Zips -v- BUGS 2017

I heard the post game where KD indicated that we have got to get better on Defense.  However, this is the second home game in a row where our offense looked really good.  We are firing on all cylinders when we have Big Dog scoring inside and making some great passes with 8 assist, Jimond scoring 23 with almost all of his points coming on layups, Josh made some clutch 3 pointers in the 4th quarter, and there is no question that Kwan is playing his best basketball right now as a senior.  My only problem is when they went with a small lineup with Kwan at center.  I think with had 3 guards, Aron Jackson at forward and Kwan at center.  It did not work and we lost our 10 point lead.  KD indicated that Hughs had a bad back.  I still would have Poke playing center because Kwan is just not strong enough for the center position.

I thought BG played really well and shot the ball well.  I did not think our defense was that bad but that they shot the ball well.  There was a new ref I never saw before I he call 3 fouls on Big Dog that were all questionable.  Looking forward to Fridays game, go zips!

Interesting half time contest with kids on bouncy balls racing.  At the start of the race, the Zip announcer noticed one of the contestants had a hat on from another University so he ripped it off with a comment "What's this another school's hat and a school that got 0 points at that"!  Or words to that effect.  At the end of the race he still had the hat in his pocket, but I assume he eventually gave it back.

I actually didn't think the Zips played that bad of defense when they were able to get set defensively. BGSU settled for and connected on a lot of 10-15 foot midrange jumpers. Some highly questionable fouls in the 1st half on Big Dog and Kwan impacted how aggressive either could play defensively, especially since Hughes was pretty much out. Certainly there is still room for improvement.

I'm going to guess, or at least hope, that the slow start had something to do with the 12 or so days they had off. We turned the ball over 16-17 times and 5 out of our 1st 7 possessions were turnovers.

I thought the same. I'm loving the Zips scoring from the baseline on some nice passing. That has been open for two decades. Diggin Ivy's game. Big fan of TDM's motor, his alley-oop shows me he has the potential to entertain. I want more Poke, less Reghi. If Kwan put it in the work on the off-season that was described, it shows. He looks comfortable and effective out there. Show me more offense Zips, I'm loving it!

I'll believe it when I see it.

You only show up for K.e.nt. & Ohio.

I'm actually shocked you even knew the Zips had a game tonight.

I showed, Zips D did not.

Sadly, my cousins, Fred Falls, Sam Stow, and Richie Richfield were all too busy to attend...something about long wait times at a local ER..

The feed via ESPN3 last night was excellent. It looked like a professional production, and I enjoyed it thoroughly here in MD. This may be a helpful tool in national recruiting due to potential exposure to recruits' friends and family.

Our AD impressed me at halftime. He has a vision for investment, and he mentioned the ESPN3 feed as a good means of exposure for other lesser known and celebrated programs of UA Athletics. I found that to be encouraging and refreshing.

I also heard he talked about JAR renovations. For those of us at the game therefore couldn't watch the feed could you provide some bullet points?

Very little to report. The "interview" was very quick. Looking into renovations. George Van Horne is in charge of it. Everybody (fans, coach, players) deserve upgrade. Contact George if you want to help. I'll giving you the email address, interviewer forgot ghvanhorne@uakron.edu.

Dear George -

I want to have a beer while I watch Zips basketball. Please make it happen. My hollowed-out flip flops don't hold enough bourbon to endure the likes of Adrian and Coppin State.

My biggest observation from the game is that when Big Dog is not on the floor we are a very average at best basketball team. Dambrot had to risk putting him back into the game midway through the 1st half with 2 fouls because Poke and Hughes are not viable options. We are in big trouble next year if we have to rely on those 2 inside.

Ivey is looking great. He looks so much more comfortable on the floor than he did last year. I love the way he moves without the ball cutting to the basket. The guy also has some seriously quick springs.

We still can't stop dribble penetration on D. Broken record on that one.

+1000

Even if they limited beer sales to just the upstairs kiosks to control distribution while limiting any additional overhead, they could easily net $1,000-$2,000 more per game in profit. Not to mention it might lead to more hot dogs and other things sold as more people would visit the concession stands.

I agree we're going to have to make some serious adjustments on the offensive end after Big Dog graduates; no more playing inside-out with unathletic guards just hoisting up 3-pointers after Big Dog draws the double-team.

But I think Hughes will be a good one.  He didn't play much last might due to his back hurting him.  Hope that doesn't become a thing.

There's only really one thing that sticks out at me from last night.  Giving up 84 points at home.  If a night like that repeats itself against some of the better teams in the league, we might end up losing a home game or two.

I really though that we had turned the corner defensively over the last few games.  Although, I'm sure much of this was affected by the fact that BG's Center didn't get his first foul until 2 minutes were left IN THE GAME !!  Meanwhile, Kwan and Dog had 7 between them.  Really sketchy officiating.

I agree. We might not be able to play through Hughes, at least not at this stage in his career, but I don't view him as a liability when he is out on the court. He's certainly better than Poke.

What a great night for Keith! To become the winningest coach in program history and do at your hometown school and Alma mater!  I know he is very proud. However I would bet that he is just as proud that virtually every single player that stayed with the program has a degree. Both members of this years senior class(Dog,Kwan) have already graduated and are working towards their Masters degree. After all, thats why we have collegiate athletics, right?
