GP1
How tedious has college football gotten? The Steelers game started 30 minutes after the Clemson game. When the Steelers game ended there was 1:47 left in the Clemson game.
GP1
Next week, an idiot with a microphone will try to convince you that the only way to improve what is a horrible first round of the CFP is to expand it to 16 teams. Remind the idiot that this OSU game is exactly what would have happened anyhow. We aren't watching the next evolution of college football, we are watching the collapse. kreed5120
A four team playoff realistically was the correct size as most years there are only at most 3 or 4 elite teams. The problem is you had people crying thinking their team was unfairly left out and stood a chance had they made the field. Even with a 12 team field you still had Bama fans crying they were robbed. There will never be a way of pleasing everyone. Edit: Under the current format where Arizona State and Boise State were gifted the 3 and 4 seed over far better teams, the quarterfinal match-up between OSU and Oregon might ultimately be what decides who the national champion will be. Pleasing everyone isn't the point of the twelve team playoff. The point is to please television executives who want to sell more advertising time geared towards drunks and degenerate gamblers. They are the ones running college football. Anyone who sat around yesterday watching all twelve quarters of that garbage could only fall into one of those two categories. It was utter trash. 1

GP1
A good article about why the CFP is and has been so bad. It's really about college football in general. There are loads of blowouts every weekend. https://slate.com/culture/2024/12/college-football-playoff-blowouts-reactions-paul-finebaum-lane-kiffin.html

You should seek out some counseling instead of making rants on a sports fan message board Explain what is wrong with this take instead of resorting to an ad hominem. My life is perfectly fine, thanks for asking. Like how can you live for several decades watching College Athletics, and think the system is "fair" or make statements like "this is screwing over the fans"? Like seriously, of course it is. The fans aren't what make money in MAC sports, the filling TV time slots does. I knew this over a decade ago when I was a student at UA, how can't you? And aren't we, as adult fans of UA athletics, supposed to have these more uncomfortable conversations? Like how can we stand as the case study of the culture of resume building, and not discuss it? Where is your intellectual curiosity? Very disappointing response from a UAkron alum. Edited December 25, 2024 by ZipCat
Captain Kangaroo
First year I haven’t heard anyone whining that there’s too many bowl games? Probably because the lower tier bowl’s entertainment value has blown away the national playoff games thus far. Also nice to have a plan B when the NFL pits the Seahawks vs. the Bears. 🥱

kreed5120
Personally, I quit caring for the random bowls. Back 10 years ago maybe 1 player would sit out a bowl game to prepare for the draft. Now star players skipping the games is far more common. To me it makes the games feel more like an exhibition than a meaningful game.

I see players competing hard and fans having a fun time around the holidays. There is not only nothing wrong with that, but it is awesome and something our society needs more of. The games mean something to the players students alumni fans and general community around their schools. GP1
Tech and Vandy was another great game. The Navy game was awesome in front of a packed stadium. Bowls mean something to a lot of people. I can't believe college football is committing suicide so television executives whe don't have the NFL will have something to show on their network.
GP1
USC vs A & M = Awesome More bowls please. I'd say less playoffs, but I can't imagine being less interested. Maybe in some strange way getting those 12 teams out of the bowl picture has made the bowls better. Seriously, other than people who profit off of college football, who exactly was clamouring for an expanded playoff?
Blue & Gold
When the inevitable break comes between the P4 & G5, do you think the G5 will just be combined with the FCS?
GP1
1 hour ago, Blue & Gold said: When the inevitable break comes between the P4 & G5, do you think the G5 will just be combined with the FCS? Hard to say. It depends on what P4 requires. Remember, we're talking about professional football now. There are some schools that simply cannot compete in football at highest level. In reality, there are more P4 schools than NFL teams and far fewer capable of winning the championship. They are all either in the Big Ten or SEC. There could be a professional league of affiliated universities as small as 30 teams. 20 teams would probably be enough and that's probably ten too many. There could be a situation where teams like Cal, Stanford, Northern, Duke ,Wake Forest, etc wouldn't mind playing in a lower division if they could maintain their conference affiliation for other sports at the highest level. Not every FCS team would want to compete against even MAC level schools, but some could compete very well. What I'm certain of is nobody really knows what to future holds. Does anyone know a television executive what is going to happen? They are the ones controlling things.

If a break happens, I think it will be the SEC and Big 10 forming a ~40 team league. There are only a handful of programs left outside those two conferences that they would want.
catdaddyp
When a break does come, they’ll have to make a decision if education still matters. Few are talking about it but graduation rates amongst football players is decreasing. Course credits are getting lost/not accepted amongst multiple transfers. 2

LZIp
The not for profit aspect has been lost with these P4 programs from an athletic standpoint. It’s all about $. Should start being taxed and I suspect this would have a big impact on program donations. Then again, the IRS ruling that these collectives are not charitable institutions hasn’t seemed to have much of an impact on funding.
