Correct. X wore #20 last year, a bunch of guys have worn #12, Ali is wearing #24. None of those numbers seem to be retired.

There are only 36 numbers that players in college can wear.  So actually retiring the numbers instead of just honoring them could end up causing problems for some programs.

Yep, the refs association doesn't want anything higher than a 5 on any jersey, but the NBA has allowed it (Mikan, Rodman...).

That is true, but I don't think we're going to have 15+ numbers retired anytime soon

Other than claiming that a team can only use (and hence retire) 36 different jersey numbers instead of the correct number he was perfect.
