Portal Offers

I agree. I doubt we see that kind of heavy activity again, but I’m sure we’ll see some more signings and defections.

What is most surprising to me is the lack of productive Zips players that have hit the portal. Nearly every team has lost at least one key player.

So far, our biggest losses have probably been Max Tucker and Lester Miller who aren’t portal related. I thought both guys were underrated high school recruits and it seems Boston College agreed on Tucker. Remains to be seen with Miller.

Agreed.  I hope the luster of the JoMo hire has not worn off by our season and poor attendance.

For whatever reason, the site is no longer letting me post tweets.

WR Dakota Thomas committed to the Zips. He’s from Western Kentucky and has 3 years of eligibility remaining.

Trying to get excited about this commit, but him recording zero stats in 2022 for a G5 (granted high powered passing G5 with good WRs) leaves me with questions I can’t find answers to. Seems like he did show a little something as a redshirt freshman though and had some pretty nice offers in HS.

Also when I see a player doing pretty well at WKU who used to play for the Zips (Michael Mathison), and him not doing anything just feels kind of meh.

I hear you there. I think this offer is more of an upside situation, similar to Adams and George. However, Adams and George were explosive in their HS film. While I like what Thomas can potentially offer, I can’t put him in the same category. He won’t be as polished of a route runner as Shocky, but could provide more of a catch radius. The best part about it is we’ll have several talented receivers competing for that spot. I still wouldn’t be surprised to see another WR or two transfer out by the end of spring ball and another veteran brought in. I don’t know if we’ll hit the jackpot and land a productive P5 player like Shocky, but WR probably has the most options out of any position in the portal.

FYI - The twitter embedding issue is being looked into.

"You don't have permission to access this resource." is the message I got when I posted Dakota's #Zipemup tweet.

The list of known offers is quickly shrinking. This portal window closes in one week.

Please refer to my post and link in this Topic on 12/30/22 that defines the rules of the TP.  The initial window to declare for the TP closes in nearly a week, but teams can sign players at any time per the article.  There is another window for players to declare later on.  Let's continue to sign good players.

Go Zips!!!

I tallied all the movement out with the closure of the first portal window. The numbers below consist of graduation and transfer portal. The number in parentheses is the transfer portal. For comparison, last year’s movement was around 50 players including graduation.

QB = 0

RB = 1 (1)

WR = 4 (2)

TE = 1

OL = 5 (4)

DL = 9 (4)

LB = 2 (1)

DB = 8 (4)

ST = 3 (1)

Total = 33

TP = 17

Thanks Catdaddy. Your analysis is interesting. To me it points out that we are not losing talent that can help us grow. Further we are not losing depth. The folks we have coming in are better in both the ability to challenge for a starting position and the ability or to provide much needed depth. Joe understands the process and will make this team better before we tie it up in the Fall.  Give him time.

Rivals lists their picks on best players left in portal:

QB - Not a need.

RB - Not a need.

WR - What fanbase wouldn’t want Caleb Ducking? Not only is he a productive receiver, but he does the duck waddle when he scores.

OL - Even though we would lean towards taking an immediate starter, I’d like for us to land Matt Fries. I covered his recruitment out of HS and I’m surprised he has not been scooped up yet.

DT - Not a need.

I agree, Fries would definitely be a nice addition.

If we could land Matt, I also highly recommend going after any OL named Burger.

I can almost hear the announcer as a  Zip runs a sweep behind the pulling Burger with Fries.

DE - Jesus Gibbs (who we’ve already offered) is listed as the top prospect. Slim pickings from there.

LB - Not a position of need, but if it were Kobe Wilson from Temple would be a solid addition.

Offer out to DE Richie Hagarty. Former Miami (OH) commit. He then transferred to SIU and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Offer out to CB Courtney Eubanks of North Dakota State. He also has two years of eligibility remaining.

Offer out to OT Shemar Hobdy-Lee of FIU. And to no one’s surprise, Houston was also quick to offer.

I believe Coach Rodriguez would have coached him at FIU. Hopefully we have the inside track there, though I think IOL is a bigger need than tackle at this point.
