Even if some of the above named opponents wouldn't get Joe Akron excited (sorry to impugn you Joe :-)) they would definitely help in the eyes of the committee. Although after reading how the mid-majors get screwed over regardless I think you'd have to have a schedule like that and still win 80% of them to even be considered. No impunity implied, none taken..

Kind of shows the uphill battle facing the Zips and other mid-majors. It as least confirms just how badly the Selection Committee likes to downgrade teams like this. They were a 12 playing a 5, and Vegas still had them as a 1.5 point favorite. If they had not made it, they would have been the first school with 28 or more wins to ever be left out of the tournament. Makes me sick. bUAkronG
For the record I believe the series we had with MTSU was a result of the Bracket Buster games. Same with VCU IIRC. Just because it's not called a bracket buster doesn't we shouldn't be scheduling at least one high mid-major school a year.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can confirm our deny my statement. *edit* so it appears that MTSU was not a part of the bracket busters matchups. VCU was, though, twice. kreed5120
D'Antonio appears to have Marshall trending in the right direction so that is 1 team that can improve our OOC schedule moving forward. I'd like to see 2 more quality home and homes even if that means we have to sacrifice a home game per year to achieve it. Perhaps we can use that money we save buying fewer games to pay more for teams like Georgia Southern to help compliment the home slate. There is value in our type of scheduling if you are a Miami or Bowling Green and just need wins like we did in the early 2000s to build support for the program. We've moved past that and need to focus on scheduling more teams that better prepare us for March.

THEN you have the chance to be in the mix for an at-large bid. MTSU advancing in the past 2 tourneys puts them in the mix for an at-large in the future. Much like Wichita State has earned that right. And VCU. The OVC isn't any better than the MAC. Their coach (Kermit Davis) is a lot like Dambrot. 57 years old. Loyal guy...14 years with the same team. . But somehow, late in his tenure, he's figured out how to up the level of MTSU's play to a "high mid-major" level. I wish we could do the same. Our opponents in order were Drake, Niagara, Nevada, Duquesne, VCU, Youngstown St, VCU again, Creighton, Oral Roberts and North Dakota State. The really cool thing about it was even if you played an away game you were guaranteed a home game with them in the next two seasons. Brought some really good opponents to the JAR who were occasionally ranked. The series with MTSU was a four year home and away from 11-12 to 14-15. Zips lost three of the four but it was a terrific series. Edited March 17, 2017 by MDZip
1981 grad
Middle Tennessee was a great series and we should do everything to bring them back. They also brought some fans with them.

And I recall having a final possession to beat them but didn't score. That could have been the big boost that got us over the hump 10 years ago. We're still looking for that big win today. Aren't we missing Austin Peay? I'm almost certain that was a bracket buster game.

I missed them because we played Duquesne on Feb 26, 07. I missed AP because I saw Duquesne on the schedule in February and assumed they were the Bracketbusters opponent. Did we somehow play two Bracketbusters games that year? Now I'm confused. Edited March 17, 2017 by MDZip
