Dr Z
Game shown on ESPN3. The Bulls beat what Jarryn Skeete called a "watered down Akron" Ball State team 76-64 on Tuesday. Edited January 31, 2016 by Dr Z
ZachTheZip
Ball State, like most MAC bottom feeder this years, is improved. But Akron should still be favored to win.
RowdyZip
George Thomas tweeted earlier today that Aaron Jackson is done for the year with a separated shoulder and Big Dog, Jake, and Reggie did not practice today for "precautionary" reasons. Tomorrow may be more of a challenge than expected. There are no road gimmes in the MAC this year.

kreed5120
I feel bad Aaron Jackson had his season cut short, but his absence shouldn't impact the team much. In 7 MAC league games he has 5 points, 0 assists, 7 boards in 34 minutes of play. On a per game basis that is .71 points 0 assists and 1 rebound lost per game. skip-zip
It seems that possibly Aaron was more in the plans for this year than the way it's worked out. He's been reduced to the "giving someone a rest" role. I was really hopeful for him. He's a great kid, and gives sooo much effort. I don't think it's always wise to judge a loss based only on the numbers that are lost, which obviously isn't much. But only time will tell if his lost minutes might cause us to stretch a few other guys into more minutes, resulting in less energy, and possibly more foul trouble. The Hip Zip
And the number is : Zips -3' for those of you that have an interest in that type of thing. Have a feeling that this is going to be a grind it out, low scoring, physical game. I'm certainly not assuming anything just yet. I watched Ball play EMU last week and while maybe not the most talented lot, they are a tough bunch. That was the game the refs totally screwed up and cost EMU the win, Two of them were suspended and it was well deserved.
clarkwgriswold
I will miss Jackson's effort on defense. While he an Ivey have contributed little on offense, they are probably the hardest working guys we have on defense.

Blue & Gold
Really good pre-game article by GT. http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/ua-basketball-zips-hope-to-use-size-to-their-advantage-against-ball-state-1.658299 "Although the Zips have struggled on dribble-drive defense, they’ve been improving. In their win over Miami, the effort showed. Against the Huskies, that effort translated to results. UA gave up only 24 points in the paint for the game. It helps that Ball State likes to shoot 3-pointers, an area where the Zips are strong defensively, ranking No. 1 in the country."
phil
Great article. To say that Kwan has been inconsistent offensively is an understatement. It would be great if he could have a great game on the road. If he plays well consistently it would really help this team. The last road game was a disaster so it will be interesting to see if this team can pull it together with a good team effort. zippy5
Nice feed on ESPN3. Antino will be on the top 10 later getting dunked on.
zippy5
Anybody? Bueller? Nice half. They have no answer for Big Dog. 11 point lead at the half, and dare I say we played a great half of defense!
phil
Great first half of basketball. Really playing well as a team. Large number of assist and great job of feeding the dog and finding the open outside shooters.

ZachTheZip
This one's all but wrapped up. Everyone in the MAC with the exception of Miami is now at least somewhat dangerous.

tolbob
Ball State shot 48% 3-pointers (higher than their MAC leading season average of 40%).
skip-zip
Amazing that you can hold a team to 60 points when they hit 13 3-pointers. Keith commented about our high (18) turnovers that we created today, and that we are possibly starting to resemble the "Old Akron". I'd love to see this team mold themselves into that kind of team. I didn't like the trend of giving up so many points. That was a really solid road win.
zipsrule
Nice road win. Gave up a lot of 3s, but played pretty well. Let's beat Ohio!

I like the improvement we've seen lately on the defensive end of the floor. I can live with giving up a few threes. What I couldn't take was opposing guards slashing freely to the paint. Zipsrule said it pretty well in that we're beginning to look a bit like the old Akron. Other thoughts, Kwan doesn't have to drop 15 to be valuable. He's making better decisions and made a couple of great passes into the paint. Big Dog is going to get paid . It will probably be in Europe but if he continues to improve he's going to be rewarded down the line. I like where we are right now. We can get scoring from all five spots. We are getting tougher to defend. Edited January 31, 2016 by The Hip Zip
Blue & Gold
ABJ game story. http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/university-of-akron-men-s-basketball-complete-offensive-game-delivers-zips-73-64-road-win-over-ball-state-1.658541 "The primary advantage the Zips enjoyed and capitalized on was the presence of Isaiah “Big Dog” Johnson, whose meager total of 13 points belied the fact he generally scored at will in the paint. Johnson hit 5-of-7 shots and displayed athleticism Ball State (13-8, 4-4) couldn’t completely contain." The way Big Dog's playing now is what I was crossing my fingers for when we signed him. mes102
According to Joe Lunardi, we are the automatic bid from the MAC in bracketology now after beating Ball State. https://mobile.twitter.com/ESPNLunardi/status/693452004446703616 Edited January 31, 2016 by mes102
skip-zip
The bracketology is really cool for entertainment purposes. But, that MAC representative will change every week, based on who has the best record. I'll be surprised the day that any of these national prognosticators take a really in-depth look at what is happening in the MAC.
