy rain after 5 p.m. Saturday. Everything depends on how hurricane Joaquin tracks, and that forecast is changing by the hour. We'll know for sure at game time.

According to teamrankings.com, the Zips would be favored in every game for the rest of the season except Bowling Green. They give the Zips a 55% chance against the kittens. Most likely record they project to is 7-5. A 6-2 Conference record would give the Zips the most wins in their D-1 history. I think it's possible.

That also should be the goal. But first things first: BEAT OHIO!

I'll have more thoughts on that after the Ohio game. I think this week is huge for showing if our program is over the "hump".

GT of the ABJ Three Keys of the Week. Reduce penalties, control the edge on the run, effectively run the ball to open the passing game.

I see the key as the opposite.

If Woodson can't throw, forget the running game. We're screwed. OU will stack the line and stuff it.

Like last week, the pass opens up the run.

I love that our WR's now look motivated to run their routes. That hasn't been the case for a couple years.

LZip wrote that he was "giddy" after last weeks win. That would have been my adjective, but get it. I told my wife, after last week's win, "That's the happiest I've been after a Zips game in a long time." To see such a complete performance on both sides of the ball, against a solid opponent, on the road, with some young guys like Lane and Woodson emerging, and Hundley flattening people...it was just something a Zips fan hasn't seen in a while.

I'd love to feel that way again tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

Not unless they beat OU tomorrow.
