A lot of the opponents against the expanded playoff were worried about it devaluing the regular season. Conference champs getting preferred seeds/byes helps with that. NFL works the same way. Look no further than the 14-3 Vikings going to the Rams this week. Yes, I think this year was also an anomaly. Both the Big 12 and ACC were weak. I'd expect most years at least 1 of the 2 conferences would produce a real contender.

The power of the Big 12 are in the SEC now. It might be a long time before either Clemson or FSU are meaningful contenders again. Rapidly, the SEC and Big Ten took over college football and that disparity is going to get worse, not better. There will be large disparities developed within each league as well. For example, consider Wisconsin dead. College football is just minor league professional football at this point. I watched more Sopranos reruns last night than the OSU game because I'm not a fan of minor league sports. The SEC and Big Ten are completely set up to outpace the other conferences. College football is dead as we once knew it and it isn't going back.

If we get literally any sort of regulation(salary cap, actual penalty for tampering, etc) the gap should narrow. @Hilltoppershared a pretty good article about what may be coming with that a few days ago..though the SEC and B1G will do everything they can to prevent it. The SEC and B1G are ruining college sports and I can’t stand it. Edited Saturday at 05:13 PM by LZIp

The SEC and Big Ten should exit the NCAA and start their own football league. It's the most profitable thing to do now that it's professional football. TV networks would pay a fortune for the broadcast rights.

College football is dead as we once knew it and it isn't going back. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. The Big 10 and SEC collectively will far supercede the Big 12 and ACC. That said there are still ~25 teams between the 2 conferences. I don't think it's unreasonable that 1 of those 25 teams to emerge as a top 7 or 8 team most years. FSU was supposed to be that team before they fell flat on their faces. As for schools like Wisconsin they come and go. Only the blue bloods are consistently great. Even then they can have down periods, like Michigan did for a number of years. Wisconsin took a step back and Washington who was irrelevant for a number of years made the national championship. Washington took a step back this year and then Indiana emerged. There will always be programs that come out of nowhere and have a period of excellence before returning to their median. We're probably not Catholic enough for the A10 but if it gave us a little extra bump in recruiting we'd probably have as much chance of getting to the big dance regularly as winning the MAC. Duquesne won it last year and Dayton got an at-large.
