So, I am looking at the scenarios.

I wonder how you and I both would think about wanting to play at Kent next Monday if losing to Kent at home this Friday is what would be needed to make that happen?

I had the same thought but since we play Friday we have no way of knowing what to do.  If we played Saturday night I would dump the game in a flash to play at Kent.  I know that you do not believe that we have a snowballs chance of going anywhere but this team is playing as a team, playing good defense and the coach finally likes the product on the floor.  Maybe we can have a team overachieve in the MAC Tourney.

Finally, I know we have similar beliefs about Klac's abilities, but he played good basketball the last 5 minutes.  I really want him to do well but he drives me crazy when he hesitates under the basket and just will not take the ball straight up.  If he takes the ball straight up he gets that call that upset Groce.  He who hesitates is lost.

In 2010, Groce and Ohio started their championship run on the road at Ball State albeit it was a #8 and a #9 match up.

On the bus ride home the guys are not going to be thinking about the loss. They are going to be thinking about how coach went off on that ass hat ref!

I didn't watch the game but looked at the replay to see what the fuss was about.  I am so happy that Groce did that.  I can't speak for the players, but I can say as a fan that we needed him to stand up to these clowns especially Buddy Mayborg.  Frankly, I hope he keeps it up next year and invigorates the fans, so we can create a truly hostile environment at the JAR.

As I said in another thread, I saw Ball State and BG get f'ed over by bad calls at the end of their games Saturday.  The coaches need to stand up to these guys.

He also he his first class in by that point (Cooper and company).

Oh, I know.  I don't expect that at all this year.  Like the rest of us I don't expect too much these next two games but really, really hope he can get us to Cleveland.  Awesome to see Cotton back tonight.

Well, the fine Beacon Journal's headline characterized the game as a rout.  Of course, they didn't send anyone so it was a wire report, but they control the headline.  Maybe GT hasn't mastered the stream.

Also, the kid that made the halftime shot won 12 medium pizzas.

The Beacon Journal's headline for the K.ent game reads: "College Basketball / Kent State 80, Miami 83 (OT): Golden Flashes beat RedHawks, keep hopes alive for bye in MAC tournament."

Can't the Beacon Journal at least pretend they care?

But I'm going to bet they have some more great all-things-Cleveland coverage today. :puke:

Yep, while the Cleveland news outlets beat them to the Akron news.

I wasn't able to listen to the post game.  Did Groce elaborate on why he went off on Mayborg.   I'm thinking the "2" was for two games he f'd up.

As for GT, his coverage of the Zips is always downright condescending.   However, that is the attitude of most ABJ reporters who take pleasure in misery or bad luck of others.

He just indicated he'd had enough and that the kids deserved better than the officiating gave them.  He specifically referenced the Duvivier call resulting in him fouling out.

There's a great picture of Keith yelling at Mayborg during a timeout in the MAC Semifinal game in 2015, while Mayborg is walking away from him.  I wish I could find it.  It's another indication of the history with this guy.  He has been a problem for us for a long time.

Let me preface this by saying that I have always participated in badgering MAC refs during games.  I've even gone as far as standing over the railing and yelling at them until I strained my vocal cords as they exited though the NW arena doors at the JAR.   And I'm way too old to be doing that crap.  But I'm afraid to say that "standing up to them" by the COACHES is going to produce exactly what it did last night.  Technical FT's, ejections, and (hopefully not) possibly losing a game at some point.

Most people don't know this, but the officials even work with each other to make sure that one of them can avoid a bench that is giving them problems during a game.  They have the authority to do a lot of things, at their discretion.

So, what can be done?

The only thing that's of any use, and contains no negatives, is to utilize your sports administration to make a case to the league.  I know it happens.  I just don't know how long it would take to really make a strong case that someone is railroading your particular team.  Obviously a very long time, because the guy is still around.

As I said last night, Groce's reaction is nothing new.  And based on the records we can all see, he's never been in this situation with any team as a head coach.  Which certainly adds frustration that you can't hold on to any longer.   I just can't believe he walked all the way across the court during a game.  I'm not sure I've ever seen that one.  I hope he doesn't get fined.

But as for my opinion on the fouls:

I think the Duvivier foul was probably right, if they blew the whistle specifically calling the bump up around the foul line.  But there was no foul on the actual shot.

But, the no-call on the Kostelac shot was definitely a foul, from what I can see.

I hope he doesn't get reprimanded for this too.  But, if that's what he actually said on the radio, it's clearly in violation of the rule about criticizing officials.

I think this was Coach Groce's first (and inevitably, his 2nd) T of the year. If I am mistaken, please let me know.

I thought he showed remarkable restraint all year by not getting a few T's earlier this season.

He's not the 1st MAC coach to be ejected and he won't be the last.

Perspective: There were 32.5 seconds left in the game and Zips were down 9.

He's a big boy, if he gets fined and/or reprimanded, he'll take care of it and move on.

I'm very happy he stuck up for his players.

Good points.  I'm aware they can get fined and reprimanded.  I also know we know the school made a case against buddy after the BG game.   I'm trying not to sound like a whining fan from a team that's having a losing season.  Just over the last week of watching different MAC games and teams I'm more attuned to it.   As for standing up to them,  Groce timed it well in this game.   And I think as coach he can get our fans fired up. We need some of that.

I know I never have, and I've been watching NCAA basketball here and elsewhere for a LONG time!

Well, I just got a chance to look at this morning's physical paper, and the headline for this game is very bizarre.

"Flashes Crush Redhawks"

Was the writer even aware that this was an OVERTIME game when he wrote headline?  Either poor journalism (no surprise) or extreme favoritism for Kent (no surprise either).

But I will give him credit for one thing.  At least the ABJ Kent writer actually shows some enthusiasm for the school he covers.

The Headline for the Zips/Canada game read "Buffalo routs Zips for No. 1 seed in MAC".  That rag has gotten so bad NEO parakeets are refusing to crap on it.

We have wild parakeets in Ohio?  I haven't seen those since I made a recent trip to Miami.

I hear you.  Calling our game a "rout" indicates that someone only looked at the score.  But, calling an OVERTIME game a rout too?

Again, I don't know if this was just bad reporting, or indicates that Kent is viewed in a more positive light by the ABJ.  I'd guess it's both.  We all know that the liberal news media has always adored places like Kent State.

But I will also stand by my comment that Kent's reporter probably cares more about the team he is covering.
