Blue & Gold
The Score (iPhone sports app) just reported "Report: Akron close to hiring John Groce as head coach." The Beacon Journal just reported: ""

zippy5
It's okay he posted that he wants to do the behind the scenes story on Sage Steele. Too bad there's no investigative work in Akron sports or anything to look into

skip-zip
I'm always entertained by the OU fans with the "Crakron" references. Edited April 4, 2017 by skip-zip

If you go back a few pages on that blog, you can read some really horrible stuff about Akron and how no coach's wife (Mrs. Groce for one) would ever agree to allow her husband to take a job here because this is a dead, failing, awful hell mouth of a city. UAZip0510
Groce interviewed Sunday, Akron started preparing an offer Monday. Williams never seriously considered any of Dambrot's staff. Jamion Christian was the only other major candidate.
clarkwgriswold
Well, I can't say I am overly enthusiastic about the hire, but they certainly could have done worse. I'm not a fan of his sideline antics or his regular season record. That being said, I'm generally much more tolerant of coaches acting like children when they're the coach of my team, and he did a good job of getting his teams ready for the post-season. I am looking forward to a change. As I've said before, I think we'll reflect fondly on the KD years after the sting wears off, but change is good and I'll be there next season in my Zips gear rooting on the team.

The writer bases his belief that Groce is a "major upgrade" solely on the fact that Illinois advance further than Akron in the NIT ?

Still not crazy about his demeanor/antics, but I do think he is a good hire for the program as far as recruiting and potential postseason success is concerned. ZachTheZip
Don't worry. It won't happen. Nothing will happen for Akron basketball while Groce is the head coach. Mediocrity, here we come. The guy got insanely lucky to catch lightning in a bottle at OU one year. We're banking the future of the program (and more) on the hope that it happens again, and happens consistently. I'd say that's hardly "lightning in a bottle" if he had NCAAT success in his 2 appearances, not to mention the recruiting success he was about to have before leaving for Illinois. skip-zip
Man. Ok, I don't like the guy. I guess I'll have to learn to like him. But.....Can we all please quit with all of these things that he's going to do? Suddenly we're upsetting a top seed and going to the Sweet 16 in the next couple of years. On the flip side, I don't think he's going to completely suck, as some people are suggesting either. But I will say that he has something to prove to me with barely a .500 conference record his last stint in the MAC.
